Mah jongg is the 4-player Chinese tile game that took America by storm in the 1920s. Tile efficiency for American mah jongg is a complex topic. I generally see 2 strategies, Maximum Usage and Targeted onset. Maximum Usage is where a player selects a category or hand that uses the most of their tiles regardless of multiples. Targeted Onset is where a player identifies multiples then gathers the rest of the tiles in their hand to support them. When they run out of discards, they whittle down their category or pick a hand. In this video, we’ll compare the two and compare results.

Hi Michele, I'm really enjoying your video series. I've learned a lot! I also noticed in this video that South could have called Mah Jongg slightly sooner (at the 37.47 point). Here's why: At 15.00 South had a pair of 9 bams and it was stated that it needed a pung. However, at 31.15 West drew a 9 bam and discarded it. This could have been claimed by South for the pung of 9 bams, which would have resulted in South calling Mahj when it drew its first joker at 37.47 (instead of when it drew its second joker at 38.48). This is a great learning tool, thank you!

Yes, I missed the first 9 Bam at 31:15 which would have changed the picking order thereafter. Thankfully, there is one more that could be claimed or picked when they were ready to win at 37:37. The funny thing is, players miss calling opportunities in a live game because they are otherwise distracted. It's even more funny that they self-picked a joker for their win LOL

Hi Michele..I am so thrilled with your videos, my sister has been after me to learn Mah Jongg for a long time and I knew it would not be easy to learn so I hesitated. Your videos are so super in instructions that I think I'll learn faster. Thanks so much for making these available.

Hi Michelle, I agree that in the long run targeted onset is a more consistent winning strategy. The strategy obviously depends on having multiple tiles in your hand at the outset or early in the Charleston. Thus, I more often find myself playing maximum usage through the Charleston and frequently wind up one or two tiles short when another player calls Mah Jongg. Does it make sense to play targeted onset without multiples at the start of the Charleston? Thanks again for all your helpful videos.

I agree with you. If I don't have multiples, I use Maximum Usage. When a multiple forms, I reassess and use Targeted Onset.

Very difficult to know that you are using a mock card and not seeing it from the onset. Spent time searching for winning hand on card and could not find. Had to read the comments to find information on where you were going. Agree that you should have your mock card posted so players learning game can see where you are in your game.

Lidia Viehman there is a prompt to download the mock card at 1:59 in the video, there is information about it in the video description, and there there is a pinned post under the video. For the future, any video with “American Mah Jongg” in the time used the mock card. I explain this in the intro video as well.

Is a tile considered “dead” when the next player puts their tile in there rack or when the next player “clicks” their tile?

I think it is very confusing when you use your mock card. I spent the entire video trying to figure out what you were doing which took away from any learning I might have had. At the very least, you should state verbally in your introduction that you are using a mock card and also print it digitally on the screen throughout the game so viewers are aware so that there is not any confusion. I won’t watch any more of your videos with your mock card as even though in theory the skills may be transferable, in reality it does nothing to develop my speed and familiarity with the 2018 card.

@@AS-id6mf Based on your comment, you must already know how to play or you would not have mentioned your desire improve as a player using the current NMJL card. If this is what you are looking for, watch videos titled "National Mah Jongg League" where I do skill builders using the current NMJL card. You might enjoy the NMJL videos and especially Solitaire+ where I focus on tile efficiency and strategy using the current card. Viewers who watch the videos in these introductory playlists are just learning to play and more likely than not they have seen the first video in the series where I explain the use of the mock American mah jongg card. I explain that I use the mock American mah jongg card in the video descriptions for these lessons and pin a post about it under every video. I also added an information card to the beginning of every video in the American Mah Jongg Lesson to flag the viewer to download the mock card.
