@@James-nr2hi you think he did that on one go, no, he took his time and made sure the situation was right for that, trust me, these warrior's were no joke
@@LoneWolf20213 I'm pretty sure just blindly charging in is just kind of what Achilles does. He does it a lot. I wasn't arguing that they weren't great warriors but... There's nothing to suggest that Achilles was scared. I have no doubt that they were the greatest opponents he ever faced, that they gave him a challenge and that he found them impressive but he probably wasn't scared.
@@LoneWolf20213 That's not how it works. Yeah demigods are stronger faster and more durable than normal humans. Luckily Achilles was one of the strongest Greek demigods of all time. But also being a demigod doesn't give them any better of a chance against him. The styx enchantment makes him nearly invincible. Anyone could get lucky and hit him in the heel. But it's un likely that a trained warrior would even aim there.
I put him on when trying to fall back to sleep after waking at 2am. I put on a playlist and bam, I’m out like a light. Then I listen at a decent hour when I can appreciate his stories. I am not planning on listening while operating heavy equipment though.
Back when Wonder Woman got her first big reboot in the 80's (post Crisis on Infinite Earths, I believe), the amazons of Themyscira were born from the souls of women who died at the hands of men. This was done so that the remaining few Greek gods could retain some power by being worshiped by a select few. Not sure for how many years this remained the case until another reboot of them in the New 52 made them closer to actual amazons in the sense that they'd reproduce by sleeping with men...and then killing them afterward. They'd also trade away the male infants to Hephaestus in exchange for armor and weapons. Those men born from amazons worked in the god's foundries, as well. Brian Azzarello's run on New 52 Wonder Woman is like a parody of ancient Greek tales, for better or worse.
An other version is that they are Immortal so there is no reason for daughters. Meaning that they forever young and only died if killed by violence or sucide.
@@sophiawilson8696 There is the comic series, " The Odyssey of the Amazons." Which gave their origin of childless women how stop age in the mid 40's when natural birthing comes to an end. After they are done watching the relatives die from old age enough times, they leave their home villages and start looking for tells of other timeless women. It is applied that they can only have children with other " supernatural " beings. Such as frost size ogre/ giant.
The video is amazing as always, however you didm't mention that Penthesilea was cursed by a goddess to be desired by every man who laid eyes upon her. For that she started to wear armor and helmet at all times. When Achilles defeated her, the cursed was not lifted and when the hero took the helmet away, he fell victim of the curse. He then proceeded to engage in an act of Necrophilia.
That’s actually a really terrifying curse. Especially for a woman. It effectively translates to “every man on earth will now instantly try to rape you”. Men would probably end up killing each other to eliminate competition. What absolute chaos that would cause. Would be really interesting if used as a strategy though. She could break the ranks of an entire army just by taking off the helmet. This should be a movie.
me learning about the Amazons dealing with Dinoysuss: "I hope this leads to a full blown orgy." Mythology & Fiction Explained: "this lead to a full blown war." Me: Damn
I had a theory that the Amazons may have been an artistic interpretation of what Sparta would have become if the Spartan men were killed off. There are three reasons why Spartan women fit the description of the Amazons quite well. First, though they never formally served in the Spartan Army, (as far as we know) Spartan women were trained to fight. The reason for this was that if the Spartan Army were ever destroyed, they would serve as the last line of defense. Second, in addition to learning how to fight, they often engaged in many forms of athletics such as gymnastics as part of their education. This made them physically fit which in turn made them by ancient standards (and possibly even modern standards) drop dead gorgeous. Sparta has actually been refereed to as "The Land of Beautiful Women." Third, like the rest of Spartan society, they were conditioned from infancy to believe that all non-Spartans were little better than animals. For this reason, if the Spartan men were killed off, Sparta would have become a nation ruled by beautiful warrior women who sincerely believed that the only men in the world who were worth anything were all dead.
Good reason!!! There is a theory that long ago a person or group meet up a village or tribe with no men they ask what happened to your men? They replied all dead because of war. The tale travel around anicent Greece and turn into a tribe of Amazons.
The history of Amazons starts a long time before the birth of Sparta. Actually Omerus cited the Amazon warriors in his poem, so the concept of a matriarchal society led by a strong warrior woman was in existence already.
I’ll debunk your theory in 2 words: Dahomey warriors (google it and thanks me later) Europeans have been stealing pages out of the African history books for centuries, this is no exception.
As a teenage girl, I was obsessed with the Amazon's and the Ashanti warrior women. They were everything I wanted to be when I grew up. Now I'm a 30 year old aspiring Stepford wife. Evolution, I tell you.

Wait, so there was one or more stories about the Amazons charging into war with giant snakes? ... All of a sudden, the name of the Amazon inspired tribe in One Piece, the Kuja (meaning Nine Snakes,) and the fact they have snake companions for combat purposes makes so much more sense. I love it.
dude, was searching for your comment so much people talking about wonder woman, and im searching for one piece mentions haha thought the same thing about snakes, and if i remember correctly, amazons in one piece even ride horses... insane haha
@Bleilock1 Have no idea how I wasn't notified about your comment sooner. Man, and here I was, thinking I was the only one talking about the Kuja tribe. First time I've seen anyone say they were searching out some random, obscure comment of mine too. lol Anyway, it's been a while since I've seen the Kuja in action, so I can't remember the horses as well as I remember the snakes. Definitely worth revisiting the Amazon Lily arc just to find the horses then. But yeah, just when you think Oda is throwing things in for the heck of it, you find out he's drawing upon established mythology. That's just amazing. lol
Is it already the same guy or is it a trend to call oneself that? (Also, if we keep seeing him everywhere then that just means he watches all the same videoes as us, he just comments really often.)
I strongly recommend Adrienne Mayor's book The Amazons, which goes into the real life Scythian female warriors upon whom the mythological Amazons were likely based.
I thought the plot parallels in the newer "Wonder Woman" film and Greek Mythology were pretty good. Wasn't sure how it would be before I saw it. Gal Gadot did a good job also, in my opinion.
One of my favorite portrayals of the ‘Mythological’ Amazons (excluding Wonder Woman) are the “Warrior Maidens” in the classic Thundercats show!🤩🥰 I’m still mad the Cowards at CN never put them in the 2011 reboot.😤🥺 (A.K.A the ONLY significant Tcats reboot in existence!)😣
However, women has long been seen as potential and strong warriors in early times. Even in Rome, they found that one of the most decorated gladiators to have been dug up, was female. Presenting the fact that thou male and female do differ in size and muscle build, women can and will excel at the battlefield. They adapt like any other brave human being would in a dangerous situation. I have a great respect for the other part of the human species. Only a fool would have any other thought after seeing a woman giving birth to 6 kids ... But not only because of that, of course :)
Brilliant. I've read so much books and documentaries on amazon's . And still learning more. There's an African king who had squad of female warriors as he's bodyguards and crack troops. But i forget he's name. Getting old. Be safe all.😊
I've once seen a reference to a collection of female skeletons with damage to them that coincided with battle injuries, they were accredited with possibly being the actual Amazon tribe. Unfortunately, I don't recall where I had read this or I would provide a reference.
I'm wondering if anyone can clarify this. The searing off the breast thing apparently was apparently not accepted at the time. From what I heard, the name for the Amazons was not actually Greek in origin, but sounded similar to "without breasts" in their language. No depiction of the Amazons in artwork show them with only one breast, even thought their weapons and armor changed with the times. It could just be someone's explanation for the name, or it could be meant as an insult, as they would not have been considered "real women" because they acted like men in the Greek mindset.
It would be awesome if you could dig up some legends from Greenland, I think it would be beneficial for everyone to learn a little about our myths and mythology. Greetings from Greenland.
Absolutely loving your uploads! Helps me fall asleep, thanks to your soothing voice. Plus some good old lessons in story format. Would love to hear more on Indian myth.
There's a kingdom that used to exist in Africa that had warrior women, the Dahomey. Take a gander and see for yourself how those fearsome and ferocious women nearly won against French and Dutch soldiers in the 1800's.
@@snipeshot1401 you are right i think. the iliad actually covers the last years of the war. all the info about what happened before was added from other texts and bundled by modern historians for context. the iliads other name is "the anger of achilles" and starts with agamemnon and achilles picking their fight and throwing in some bits of info about who each of the characters is and what he has been doing. it is made plain that they have all been there for some time but it is easy to get it wrong. most of us have read only the modern texts.

most of my family is Greek and let me tell you, an island full of Greek women would simultaneously be the most incredible and most terrifying place on Earth
Eichiro oda(Author of One Piece) took inspiration from the Amazon warriors and created the Pirate Empress Boa Hancock and even the isolated island called as Amazon Lily in the One piece world !
Side note about the amazons. In Croatia the early tribes that formed the country had two female warriors, Tuga and Buga, and these tribes the warriors were all women. They were fierce in battle and feared. The other tribes were male. It was noted that these tribes emigrated from Central Asia, and ended up in Dalmatian lands by the Romans, to provide a buffer against the Mongol Hordes. Most mentions fall short of calling Tuga and Bugas tribes Amazonian.

So if we mix myth and DC then.... hippolyta is the daughter of ares, and granddaughter of Zeus... so she has a child with her grandfather so that Diana can kill her brother/grandfather? And Diana’s dad is also her great grandpa and her brother is also her grandpa and her mom is technically her niece? Hippolyta gave birth to her own aunt....
I've been here since the Poseidon video so almost 10 months now. I can't believe its been so long. I really do enjoy your videos. I even made a playlist of all my favorite video. I like it when you make those little random tangents in your videos. They make the videos feel real and I love it how you show all the angles. Still waiting for that Zeus video I hope your neighbors turned down the noise enough for you to do your videos in peace. Either way very fascinating stuff and I hope you stay safe.
There're *real* cultures where women warriors were not only a known thing, but *desired* ; ancient Greece had Spartan women, Sarmatians and Scythians likely had warrior women who were basically the Amazons, Viking Age Scandinavia had the Skjoldmaer (shieldmaidens), and Japan had the Onna-Musha (women warriors), and even the Onna-Bugeisha (women *samurai* ). There might even be *others* I don't know about; if anyone knows, please feel free to tell me. All that to say, the idea of the Amazons is one of the more *probable* Greek stories; Sarmatia and Scythia could *very well* have been organized in such a way that the men and women lived in separate tribes while still being part of the same country.
My assumption from all of the stories is that in those times, they didn't have a King Henry the first, second or third, and because Amazon's loved war as you said, "They were bred for it," they rampantly ran through Queens. I believe "Hippolyta" was a title given to the Queens of the Amazon's, and it was passed down for generations. I do not think that one person could have multiple stories in history. Unless the Amazonians had extreme healing powers like "Wolverine," but that's another theory for another day.
Ok one question how did the name" Amazon" come about? Does it have anything to do with the world's largest rainforest shared by three countries that's called the "Amazon" ?
I’ve always wondered about that, too. Because these amazons were first, it seems the rain forest was named afterwards, but why? What’s the cultural connection?
@@Ivy94F supposedly, the first European explorer to traverse the river encountered and fought a tribe of (partly) warrior women, for whom he named the river after the Greek myths.
I remember Supernatural’s take on the Amazons. They were warrior women who would mate with men to have a daughter, the daughter would mature in a couple of days, and then have to kill her father as a right of passage.
Should do one about Fujin from Japanese mythology, you’ve loosely touched on him when talking about his brother but that’s it and not many vid on RU-vid with him
Hey, I've enjoyed your mythology videos; and I was wondering, just for the fun of it, could you make a video about Gozer the Gozerian from Ghostbusters?
Amazons always seemed like a joke to me. A tale that Ancient Greeks made up to laugh at the audacity of women warriors. Why? Amazons always fall in love with the enemy and end up realizing that they were "wrong" to go against their "nature" and end up as trophy housewives. All these girls had to do is look at an ancient Greek hero and they would strip naked and open their legs. There are few exceptions sure, like Penthesilea the Amazon Queen who was brave enough to face Achilles during his famous rage and died. But the examples of Amazons not been able to control their emotions and constantly falling in love with the heroes are too many compared to the examples when they are adversaries till the end. It brings the message that women can not control their "urges" and risk falling in love with what is essentially the enemy and thus they shouldn't be included in the army.
@Ultra Boy1000 I don' think that they should be the exception. But the number of tales and myths where the male hero falls in love with the enemy and goes to their side are very few and on those cases the outcome isn't bright for them and it brings shame and tragedy. It is played more in the genre of seduction. However on Amazons the number of tales where they fall in love with the enemy are disproportionately high compared to the tales where they actually fight their enemies. In stark contrast to the male characters it plays more in the genre or romance. The themes and tones are vastly different on many levels. I wish the Amazons were depicted as fierce warriors but they are always used differently. In Troy for example they are used to show the cowardliness of the Trojans that they will sit behind tall walls while women fight for them. Whether we like it or not Ancient Greek Society, like most societies of its time, was Misogynistic and thus the heroic tales of women are few and far between so of course they would depict the Amazons like this. Women trapped in battle waiting for a Man to pick them and take them home.
@Ultra Boy1000 The more weapons and armor you add the smaller the biology gap gets. Contrary to popular belief Arms and Armor weren't heavy during ancient times sure a woman wouldn't face well against a man in a wrestling match but in an arms duel? The skill of the individual there will take premise rather than the gender. Assuming that both are healthy and "fit".
@@Peecamarke Most of those tales survive to this day as Children's bedtime stories. The roles men and women had in the Ancient World were defined. A man fought in wars a woman raised children back home. Thus it is natural that their stories will reflect that.
I'm halfway through writing a low fantasy pentalogy where the 'Evil bad guys' in the background if you will being based on Lovecraft and his predecessors work (along with other mythological things). Would love to get in touch and see your opinions on how to go about this because as much as I love H.P's work, I'm not quite as knowledgeable as you seem to be. Would be awesome thing to do, I'm huge fan of your videos and could really do with a second opinion 😅
I doubt there is any truth in the legends that they remove their breast for shooting with a bow. Ive done some archery as hobby and a breast would not be in the way. Just watch some archery or try it for yourself and see. Or check some green arrow on YT. You see my point that for the posture holding for shooting a breast would not be in the way
There's the anime One Piece where an all female pirates crew comes from Amazon Lily. An island filled with warrior women that use snakes as bows and imbued their arrows with a special skill called Haki that make arrows strong enough to break boulders with a single shot and it's ruled by the three Gorgon sisters. Two can turn into giant snakes and the queen Boa Hancock a beautiful woman with the ability to turn people that are enamored with her into stone.
In different version the Amazons have an agreement with a near by village with the men that they meet and in a year later males that born will go to them.
One Piece actually has an amazon island. The leader is an especially formidable combatant said to be the most beautiful woman in the world. The whole island goes in on the snake theme too.
I think recently there was a burial found of two warrior women of high esteem, a mother and daughter. I think they were in a region in Russia, i saw it last yead so i can't remember where i got the info from
