The fact that the crew of the Samuel B. Roberts managed to save their ship from what was basically certain doom is so goddamn impressive. Fucking legends, every last one of them.

American damage control teams seem to have that as a theme. WWII has several instances of "ship should have sunk, but managed to limp home anyway" or that one time the Japanese though they'd sunk two aircraft carriers when in fact it was the same ship twice because the crew had managed to get her moving again after the first "fatal" blow.

There are basically two cardinal rules when it comes to dealing with the United States. 1: Don't. Touch. Our. Boats. And 2: Don't fuck with gas prices. Many countries around the globe can tell you exactly what happens when you do, and yet people *keep doing it*, because surely it'll work this time! I'm not even defending the US here, I'm just stating historical precedent. Don't give the military an excuse to test out all of their fun new toys. Or do, I'm not your parents. Edit: Hah, I forgot TFE basically states those 2 rules at the end of that video. They aren't wrong.

Important details: the Perry class, while nice, was the smallest US capital ship type at the time (discontinued in favor of larger destroyers). Despite using the same word to describe them- the Iranian frigates were half the size of a Perry class, and a Spruance class destroyer is twice the size of a Perry. What I'm trying to say is, just counting ships, the Iranians were outmassed by ONE destroyer.

On reason that damage control crews are so good in the modern Navy can be linked directly to the USS Forrestal. At that time they had a separate damage control crew. Unfortunately, after the explosion that rocked the flight deck, they had no damage control crew. It was then decided that everyone should have some training in that area.

Three things I take away from this. 1. The Navy, like the Marines, constantly proves throughout its history that no matter how good the tech is, the operator is vital. When we were in basic, you were told when on guard duty, if you saw someone, you had to say Stop, Stop, Stop or I'll shoot. They said say "stop three times or I'll shoot. When asked if you said Stop 3 times or I'll shoot, you can truthfully say yes.

The funny thing is that the Fat Electrician's comment about ice cream is historic! In WWII, the Navy loved ice cream so much that they had a ship that would go out to the fleet to give out ice cream. The ship could make like 10 gallons of ice cream every 7 minutes. The 3rd rule is don't get between the Navy and its ice cream.

If the ship was brought back here to Maine, then it likely ended up at Bath Iron Works (BIW as it's known here) in Bath, ME

"Proportional" depending on how you look at it, it kinda was Japan took out how much in Pearl Harbor and we droped the sun on em ...... twice. They esentially destroyed one ship so half the navy is kinda proportional
@greenpiersystem

Traumatize an island, you get fucked with the sun. Twice. You fuck up a boat, you lose half your navy. Yup, that sounds like the US military in proportions. Doesn't help that the United States has the biggest case of Tony Stark Syndrome ever. If you watch "WW2 in Space" (it's a fantastic documentary, we watched it in highschool, highly recommend it,) one of the things you'll find out is that in Pearl Harbor, they damaged a lot of shit and traumatized a lot of the service members and civilians obviously, but they didn't actually cripple shit like they wanted. The plan was to take the United States out of the equation for the Pacific. They failed, and miserably at that. One or two bombs would have blown up the massive fuel stock at Pearl Harbor for the Navy, in a massive fireball of horror, and they missed it. None of the pilots touched the fuel tanks. They also missed all of our massive carriers because they were all out on patrol in the Pacific at the time instead of being parked at home, because they were specifically trying to AVOID them so they wouldn't be caught arriving to Pearl Harbor, so when air control became important later on, we had 4 aircraft carriers that Japan didn't account for, and we were already making more shit when they were rapidly bleeding manufacturing speed as they continued to lose the war effort. And then because the fuel was still intact, while all of our initial ships were destroyed, as the ships at sea returned and the new ones arrived, they were able to be fueled out of Hawaii instead of needing to return to mainland, giving them the exact headstart into the Pacific that Japan was specifically trying to avoid. If you take a swing at the States, you better not miss, because you better believe that the "always learns from mistakes" applies here. While we also improve at punching *_ourselves_* in the face, we are great at getting hit with a random dodgeball and choosing to absolutely evaporate whoever accidentally threw it at us. -🫱🏿‍🫲🏻/🍻
