@@prideofthesouthlandkennels Here is my take on the whole Scott vs Johnson debate I would like to hear your honest opinion of my thoughts i respect your knowledge and passion for the breed. I'm not an expert i have read a lot and i have forgotten a lot. I am not a part of the AB breeder world. For the record i am a Scott AB man. but i bare no ill will towards the Johnson type. firstly I would like to see each line go its own way with its own name. This would end these debates. As I understand it the true standardization of the breed, keeping detailed records and having and agreed upon standard is in its infancy compare to alot of dog breeds. Here is what I believe is a rough history of the breed by all means i encourage you to correct me i would like to have it right. pre ww1 and further back in the south. The american bulldog was a farm dog used for everything, with an emphasis on mostly hog hunting and protection and farm chores. These old timers didn't care about papers and keeping exact records they cared about having a dog that could meet their needs. They wanted a dog with, super high prey drive, bigger dog powerful, some endurance with some hunting dogs instincts a decent nose, a mostly white coat so the dogs were easy to see in the woods, The early ones pre ww1 were bulldog/pit, mastiff and some kind of hound mixes, never an exact science. Not like say the doberman where a group of rich men with big kennels got together with an exact breed standard in mind with one purpose in mind, make a guard dog. These men kept meticulous records from the start with a clear path. With the AB, one old boy in one county bred what worked for him and this guys dogs caught on with his neighbors they saw how the dogs preformed and liked it. so that region had a lot of dogs that trace their lineage back to that guy. While in another county another old boy who didn't even know the fist guy breeds what worked for his purposes. It just happened that the resulting dogs in both case were very similar because in both cases these old boys needed dogs that served very similar purposes. This happens all over the south east. and you have alot of dogs that are very much a like in the south. Time passes, peoples life styles changed, how they got food changed, farming changed, hunting became for the most part recreation not subsistence. The old southern bulldogs were not needed like they once were they were a dying breed but here and there there were still some of these dogs around. Then Scot comes along his own dogs and his mermorys of the dogs of his youth, old picture of dogs from the pas,t the stories he heard form old timer souther dog men. He decides he wants to bring this type of dog back before they die out. He collected dogs that met his ideal based on his personal knowledge of dogs that he liked and really started the begging of standardization. Johnson had the same thought maybe just a bit later but to his eye he liked a more bulldog looking dog so he added some English bulldog in the mix. That look that build was the standard he was going for. Neither were wrong Scott i think went for a more traditional working breed i think Johnson was going for his own spin. So which type is better that is totally subjective. What matters is what do you like? How are you going to use the dog? With this breed Id say purity is a dumb debate at this point in time. these 2 breeds while both have deep reaching history in America. The standardization is so young compared to say AKC recognized breeds... mostly, there are politics at play in the AKC. Here is where I think people go off the rails. When somebody who doesn't know the breed, the history sees a Scott they don't know what it is. They think "maybe a pit and mastiff/bull mastiff got together maybe a pointer mixed with a mastiff type dog maybe a fox hound and a larger breed". maybe maybe maybe. But when a dog novice sees a Johnson they immediately know because of that distinctive muzzle "there is English bulldog in there, English bulldog mixed with a bigger dog maybe a mastiff but definitely English bulldog". this seems more pure to them. but a Scott to a lot of people can look like a powerful mutt Johnson's look more pure bred because it is so easy to see the EBD influence. You could mix a Scott with a pointer and some of those pups are going to look like and could pass for a Scott. but if you mix a Johnson with a pointer I'd bet every one of those pups are going to look somewhat bully.I think this is why Johnson guys can be snobby. Really, who cares what the chef puts in the soup, If the soup is delicious to you AND REPEATABLE. Which is the true AB? which is the pure AB? which is the better AB? This early on in the breeds modern, standardization process, these are dumb debates. Again I would like to see the 2 lines be there own breeds. Then we can fight over the name "American Bulldog" call the Scotts - Old Southern Bulldog. Call the Johnson - American bulldog since they look the most like a bulldog when average people think of what a bulldog looks like. and move on. My opinion I think the Scotts are truer to the original look, build and purpose but I don't think that makes them better than the Johnson. again it come down to personal preference, how are you using the dog? what look do you prefer? I'd go for Scott for bite work and hog hunting because of the longer muzzle, easier to for the dog breath. less mass equals more endurance long muzzles make it easier to get a good bite. If I were weight pulling I'd go for the Johnson, more power, heavier better traction. Both lines have unmatched heart and courage they are both stubborn knot heads to train. Im 50 years old i lost my AB Cletus 2 weeks ago. When I'm 60 i can see my self with maybe a little french bulldog less work, easier to lift, lees poop, less food, easier get a small dog the exercise they need. sorry for being so long winded.
I have pics of our Boxers from the late 70's 80's and they were as pure as pure comes they look different than todays Euro or American kinda in the middle but pure game and functional size and good size dogs and AAA Top Shelf #1 health and longevity back then if interested I can send you some pics , Thanks again as always for the time and uploads and treating all the animals you have like they should be raised and treated , I also have some interesting stories on a couple of these dogs when I was a kid dirt biking and camping with my dogs and vs dif predators or other dogs , or on my fathers small 3.5 acreage property as I grew up and the line we had was a very beautiful family dogs but could cause some shit if needed or hold up to anything , again tc and thanks for all the time and uploads
Those "Foundation dogs" look alot like my old dog Pig. He was 1/2 AB and 1/2 Pitbull. A little underbite yet Scotts type body. He was 98lbs at 1.5 years old. White with Black patches.

JD Johnson was known to mix British bulldogs and at Bernards into his Johnson bulldogs it’s a known fact. You have shown Factual proof about the history. In the Uk we have hybrid and bulldogs mixture of Scott Johnson and Hines which is suited for Peronsal protection and civil. Don Matthews added ABPT to his bulldogs for catch work.

Apbt and AM staff came from Staffordshire bull terriers. All these southern bulldogs are offshoots of English dogs. There are many varieties and all these snobs want to point fingers but regardless they were bred to be good dogs.
What are these? old southern white English? I use to have some Bulldogs and was big into in the early 00s. In 1985 we had a beautiful 60-70lb “white English” (from Alabama) is what old folks called. He was solid white with tight coat. Then in early 00s I had a small 55lb standard looking dog that had long thick coat, mean little sucker. Then in ‘03-07 I had some nice big Bulldogs 100-130lb that were Johnson crosses that come from Allen man around Huntsville. He tried to breed pure Johnson but had some really big long standard looking dogs too. Just too much work for me now haha - just get a Rottweiler or Kangal if you a want a big powerful smart dog - hahaha (sounds like blasphemy don’t it)

Glad you put some context on these dogs, and dogmen need do the same with APBT. The fact that they were all considered bulldogs at one time, I think they were mixed early on. For the APBT, there isn’t much mention about the American version/fighting dog before imports. One would assume it’s a mix of dogs and the early imports bulldog ala ambull/English white.Once bull&terrier imports came in and basically took over, I think it would make sense that American dogmen mixed their current gamest dogs into the imports to create the APBT. The am bulldog of the time was probably widely used in dog fighting as well. So there probably Is a long history of mixing what is considered an ambull with a pit bull. Ex. The scott line resembles APBTs. Since to many folks they’re just all bull dogs crossing probably happened through out the decades regularly. It wasn’t about form over function back then. If you had game, then you had game and people bread. Remember we’re really dealing with “mutts” at the end of the day LOL.

1867 is a the Bullenbeisser at one point thru the years the true Boxer lines and a few others , as a life long Boxer guy the breed has gone down in health over bred and for a certain look and now soo many issues very sad , that being said with the right research you can find a healthy Boxer line it's not easy but getting a bit better the real Bull Dog smarts , agility , speed , stamina , power , grip and performance and a trusting thinking protection game dog that can do all and a functional good muzzle in most weather not some weak frail looking 55lbs males and females even lighter boned dogs , or the big 120lbs male and over that can't do performance work block headed Bull Mastiff looking Boxers they have in Europe these days , the true working lines in between 60-90lbs depending female or male working Boxer has a perfect balance of paws , legs , chest , head to bone size and muzzle it has to be functional in every performance way and none of these health issues so many Boxers and other popular breeds have today , all the best with the Bull Dogs and your lines tc

@@kevinyoung947 Deafness and blindness are concerns. I have a bandog and Dutchie for protection training and would be looking for another for that reason. My DS breeder said the best protection dog he ever worked was a Dogo.
All the dogs were mixed. The original bulldogs don’t even exist anymore. I know some got to the states before the civil war and the infusion of terrier into the breed in the UK. It’s possible the original bulldog was a descendent of the Alaunt Gentile. It’s an ancient dog. No chance something that old doesn’t change over time. Imo the old southern white was probably the closest modern thing to the original catch/bull dogs of Europe.
People need to stop talking about mixing in breeds. The mixing in other breeds is to improve genetic material and improve on the overall dog health. When you are breeding working dogs you want quality and health not a show dog. Look at the slipped back German shepherd that use to be super nice and strong dog that got destroyed by people driven by looks. Luckily you get the original straight back in the working version in Europe that is strong and healthy.

Technically they are 10 or more breeds that are bulldogs. It’s a slang word for a type of dog. That being said, size temperament health and abilities vary among the breeds and lovers of the bulldog should take a lil time to learn. I grew up around gamebred pitbulls and around real dogmen who forgot more than I may ever know about them. I only heard them called bulldogs from those men.
