Long before I started posting AB clips, I always enjoyed watching this rare, full dance segment from the 60’s thanks to NRRA Archives (I wish they would post more dancing segments if they have them). Also, thank you to Andrew Haberman for colorizing it.
The Reflections one big hit is at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 this week.
If you haven’t already done so, please get vaccinated.
Thanks for watching!

I was born in 1951, and the sixties were the best! You will never see young people like this anywhere having fun today or exercise like this either. See how skinny kids were? And happy! American Bandstand and Mr.Dick Ckark were icons of the present and future! Never see it ever again!

The hairstyles were old and frumpy looking on the girls. I’m 58… when my grandma was 58, she looked to be 80.. the short overly curled hair and dresses with big floral prints. I think styles back in the 50’s and 60’s made people look older

Yes, because we had parents who taught us right from wrong, and consequences for your actions. And respect for elders. Kids today are taught by the school system and government. No parents! and lots of kids had single parents with no money, but they taught them proper and raised decent individuals who functioned in society. There were rules to follow, other wise the consequences were dire. We were not perfect, just more conscious. No state aid , you worked. And you did what you had to do, neighbors would help each other out!

I'm high school Class of 1965. Charleston SC. We dressed differently than the high school kids on American Bandstand. Girls wore pleated or pencil skirts, Oxford cloth blouses, and cardigan sweaters with a ribbon button band. Guys wore khaki pants, Oxford cloth shirts, sometimes V-neck sweaters. All of us wore Bass Weejuns (loafers) and Gold Cup socks. It was more of a collegiate look than the clothes here, although everyone looks very nice.

This is one of my favorite Bandstand clips from the fledgling months broadcasting from Hollywood. The dance “The Slauson” was a huge dance craze at the time and Dick promoted it on numerous occasions; this time with a fun Spotlight line dance to the hit “Just Like Romeo and Juliet” by the Reflections. The dance, presumably named after the street known for car clubs and cruise night east of the Bandstand studios, also helped DCP promote Bandstand’s move to L.A. and California culture. I still have the vinyl 45 rpm. Thanks Aaron for the flashback and thanks Andrew for the nicely done colorized version.

Don, how have you been? If I didn't see the date in the description, I would have thought this was from Philadelphia before Feb. 1964. The colorizing is getting better and better. If only Dick and ABC would have followed the lead of CBS and the Ed Sullivan production team, and saved the videotapes! I would love to know the cost of a 2", one hour reel to reel videotape back then as opposed to the cost of the payroll time and materials in converting it to a 16 mm kinescope film with developing of the negative. Obviously they were able to re-use the videotape, but from a historical perspective, there's no comparison in video and audio quality.

@@shave-a-thon3415 Hey Shave-a-thon good to see you back in the comment section. You nailed all the salient points in the preservation of Bandstand videos big time. I wish I knew the answers to your ponderings as well. We are lucky to have what exists, but there are still a minimum to 200 episodes between mid 1970 through 1974 missing in any format. Who knows? Stay well Shave-a-thon. All's well here. Though fully vaccinated, I'm now re-masking in light of the CDC recommendations. What a great time to be growing up. All of your friends were like family, and it was like you had more than one set of parents for guidance and advice. Everyone had each other's backs and friends could always be counted on to help each other. Not a need for a ton of money or judging each other on economical status, or how nice your clothes were. When going somewhere such as the movies, bowling, pizza or a burger joint, we were all one. If someone was short on cash, it was no problem, as all of the others would chip in extra, so everyone had a good time and not felt left out. I basically worked at a gas station, full time, all through high school and was more than happy to chip in during these outings. The friendship, comradery, love, and caring for each other was at level way beyond what it is today. I certainly miss those days and some of the great people that were part of growing up. I often sit and think, what would it be like if those same attitudes still existed in today's society. Instead of everyone concentrating on ME, but of WE ! I imagine the world would be a much better place!

While in Philly it was broadcast Nationally 5 days a week. Feb 1964 "The Beatles" appeared on "The Ed Sullivan Show", these 2 events marked the beginning of "THE BRITISH INVASION" , a one-2 punch to Philadelphia's top position of pop music! I graduated Olney High in June 1964. I was part of a non name band attired in Beatle wigs singing in my schools Kix 'N Kapers show in '64...memories !

Philly was #1 Musically for pop R & R until this move to LA and the British Invasion also in 1964. Not until "The Sound of Philadelphia" or "TSOP" brought back Philly into the worldwide eye for R & B in the 70s! I am a musician from Philly, based at a time in L.A.
