The thing is, you can't accuse Rammstein of being hypocritical here. Yes, they do go pretty hard on the US in this song, but they go WAY harder on Germany itself in their song Deutschland.
The Mikey Mouse line has a double meaning: on the one hand , it is a reference to the Disneyland Paris theme park, on the other hand to France as ally of the US. In general Rammstein saying that too much culture of many countries in the world are getting americanized and so they are losing a big part of their idendity and culture. In the video it is visualized with the people in traditional clothing eating junk food. The muslim praying in the direction of an oil fiels is another aspect: America's thirst for oil. Most of the oil is from the middle east and oil became the new god. Also, the lyrics are about political influence of America: The U.S. want to "lead the dance", and "those who don't want to dance don't know yet they have to". This is a direct reference to the gulf war in 2003, when some states like France and Germany refused to join a war against Iraq because they were not convinced that Saddam Hussein was involved in the 9/11 attacks or got WMDs.
Thank you for still supporting "innocent until proven guilty". And btw, Rammstein has a lot of political songs. Maybe you didn't like what they said about America but I agree with them and also they spent a lot of time there before releasing this song, so they are talking from their own perspective and experience. But what I want to say is, you asked something like "hasn't your country done some bad stuff too?" Well, just go for "Deutschland" and you will see that they, of course, have their opinion about that too and are not afraid to express it.
Yeah that is the difference, rammstein does not try to hide the bad stuff that happen in the song Deutschland while a lot of Americans only see the good side of their country.
@@carlmonni5136 Well, the most of Rammstein songs many people don't like for one reason or another. Mostly because the topic is "too sensitive" for them, or they don't understand the message... also, the reason is often that the truth hurts. 🙄
MAYBE you should have looked up when the Song was published? It came at the time of the illegal war of aggression in Iraq and Afghanistan The song was a protest against these wars. And then the comment "coming from a guy, they have bad things in their closet" . It's called whataboutism. There was once. Our Generation (born in the 80s) has nothing to do with it. But you're 40 years old, how much BS has America made during your lifetime/ generation? And how much crap has Germany in the last 40 years? Yeah. America from the state illegal drone wars, NSA wiretapping scandal around the world even heads of state, Guantanamo torture camp, illegal wars of aggression over 2 million dead thanks to Bush and Obama. Millions of refugees from the Middle East, that don't come to the USA but to Europe, because of the US foreign politics And Germany on the other side? Last 40 years? I wait. Many countries can certainly criticize Germany for the time of World War II, but certainly not USA. USA, with genocides against the Native Americans, with slavery, racism, the only country that dropped atomic bombs on people. Countless illegal wars of aggression and regime changes and mostly democratically elected president were changed against fascists, like the e.g. In Chile with the philanthropist Augusto Pinochet The Germans are processing their past, including the bad times. Those times are not only taught here at school on a permanent basis. There are so many actions in society, the famous stumbling stones, e.g. how many such actions are there in the USA? Or how much is taught in American schools about the genocide of Native Americans,, slavery, racism, atomic bombs, Diskrimination against the German and Japanese Americans during and after WWI and WWII? Operation paperclip, how much is taught in US schools about the bad side of the US? And: After rammstein loved to play in the US at the end of the 90s, they noticed how society and mood in the country became so hostile towards foreigners after 2001, that they didn't play a single concert in the US for ten years.
As an American, I completely agree with the big middle finger this song gives us. Trust me, most of us are sick of this country. And we apologize to the rest of you.
You have the same problem so many else have. Politicians thinking the public should serve them, while the idea was the other way around. I know it is bad in the US, but trust me, the scandinavian countries are not far behind. And just look at China and Russia... Well, it's been a while since the latest revolution. Next one could be right around the corner.
"The mind of the average American is very well described as "naive". The only thing the American knows about the world is "we are the good guys". There's nothing better than a clear view of the world, because then the day has structure." - Volker Pispers (German cabaret artist) -
I really felt this...in the years since like 2011, I've been inside and outside the US, living in two different countries besides the States. And it was PAINFUL realizing that while America is pretty great--it is also pretty fkn evil and terrible. All the rest of the Western world has better governments, as in social safety nets and multi-party systems. NZ was the first country to give women the right to vote, and the Netherlands was the first country to give rights to homosexuals. Meanwhile, the US has 700 military bases OUTSIDE the US and has supported evil dictators as long as they weren't Commies. I mean--it really hurt learning these things. I love the US...but we just simply aren't the heroes we claim to be. We've done amazing wonderful progressive things but at some point we kinda stopped.
If all these other places are so wonderful. Why is everyone killing themselves to get here? I was born in Germany in 197x with dual citizenship, I have lived all around the world Since then in peace and war.... I did not choose to serve twenty nine years in the german army, that's for sure. I don't claim we Are now or have ever been perfect or ever will be.... But we're always trying to be better Than our past selves. We stopped participating in wars of conquest for territorial expansion a long time ago. That is why at the end of the day worldwide. We are still the best deal going..... The American dream is not dead. It is just hard to see for those who refuse to believe in its pursuit..... And yes , it is a pursuit , not a promise , not a guarantee and not an outcome.

11:30 this is embarrassing.. Germany is probably the country that talks about/showcases/regrets their history the most in the most blunt, honest way. Can't say the same about the US.
08:00 Punk came from England, not USA. And spread through Europe pretty fast, including into communist countries. I'm Polish, we had incredibly huge punk scene in the 80's, and punk was probably the biggest subculture here during those days. I think that part of it was living under a totalitarian regime, but not as oppressive as some others behind the iron curtain.
But we talk about our history and don't hide it in the closet. Just look at Rammstein's " Deutschland". We even teach our history in schools. What is your agenda and innuendo?
this is such a bs. Germans are great at hiding/twisting small parts or the whole meaning of some parts of their history and anyone who is a part of country that was deeply hurt by german nazis can tell you that after working with some germans. Every nation have some dark cards in their past but pls dont tell me that germany can speak about it better then others because its bs.
@@wartmcbeighnwhy would we learn world history when.. 1.) it has little relevance to ours 2.) it distracts from more important American history we can’t fit It’s like how we don’t cover much of world war 2’s early history that didn’t involve us because we have to cover how if we joined the League of Nations after world war 1 there wouldn’t have been such a large 2nd world war
Guys, the song is pure irony and sarcasm, a parody of the American endeavour to always and everywhere set the tone - whether others want it or not, whether others like it or not. America's "leadership role" is taken for a ride here ... a critical examination of this "leadership role", which is primarily dictated by politics and the American "world" economy.
The line that hit's the hardest in this song is "I don't speak my mother's tongue." So many children in school have been cautioned against or straight up punished for not speaking English through the years. While some families have maintained 2 or 3 languages within the home, a lot of people do not due to pressures from many different directions. It is better now, but we still have a full generation who grew up with things like the Native schools that tried to eliminate Native American culture and history via indoctrination. My boss is Creole but can't speak it anymore because she was sent home with letters about how it was rude to speak in a language no one else understands in grade school.
I grew up in America but because of my disability I was taught American Sign Language so that was technically my first spoken language. As I started being able to speak better in elementary school I was forced to only use English and eventually forgot basically all of ASL.
For me as a German woman, Native American cultures are the only true American cultures and I would love to learn more about it. It's such a shame because hardly anyone speaks these languages anymore and so much has been lost.
Agree, back in the 80/90ish a lot of the movies comming from the US had great story, sprinkel with a bit of indoctranation, now it is pure indoctrination without any good stories.
Yeah, exactly. Watch Rammstein - Deutschland. Till disses (or rather curses) his motherland on the video. Controversy - that's what Till Lindemann is all about
You missed the bigger meaning in the scene with the kids in the saffron (yellow-orange) robes. They are wearing traditional Hindu garb...and eating beef. That's like watching a Muslim or Hebrew person eat pork!
ARE YOU JOKING?? 😂 We have military bases around the world because both world wars proved that our isolationism enabled the wars and that we were capable of preventing these wars without those bases there would have already been a 3rd world war

I hate to tell you, but our Empire is crumbling, while WE make sure no other countries don't drop the dollar, we level sanctions, coup other countries, kill their innocent people, steal their natural resources blind and we tell the American public that THEY are the problem. An Empire is it's last throes of death. That's us. The good ole USA. Inflation, mandates, censorship by the MSM about their own government. We're not run by the government, we're run by Corporations. The only way they can defend themselves is through us, so we will dismantle their military, strip away everything that might make them a danger to us in the future and bind them to us through contracts and money, whilst telling our blinded folks at home how everyone is against us, so they support us, join our ranks and get sent to these countries to do the job we are to rich and valuable to do ourselves".
This song is largely about the USA only being about itself. I mean I'm glad I was born in West Germany. Only 3 km from the East German border. And our people are really grateful to you Americans for liberating us from the Nazis. We will never forget that. Just sometimes you could be a little more humble. If you are criticized even a little, you will immediately become angry. You're immediately sensitive. I know. My country Germany has taken on a very heavy burden. There is no excuse for what happened back then. However, you can only do one thing. Working through all of these things. And anyone who has ever been to Germany and Europe knows that Germany (fortunately) processes its history very well, in contrast to some other countries that have never done so. They also committed genocide. Millions of times too. I'm just thinking of Turkey and the Armenian genocide. Or Russia's Stalinist purges. Nothing is processed there. But there are many more that could be mentioned. Because if you don't deal with your shameful deeds, there will never be any improvement.
The question is not only in the spread of American culture, but also in the imposition of American values (and not in its pure form, but as politicians want in one case or another), which is a screen for control over other countries. If you reread the first verse, it clearly follows: America seems to know better what is good and what is bad; and if America does not lead a round dance, then at least she should control it.
German person here: I loosely translated a few key lyrics: “When we dance I want to lead, even when you’re by yourself when you’re turning Let us control you a bit I'll show you how to walk right” - “We” are the countries, the lyrical I is the USA. “We create a lovely round dance All violins play the sound of freedom Music comes from the White House And in front of Paris stands Mickey Mouse” - the USA sees itself as the liberator of the world, when in truth “freedom” is just their metaphor for conquering the world through war and economical invasion “I know the very useful steps And I will protect you from missteps And who does not want to dance at the end Does not know that he must dance” Those lines highlight that especially. It points to the massive global propaganda for the desirability of the Americanization that the US is working really hard to push so that no one ever realizes that the US is actually working on their empire. I mean war in the name of freedom in Iran, Iraq, Syria, Economical invasion of South America and Africa, troops still stationed in Japan, Germany and the likes, and those are the most obvious conquests…? I love the US for its people but when you visit countries like Mexico and Venezuela, and you see all the poverty that is created by corruption that is pushed by American investors and you see how they privatize local water resources and then proceed to sell Coke for less than water, you start to seriously dislike the system “USA”.
Troops still stationed in Japan? What’s the issue with that? 😂 Yall act like China and North Korea haven’t been threatening Japan with invasion since world war 2 ended We are there for the same reason we are in South Korea
@@Dante.- above all, Japan should have the right to have an army and the ability to defend itself and not rely on your dubious help and what's wrong with having a foreign country's army on your soil? @@marsst1918 😂 no 1. We’ve literally encouraged Japan to have a good military since the conclusion of World War II, it’s them choosing not to invest in a military beyond the defense force they have 2. That’s a false equivalency because you are forgetting the Japanese literally asked us to be there, because the Chinese openly had been threatening them with genocide since the conclusion of the Second World War
@@Dante.- the first is a lie... after World War 2 you forced them to sign a new constitution in which it is written that they must not have an army (specifically in Article 9) "the Japanese people forever renounce war as a sovereign right of the nation and the threat or use of force as means of settling international disputes", and "land, sea, and air forces, as well as other war potential, will never be sustained."' in 1952 the occupation officially ended, but Japan agreed to continue to host American military bases (which are still there today).. the big breakthrough was in 1954 when America agreed to Japan's right to defend itself and allowed them to establish the JSDF (Japan Self Defense Force ) which are still limited to equipment and technology precisely through Article 9 so the second statement is not a lie, but just a confirmation of what I say... given the factor that they cannot have a proper army because of you, they have to rely on your dubious help despite the fact that they don't want you there (which is proven by the amount of protests and efforts to shut them down) so no really it's not about how they don't want an army at all and they want you there badly but they can't fire you or start an army without the risk of political conflict...
@@marsst1918 1. It has been within their own hands to get rid of article 9 for years We are now longer, forcing them to do anything 2. Give me any proof that we do not want them to have a military. You should watch the video of Deutschland. The entire Germany is displayed in this clip. Very very symbolic, and the clip is like a movie video. You've never seen anything like it for a music band.
The song was released in 2004, in the context of the Second Iraq War. Large parts of the world were very critical of the USA at the time. The song describes the zeitgeist of the time.
its so funn yso manyy americansonly understand the we are living in amerika its wunderbar part and think its a praising song even tho they starte in english this is not a love song multiple times

@@OgreKev english is a normal thing to learn in my country. we get taught at school. i also speak and read english next to dutch. for me its almost the same.
I absolutely love them! Saw them in LA last September.... hands down best show I have ever experienced. You might want to check out some of their "making of" videos..... behind the scenes with the band members, directors and others while making the videos.... they are a lot of fun to watch, including the one for this song. They are saying that it isn't a love song, due to the American culture infiltrating just about every other country... and not always for the common good of that country's culture.
But it also says a lot about France, who are trying to protect their own culture from foreign influences. Many English words that have been adapted from other languages are replaced by French words in France.
Rammstein always criticize ironically and quite well weighed. The own country Germany is criticized by Rammstein in "Deutschland" and "Radio" much sharper and more often. In Germany (especially in the West), people take a very critical look at war in school - especially at their own inglorious past. Rammstein, as an East German band, do the same - a good thing!
I'd add something. I believe even "I don't sing my mother's tongue" line has at least double meaning. Not only in this song, but even in general - german as many of other languages experiences a hard pressure of english. Mine as well, though it's neither english nor german.
Good reaction guys! 😄Fun how he says "you don't have any skeletons in your closet?" when they have the song "Deutschland" and go way harder on themselves. 😂😂😂 So maybe you should react to that one too, is a very good song, the video has top notch production and the topics they touch. Man! 😄
The song is fuckin brilliant alone, with powerful riffs, catchy chorus and the keyboard solo. But the video is so well made that it will always be a favorite of all times of mine. And the space drum kit is cool as fuck.
Ren and Rammstein reactions all day long. They never get old. Thank you for doing what you do. I am American but can see the faults in our world influence. This song has it spot on from the outside looking in. Also, please react to the Deutschland official music video. Deutschland talks about how hard is it to love a country like Germany when it's so easy to hate it.
the thing is, histroy is written by winners, not by facts. Volker Pispers, a german cabaretist did a show on how usa's foreign politics based on facts. you should check it out (or Die Anstalt, a shorter version with less details). doesn't have to be on cam, but it would be nice ^^
Always thought it was kinda funny that, on the album, the song right after this was "Moscow". I love when the undertones of Laibach's influence and humor shows through with them.
and if so, as long as nothing is proven, everyone is innocent. ever heard of that?.....my opinion, especially people like Till and the rest of the band, who are standing in the spotlight, are great food for such stories...
The difference is that most Germans are very aware of the skeletons in our closet. It takes up most of our education in my experience. We studied the history of Germany pretty extensively in all its facetts and aspects. Obviously the most prominent thing anyone thinks of is the WW2. And I promise no details were spared. Most schools (if they can) will have you visit concentration camps in 9th grade usually and see first hand what was happening there. There are videos even. Belongings of the people murdered there etc. The most disgusting thing was a lamp made of human skin. Of course we also discuss the afterwar period as well! We also talk about how Germany is doing today, the issues in the country etc. Im not saying Americans ARENT aware of issues, of course you are you live there. But its not as if Germany shy away from our history (some still do of course, cause idiots exist everywhere) I am not saying that Germany is an amazing country that does everything right and is better than any other country bc it is not. But one thing I DO like is that, at least in my education, nobody tiptoed around the truth.
as in most Rammstein videos its the irony, especially the wearing of the space suits..landing on the Moon was easily America's finest hour but today a lot of Americans still think its was faked.
As a german, many meanings got lost in translation.. the song tells about how amercian see themselfs.. the pictures though show the real impact. Like the boys with coke and burgers are a symbol of how the unhealthy fastfood made it to ... 3. world countries... the thing about Rammstein is theres alwas a 3. Deep meaning, resulting of the chosen german words.. hard to explain. The fast food thing for example is just a way of telling about the aggressive "you have to adopt like we want it to" for example the extrene agressive launching of McDonalds chains all over the world. This would even get deeper into the " world police role".. but I will end it here.. However, the difference is how the government and shool system teaches you mainly the good things about america or internal problems.. but the rest of us see and feel the ongoing problems made by the US (Government and big companies)
The worst thing any country can do is not recognizing their own mistakes and owning them. I'm from Europe (not from Germany) and if there's something i'll always respect Germany for is how they owned their past mistakes. That is something i can only dream and wish that the US could do.
I live in a small town and when I was younger we had a ban on chains. Everything was mom and pop. But in good old 2023 most of the mom and pops are gone. Fast junk food and Walmart have run them off.
Rammstein's songs are not divided into good or bad. Nor is it a "diss" to America. It is criticism. Both positive and negative. America, like every country, has a history of cruel and compassionate moments. The video itself shows America as the messenger of peace, leading and giving to other nations. If you only listen to the song once in passing, you might miss the critical part because everything looks like "good vibes". The part "this is not a love song" is not meant to express hate, but to make it clear that it is not a hymn of praise.
The song is in 2004 context and (unfortunately) keeps validated today more than ever BTW: the "moon" stage is that, during those years many were skeptics about the US moon landing
FYI: AS a Gen X'er with a Wonderbra they were the absolute BIGGEST brand on the fucking planet at the time. It was a ridiculously expensive(yet no where near the price of modern day SpanX)padded push up bra that had actual liquid filled pouches in the bra for a "more natural feel and fit". Women would fight like they trying to get a Cabbage Patch Kid in the '80's when the first came out. I wore it for about a week but it I honestly didn't need it so I went "fuck it" and back to a normal bra cause God overly blessed me in my chest. You have absolutely no idea how revolutionary just the idea of anything other then heavy cotton or poly padding was. If anyone likes SpanX kneel to the alter of the old Wonderbra because that is where it came from.
German schools are finding that their kids are more proficient in English than in German. Don really caught on to the meaning of this song when he talked about American brands infiltrating foreign day-to-day living. It doesn't matter where you go in the world anymore, we're all living in America.
"This is not a love song", but it's not a hate song either. The song is not about USA's wars, but the culture exports the US has provided the last several decades, making people from very different parts of the world feel like they kinda grew up in the US. Hence the Mickey Mouse and Paris line fx, and the pictures of Tibetan monks eating fast food. I read in an interview with Till at the time of the song's release, that the US was like a tasty cake. Delicious at first, but if you eat (or is fed) too much, you kinda get nauseous.
I think, when I see the video and they sing " we all living in America" they meant that America is a big mix of cultures, colours. America is Amerindian, black people, Germans, frenchs, Irish's, Italian, russians and and and. But in the politics world today, America think they can tell all the world how it works, how to live etc. So I think it is a bit critical.
This song is a parody of the American Way! Believe me, the world is tired of the constant interference in the internal politics of many countries! Americans, take back your country! Greetings from Bulgaria!
Speaking of skeletons in their own closet, they address just that in their video deutchland. You guys should check it out next if this made you clutch your pearls.
you have to watch out for the irony in their videos with Rammstein! It's very difficult sometimes, but that's the show behind it! Rammstein is pure satire! Their shows are mega elaborate and cost thousands of dollars. Every show is like a movie or a fever dream. But it's always worth it!
The song probably sings how America controls the world, wants it and everyone dances to its tune, figuratively speaking. For example - Wenn getanzt wird will ich fuehren, Auch wenn ihr euch alleine dreht, Lasst euch ein wenig kontrollieren, Ich zeige euch wie's richtig geht, (When there's dancing, I want to lead Even if you turn alone Let us control you a little I show you how it's done,) Or - Ich kenne Schritte die sehr nuetzen, Und werde euch vor Fehltritt schuetzen, Und wer nicht tanzen will am Schluss, Weiss noch nicht dass er tanzen muss. (I know steps that are very useful And will protect you from missteps, And if you don't want to dance at the end, Don't know yet that he has to dance). And then another - We're all living in America, amerika ist wunderbar, We're all living in America, America, America, We're all living in America, coca-cola, sometimes war, We're all living in America, America, America. Here it is so clear. Vietnam, Iraq, Yugoslavia, Syria, Afghanistan, etc. At the same time, everyone in America, that is, they eat hamburgers and drink Coca-Cola. And the scene at the end, when the video is being filmed, is a joke about America's flights to the moon, which, according to many versions, are considered fake. One big lie. If only because the flights were so long ago and turned out, and then the technologies developed, and the flights all stopped, strange, then they refused to give this soil to anyone for a long time, etc. Probably they wanted to say this in the song secretly, it seems to me so, I could be wrong.

@@FUNandGAMEAxelTlexA Again…. None of the lyrics you mentioned are even in this song. The play of words in ‘Du hast’ is that when marriage vows are given, they are given with the feeling “You *have* me,” (du hast) but long term relationships can be tough, and feelings can morph into “you *hate* me” (du hasst). The “hidden meaning” here is simply the presence of the homophone (2 words that sound the same, but have different meanings).
I’ve really enjoyed you deep dives into Rammstein. All cred to you for bringing up the things you did in the end of the video as well. I would love to see you react to Heilung performing Krigsgaldr live. I think you would like that on many different levels!
It'd basically a song about how no matter what country you live in you might as well live in America because everything we are sold or spoon fed is American and very much in a negative way.
very cool reaction duo, now as you dive a little bit into the causa rammstein I highly recommend Moskau (you'll probably get as live performance only) and especially also the "Ausländer" video. Crazy how much this song reflects today on the US recent events, this middle finger to the US is pretty valid, you guys talking shit to these guys but listening to Deutschland shows these guys are self aware of what Germany has done to the world in the past, everyone should be proud of their country(where they’re from) but has to recognize the mistakes their country is held responsible for. Proud to be American but not proud of actions that be taking place, I totally understand why countries be annoyed of being “Americanized” takes away their culture yet I’m a big believer of cultures should share customs and beliefs! that’s how we can grow as a world and move together as a society.
This Song is not about making the US bad in any sence, it's rather about showing the influence of western culturer around the gobe. (American, European, Asian....)
The message is actually that we are on this earth all living in America. Everywhere the US has a influence. positive , negative it doesn't matter. The US is everywhere. And it is a fact that the US forces it's way of living on the world. Even if we (the rest of the world) don;t want it.
