Mah jongg is the 4-player Chinese tile game that took America by storm in the 1920s. One of the things that differentiate American mah jongg from all the other versions is the use of jokers. Jokers can be used for any block of tiles consisting of 3 or more identical tiles. Joker bait is a term coined by Tom Sloper (goo.gl/wG7YAR). Basically, joker bait is made up of multiples that you keep even if you do not need them. You discard one of the tiles from the multiple to coax an exposure with jokers. You can also hold onto single valuable tiles like Flowers and Dragons. During the pick and discard phase of the game, when someone makes an exposure with a joker using those tiles, you may be able to make an exchange using the natural tile to get the Joker. Be mindful to get rid of them before the end of the third wall. In this video, I play a game of solitaire to demonstrate the concept.

Excellent! Joker bait is a great strategy but timing is critical as is awareness - watch the wall and your opponents exposures, discards AND body language!

I liked seeing how you handled that extra tile. Several days ago you referred me back to the American Mah Jongg series because of a question i had. I'm glad you did. When i was first learning several months ago, i wanted to get familiar with the 2019 card so i kind of skipped over the American series. Now i see that was a mistake. Lots to learn in this series even if not that familiar with the mock card -- and knowing the 2019 card does not get in the way.

you forgot to discard after the kang of 3 bam. that's why there was an extra tile for east. you were preoccupied with the joker bait.

Michelle...you are fearless! You love the news hands and the year hands. I. Noticed that at times you may have only “1” wind tile after the Charleston and you bravely go for “NEWS”. Same for year hands! It was suggested to me that if you have chosen a hand that needs a pair ” after the Charleston is over, and you do not have the pair it is best to go for another hand. What are your thoughts on that? Another awesome video!

I also have a question about choices. For example, around 14:00 minutes you mentioned for South "like numbers with NEWS" and later mentioned that you needed a kong of 1s for that hand. I see pairs of NEWS with pairs of like numbers but not as you described. What am I missing?

Your videos are marvelous and really help me learn! How can you use 3 white dragons as Joker bait? Would you be hoping that someone would claim it and kong it with 2 Jokers?

Thanks, Pam. Joker Bait can be multiples of any tile. Sometimes a player will expose a kong with 2 jokers and if you have joker bait in your rack with those tiles, on your turn, you can exchange both jokers!

There are typically 2 hands in the 13579 (odds) category that use all the tiles and the other combinations use 135 (little odds) or 570 (big odds).
