American Hall Passes Are INSANE

non americans are finally learning about all the aspects of the american school to prison pipeline 😭 my high school wouldn't let us go to the bathroom in the first and last 15 minutes of each class and we weren't allowed to go during our lunch period class bc we were supposed to go at lunch (an hour of not being allowed right after lunchtime)😐 it's a very encouraging environment for learning how to survive a future in prison

When I was in 5th grade, my teacher told a student no when they asked to go to the bathroom because they were in the middle of teaching something important or whatever. After like 10 minutes, the student asked again and the teacher still told her to wait. The student said, no, I really have to go, and went anyway. She got sent to the principal and got ISS (in school suspension) for a day for “defying authority.” Absolutely insane.

When Dan said public school teachers get paid well, that only applies to states where there is a strong teachers union (like California and New York). Other states get paid dirt.

It was so annoying you could never find a place to set the object down in the bathroom and once you did you’d forget to bring it back.

Some hall passes from my middle/high schools included: a toilet seat, a traffic cone, a rainbow baton and a 3 foot tall easel with a white bird attached, on which the teacher would write your full name and the time you left the class. It had to be left outside of the bathroom so everyone walking by knew who was in there and precisely how long you took to shit

WTF is with all of the large objects being used as a hall pass? At my school, every student was given a daily planner they would call your "agenda," which you could use to keep track of homework and project due dates. It also had a hall pass section in the back with data fields to record the date and time of the excursion with a place for your teacher to sign off on it.

And here I was thinking hall passes were just slips of paper.

This is amazing. Teach the children of the poor and working class to be policed- normalize mandatory requests for permission from a relevant authortiy to even have bodily functions.

Bruh in High School, if you were walking into school after the bell had rung, they would huddle all the “late” students in the cafeteria and give us all detention for being late. Which made us even more late!

ive been out of high school for some years now and i remember that some teachers gave out 3 passes PER SEMESTER (4 months) as bathroom passes and if you didnt use them they were uded as extra points on the exams

When I was in high school most teachers kept the hall pass by the door and you would just get up and take it and go, you didn't have to ask (unless we were in the middle of a test or something) there were some nazi teachers who made you wait until the lesson was over and/or only let you go x times a semester, but for the most part it was pretty chill at my school.

In my public high school we would be given an agenda at the beginning of the school year with 50 hall pass lines in the back and if we ran out during the school year we weren’t allowed out during class for the rest of the year.

the worst part is getting denied to go to the bathroom. I was in 12th grade (17 years old) and unexpectedly got my period and my substitute teacher wouldn't let me use the bathroom because he didn't trust us 🙃 I got up and went anyway and cried while trying to clean myself up fully expecting to get a detention. Thank God the rest of my class argued with the sub until he finally agreed to not write me up to the principal. 🙄

I had to ask permission in high school, and one time I literally had to bring in a Dr's note because the teacher was so offended by me needing to go so often (I had a uti)

From Canada, public HS never had to use those, we just asked permission

Canadian here.. I certainly remember having to ask to go to the bathroom, we couldn't just walk out of class but there was never a hall pass or monitor situation, this was a public school

For our hall passes, our teacher would have to sign, date, and time on specifically designated pages in our assignment notebooks. Teachers in the hall would actually check them too. I had one teacher who was an absolute psycho about hall passes (rarely gave them out). She was also a germaphobe (pre-panini). She would scream if you threw a tissue in the garbage can near her desk. Once I had cramps, the pain was so bad I swore I might puke or maybe die. I went the teacher and asked her to please sign my notebook so I could go to the nurse. She said “get the hell away from me, you look sick.” I begged her to sign bc the nurse would turn me away without the pass. I had my arms outstretched with my notebook and a pen so I could keep my distance while she signed. She refused. I had no choice but to leave without the pass. I went to the nurse’s office and as the nurse asked for my hall pass, I passed out from the pain 😂

at my school they make you sign in and out and keep track of how many times you would use the pass… we are only allowed 2 passes per semester

I had a teacher who literally had to write down the time and date and the student would have to sign their name when they left and she would sign when they returned. we had a specific amount of times we were "able" to go to the bathroom as well. it was fucking WEIRD.

We had to wear bright neon orange reflective mesh vests as a Hall Pass at my high school but that's because we had bomb threats called in on the daily.

Little known fact that if you carry or show a random object and just write hall pass on it you will get away 99% of the time. Worked for me in high school.

When I was in high school they implemented a hall pass system where on Monday you'd get this little cardstock hallpass with 5 lines on it where teachers would have to initial it and write the time you left and came back. And you were only allowed to use it 5 times all week. Not everyone enforced it after a while, but yeah.

We had normal small wooden piece that said hall pass, until I went to an alternative high school, there's literally no halls so no hall pass needed.

For ours in high school we had our passes in the back of our agenda and your teacher would sign and date it but you were only given 4 per semester and if you had any extra at the end of the year you could use them as bonus points on one of your final exams… but you would also use hall passes if you didn’t get to class on time… as soon as the bell rang if you weren’t in your class a teacher would make you use a hall pass or you had to go to detention Basically you used up your hall passes really fast especially if your classes were across the school and there wasn’t time to pee between classes Some teachers were cool and understood and would write you an extra pass if you used all yours up but a lot would just tell you to wait until the bell rang and hope you can get to your next class on time (I got several UTIs from holding my pee all day throughout high school)

The schools I went to, most of the time, just wouldn't let us go to the bathroom during class. They would tell us that we should have used the bathroom during our lunch break, or during the 5 minutes we had between classes.

When I went to an international school in a third world country, we were allowed to go to the restroom in groups. But then I transferred to a high school in America and… we had a nasty vest that we had to wear as a hall pass 🤢. It was so gross and everyone hated it. Also my public school did have Latin up to AP.

This is wild because in my high school, we didn’t have to carry anything crazy, but we had to carry a specific color hall pass to go to different places. Red was nurse, yellow was bathroom, orange was the gym etc It was so dumb because you had to sign out the time you left and the time you got back along with your name, the date, and your gender

I'm from the UK. We had to ask to go to the toilet and couldn't go at the same time as someone else. Sometimes the teacher would say no if it was like 10 mins before break time. Never had hall passes though and if another teacher saw you they would ask you what you were doing.

During my time in highschool (public school), we usually had bathroom passes because many times students would just ditch or take too long in the restroom which would cause a lot of problems. So like in the video, we had obscure bathroom passes to carry around, security walking around to make sure kids arent ditching or smoking in the restroom. Its literal hell in American public schools.

My HS had a spot in the school agenda where you just walked up and had the teacher sign it, you didn't have to say anything (but it was still public obviously). Some teachers didn't care and let you go whenever, just walk out. Some just had a clipboard in the room you would sign, no need to ask. I just only went in between classes and lunch - the agenda passes only had so much space, you got like 5 a semester or something. I used maybe 3 in all 4 years. We never had hall monitors, but I'm sure teachers could stop you and ask where you were going if they wanted. ETA: My HS years were '10-'14.

In my middle and high school we had 6 hall passes PER SEMESTER and they were located in the back of our planners, so we had to take our planners to the bathroom. And if you lost ur planner and you couldn’t buy a new planner for $15 you just couldn’t go. And the passing periods were only 4 minutes long and my schools were HUGE! Most people would be late in high school just because the halls were so crowded it was hard to navigate. Our lunches were only 30 minutes too & it took 20 minutes to get thru the line unless you had a classroom right next to the cafeteria and could get to the line first. & if u were even 1 penny short paying for lunch they wouldn’t let you eat.

my school had school aid which is honestly felt like they hired our degenerate uncles and cousins to walk-around and tell us to go to class.😂 I didn't grow up in the best neighborhood so it's funny now looking back at it. Some of those school aids were walking around in baggy jeans,Tim's, heavily tattooed,blasting music thru their earbuds yelling at us to keep it moving or to get out the bathroom.

My grandma was a teacher from about the mind 70’s to the very early 2000’s and her hall pass was an old broken heavy typewriter that had metal plate screwed on the back with her room number on it.

At my school we had little paper slips, and the teachers had to write on it "Bathroom" or "locker". When I was in high school I had this super laid back, hippie teacher named Mr. Chalfant who taught government for my study hall, for example when my mom had him like 20 years prior, their final exam was to write a paper on what they thought "Lucy in the sky with Diamonds" was about, plus he was also retiring at the end of that year so he really didn't care about anything at all. He gave my friend and I a hall pass that said "library" but the rude, stuck up librarian saw us go to our lockers first, and she made some huge deal about it, and how it should have said "locker than library" and sent us back to Mr. Chalfant. He called her on the phone, and was like "seriously?" and she went on and on complaining about these are the rules, he then called her a "fing b*tch" and hung up on her. It was great. Then wrote us a pass that said "hallway" so we could just walk around everyday lol He was the best.

Being from Australia we dont have hall passes but we had to put our hand up and ask to go to the toilet. Also some teachers would give you a time limit between 2 - 5 minutes. When I was in grade 7 one of my teachers gave me 2 minutes to come back, (mind you from that classroom it was like a 2 minute walk to the toilets anyway). Being a 12 year old girl I was on like my like 5th period so I was still getting use to sanitary items and what not. Away It took about 10 minutes to get back and I got detention for 3 days. I had to explain to the teacher why It took me so long, in my first detention with her and yes I said HER! She said it didn't matter and I still had to do the 3 detections with her. But this teacher was horrible in general, I have another period story with her, and it wasn't just me she said it too, but I won't say anything if people don't want to hear it.

Idk if it’s all Americans in these comments but I 100% remember needing a hall pass to use the toilet, now we didn’t actually call it a “hall pass” and there was no designated “guards” for the halls, but you would most certainly get stopped and questioned by any teachers who happened to be out of the classroom.

It honestly depends on the school and the teacher. Some teachers were strict and wouldn’t let you go during their class at all. And some would say. “Hey you don’t have to ask to go to the bathroom, it is a human bodily function, you don’t need permission, just go” and the reason they had bathroom passes was probably because there were kids who skipped class, and skip class in the bathroom to smoke, so when you have a bathroom pass the teachers knew you were accounted for
