In this video I wanted to make a long relaxing and contemplative soundscape as a basis for later guitar improvisation.
There are several tips in this video that will hopefully give you ideas how to play ambient guitar: presets for Strymon TimeLine, BigSky, Roland GR-33 and some peculiarities of my guitar sound.
VG-99 patch I used in this video: “VG-99 Pitch2 Dly.g9e”. Use VG-99 Editor or VG-99 Librarian to upload it to your VG-99.

More info:
If you play an acoustic instrument with a piezo pickup Fishman Aura is definitely worth buying. It recreates the sound of an acoustic instrument as if you don’t plug it in Line, but record it in a studio with a microphone.
One thing I’d like to talk about is a pick. Most of us play with a plastic pick. I used to do it for year. The other day a good friend of mine who is one of the best Russian stone-cutters (and a great guitar player too) called me and said he cut several guitar picks from Mongolian agate and Siberian nephrite. They were amazing! Since that day 90% of the time I play guitar with picks I use them.
Gem picks are not universal. You have to make corrections in your guitar picking technique. I personally found them stunning when playing Nylon. They sound much more solid than plastic and don’t have that ringing effects when you play Steel because it is Nylon and it is soft. Try them!
Gear used:
Godin Multiac Nylon ACS-SA
Fishman Aura Spectrum DI
Roland US-20
Roland VG-99
Roland GR-33
Strymon TimeLine
Strymon BigSky
Boomerang III looper
Proel USB M8 mixer
Cubase
Thanks for watching!
P.S. and sorry for Chinese slippers again))))))

A beautiful "after the battle" movie theme! I see the dead bodies everywhere, torn flags, birds of pray in the dark sky... Really strong piece of music

This is so inspiring! I really want to try it ot out myself. guitar synth and all. It`s gonna cost, but what else is there to do theese days. Some of your material reminds me of the samples that Spectrasonic released on their sample CD bizarre guitar from the late 90s early 2000s.

Thanks Rolf! Yeah, we live in a strange time... Spectrasonics had some cool instruments like Omnisphere!

I just bought an old gr33 in good condition. Do you have favourite patches?
@MikhailMedvedev
@MikhailMedvedev 4 года назад
I guess no - I construct or modificate a patch for the surtain purpose each time I play it. Though I do have some patches that work as a base for late modification. I like to make a VERY slow attack in case of ambient swells. Grand piano is great for that, slow strings may be... And I experiment with delays there so that the volume pedal would not "shut up" gr-33 abruptly when in toe up position

Hi there, are you able to tell is about how all your gear is hooked up, or rather how the signal chain is? Thank you in advance!
@MikhailMedvedev
@MikhailMedvedev 2 года назад
Hi! There is some description below the video. You can find my signal chain in the end - usually I put it down in the order the gear is connected.

Hey.. Just amazing! Did you every played a Godin ACS SA Slim ?
@MikhailMedvedev
@MikhailMedvedev 7 лет назад
Thanks! Yes, I did. There is even one video with ACS Slim on my RU-vid channel: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2SiGG6v6XHs.html Well. I liked how that particular instrument sounded even more than the one I play now. But I changed it in a week for a "normal" ACS. The reason is that it is impossible to play some things on nylon when strings are too close to each other - this is not steel. They sit higher than steel. It means: when you press a string with a finger (left hand) a part of a finger touches a nearby string - it is located too close, comparing to classic guitar neck... unfortunatelly... this is more a marketing trick that you don't have to "get used to nylon strings because the spce between strings is the same as on a guitar with steel strings". It has a different physics...

Amazing video! I had alredy watched this. I think I alredy have watched all your video from ambient / guitar. I'm a Jazz musician and I was going to buy Godin ACS slim or acs . Now thank to you I'm sure i will buy and ACS KOA / CEDAR / ROSEWOOD top. Do you like the Godin acs sa ? I will play Jazz on this guitar. Do you know if with the 13 pin connector i can connect to the PC and use midi programs?
@MikhailMedvedev
@MikhailMedvedev 7 лет назад
you can use 13-pin to connect to any guitar-to-midi device and than use either midi cable or usb to connect to PC or whatever... but I wouldn't rely much on it - still too many tracking mistakes when recognizing notes... I heard about program midi filters that would reduce those mistakes, but still... anyway it's a great toy - guitar-to-midi)... if you want to shift boundaries and have money for that - try it... it's a good idea to buy used gear to try, this way you can always sell equip for nearly the same price... so is't for you to decide... I use a lot of 13-pin capabilities in my VG-99

Wonderful stuff. Where to buy the picks ?
@MikhailMedvedev
@MikhailMedvedev 6 лет назад
Actually there are some web-stores that sell gem picks. As for those made in Siberia I shouid contact the guy who made them, perhaps he will cut more. Also I have here in Moscow 4 agate picks that he made. He wanted me to sell them, but I'm not a good seller, you know))) So if you are interested I will send you photos and dimentions.
@TheBodhro

Yep, send me a mail. I'd rather buy from him instead of the big stores.

What camera used? And what edition video program used? You job is absolute fantastic , all best friend David Spain
@MikhailMedvedev
@MikhailMedvedev 7 лет назад
Thanks David! I use Canon 70D to shoot video - it's not the best from Canon, but that's what I have now... As for video editting. I'm a bit experienced in that so that might be difficult for somebody, but still... Now my workflow looks like that. The first step is to make Colour Correction or Grading of the video. I use DaVinci Resolve 12, it has a free version which is very good. Actually you can use it for video editing too. The second step is either Adobe Premiere Pro or Adobe After Effects if I' m going to add infographics or animated titles.That's all) In most cases Adobe Premiere is enough, but I got used to tricky video editing so I do it this way)

Many thanks Milhail , let me other question ,you have two cable from your guitar Godin, how plug to Roland VG , GR33 and direct sound to Strymon pedals and after combine all source ? Many thanks from Spain Mikhail.
@MikhailMedvedev
@MikhailMedvedev 7 лет назад
I should have described that in video) well.. two cables from Godin go this way: 1) 13-pin cable from "midi"-pickup goes to Roland US-20 splitter and then one goes to VG-99 and another to GR-33 13-pin inputs 2) 1/4 Jack goes to Fishman Aura and then to VG-99. Signals from VG and GR go to Proel USB M8 mixer and then summed signal goes to Strymon TimeLine - Strymon BigSky - Boomerang Looper so that the all could pass through effects chain and go to looper. I could skip the Proel mixer and mixed the signal right in GR - it has two audio inputs to mix audio signal internaly with a synth signal... but for some reasons I prefer this routing at home.
@MikhailMedvedev
@MikhailMedvedev 7 лет назад
so generally the main idea was to mix GR and VG (Clear guitar signal goes from VG either) sounds and send them to other effects and then to looper... sometimes I change this chain, but this is the most common for me
