Amazon Web Services: Create A WordPress Website Using An AWS EC2 Instance (Video #1)

Are you tired of your Web Hosting Service. Ever wondered how easy it would be to create a WordPress website on Amazon Web Services (AWS) and an EC2 Instance?
Rest assured installing WordPress in AWS is very easy, and can be done in as little as 10 minutes by creating an Amazon EC2 instance with a pre-installed WordPress image.
This is the first of 2 videos where I'll show you how to install WordPress in AWS using an EC2 instance, and how to access and configure that blog.
Once you have WordPress installed on AWS, you'll want to configure WordPress instance so it can be accessed by a custom domain name. We'll cover that in the second video.

6:37 I would STRONGLY advise you to set up a key pair at creation time. If you don't, you won't be able to SSH into your server. And it's very complicated to try to add one later.

Thanks for the 3 videos. I went through them all and was successful in implementing what you taught. A humble request - Could you continue to expand on this series a bit. Like how to access the database and export it. I am used to godaddy and cpanel, phpmyadmin to export/import databases for my wordpress site. Could you show how its done in AWS expanding the current example? That would go a long way in helping the viewers grasp an END-TO-END process for a Wordpress site/blog on AWS. Thanks again.

Great help to get past Amazon web hosting wall of death. When will next videos appear? What about a video on using the AWS cost calcaltor. AWS still feels like putting head in crocidiles mouth of unknown charges/costs. Thanks David

Thanks David. I can't stand the AWS Calculator, and I've never had much luck with it. I'm planning to post an article to my site on the costs I've incurred with both CloudFront and EC2 given my traffic patterns and site use. Probably won't get around to that until April sometime.

Hi Craig, I tried exactly like you mentioned, except that i am using freenom instead of godaddy. I am having trouble setting up the DNS . I tried setting it up similar to you mentioned, but when I use DNSchecker, it is not resolving to the staticIP.

Any reason you recommend proceeding without a key pair? Would it affect if I just create one and save it if I ever need it? Great video series, Im completely illiterate when it comes to this stuff so thank you

I didn’t really need a key pair since I was only planning on accessing the site via the WordPress admin screen. If you plan on using FTP or SSH to access your site you’ll want a key pair.

Unfortunately skipping the 'key pair' step is a bad idea since you need that to ssh log in and remove the 'Bitnami banner' that is installed by default. Thanks for the clear tutorial though.

Thanks for the feedback Rodney. I didn’t include the key pair step using the assumption you would log in directly to the WordPress dashboard. But you are correct, it is a good idea to include that.

Multiple pages can exist within a WordPress site. If you’re talking about creating multiple WordPress sites, you can run those off the same EC2 Instance, similar to how a shared hosting environment is set up.

You'll want to use the key/value pair if you happen to be accessing your site via FTP. I've got some other videos that show how to do that using a Unix instance accessing the server via SSH. Might be a good topic for another video.

I am getting 503 error when putting the IP address... Does anyone know what that means. I terminated thed instance and relaunched to get the same result.

at the end do you have to get another password or its the same password as the start. When the up changes, does the password change too?

Once you have the initial password and are able to access the WordPress Dashboard, you can go through the normal WordPress process to create a new Admin account with your own password.

So if I'm a web designer, would this be ideal to host my clients website? Just create an instance for each client?

That's possible, but depends on a few factors. If you're client(s) are expecting a lot of traffic, and based upon the content being hosted, the costs could add up significantly. May be cheaper to go with a Share Host or even a dedicated hosting account. Yea it could be done, but I don't think it's a simple as saying I'll put you on an AWS hosting account. Lot's of variables need to be considered.

@@Craigerson Hello Craig, If I wanted to add more than one wordpress site, let´s say 15 more sites, I chose a more powerful server in order to be able to have more space and CPU power. Is it possible to add more sites to that single server? Is there any other way to do this besides the AWS ready Wordpress instance? I have locally in the office one server running a Software called ISPConfig, which is the one I use to host/manage sites locally in the office and to the world. How would you go about taking all my ISPConfig/Wordpress sites into AWS? Thank you in advance.

Not sure I completely understand your question Salvador. You pay for the EC2 Instance, which is really the horsepower of the virtual server along with whatever space you are using, and how long you are running that instance. I can't seem to log in to my site anymore through the /wp-admin or /wp-login. I am told I have the wrong password and when I try to reset it, my email is not recognized. The Bitnami forums do not provide a clear solution to my problem and even some of the solutions I tried had issues. Has this happened to you? Or anyone in the comment section?

Yes it happened to me once before I created a new admin account. Unfortunately the only solution is to reinstall the Bitnami image and start from scratch. Haven’t had any issues once I’ve created my own account.

I proceeded without a key pair, now when I try to connect, I get this error message: Instance is not associated with a key pair This instance is not associated with a key pair. Without a key pair you will need to log into this instance using a valid username and password combination. Umm, now what?

The video explains how you get the default User ID and Password in order for you to log into WordPress. By following this you’ll have full access to the WordPress Dashboard as you would with any other WP Install. The key pair is required if you want to use FTP to access your site, which was not the intent of this video.

You say you are trying to connect, not sure what you mean by that. The intent of this video was to create an AWS EC2 instance running WordPress, so there's no need to "connect" to it. I'm assuming you are trying to FTP into the server? If that's the case, I've got some other video's that touch on using the key/value pair to access things.
