As far as I know, in the Second World War, the plans of the Soviet leadership did not include scorched earth tactics. Soviet troops fought the Germans in various battles throughout 1941, occupied the defense lines, trying to stop the advance of the Germans. It is important to understand that the Germans were stopped near Moscow before the onset of winter. If you really blame the weather, then you have to blame the autumn mud, which interfered with tanks. In fact, a counteroffensive of the Soviet army was carried out in winter, which the cold was clearly not good for.

You are correct! People tend to fall for the German excuses of the winter. The reality is that the Germans stopped themselves early when they had the Soviets on the run, and by the time Operation Typhoon commenced the Soviets had regained their balance. One can actually pin-point the moment: Guderian's 2nd Panzer Army took Smolensk on 16 July 1941 and was poised to drive on Moscow immediately. At the time the Soviets had very, very little defending Moscow. Hitler ordered a halt with Fuhrer Directive 33, and turned Guderian and other elements of Army Group Centre around to help reduce the giant Kiev Pocket, and to mop up Soviet armies encircled by Guderian's advance. A whole month was lost to the Germans. In the meantimes, the Soviets had built another two defense lines in from of Moscow and had organized a number of divisions to man them. The Germans than had to fight their way through heavy resistance as well as the autumn rains, and the winter. It was a giant mistake on their part.

@@crownprincesebastianjohano7069 According to TIKHistory, even if Hitler had granted approval or given the order to immediately advance on Moscow, Guderian likely would never have been able to get to the city anyway, much less take it. Also, the Soviets placed explosives throughout the city when the Axis were closing in on it. Had the latter somehow taken the settlement, they would probably have been obliterated shortly afterward. In my opinion, the invasion of the USSR was doomed from the start.

@@CMY187 Every city in imminent danger of being taken by the enemy is booby-trapped. It never stopped anyone. Moreover, Moscow was not a prize to occupy. Simply holding it catastrophically disrupts Soviet logistics and transportation. I disagree with TIKHistory's assessment.

I think its pretty common to root for those in disadvantage(in numbers), maybe thats a reason you picked the swedes (and ofc Karl XII).

My friend, if you had seen me IRL you would have been astonished and have asked yourself if we are twin brothers, but with 20 years differneces. Ok, im a bit older than you (Im 60 +) and have blue eyes, but when I look at you its like looking at myself in the mirror. However I very much like to look at your videos on this channel. If you are supporting the the swedes, thats not mysterios. We are a very genorous and welcoming people if you treat us right, we don't have to many prejudices and first of of all. We love americans. Maybe not exactly the same I know. But today a lot of people i've seen say the current swedish army is small. It's still bigger than carolus rex had when he defeated Denmark, Poland-Lithuania and even Russia at first. Same as then we didn't focus on big armies, we focused and still do on the quality of our soldiers and their weapons. Yet still we marched on Russia and refused to give in to the Russian demands. In some way it's relevant to this day. We're not afraid of the Russians despite our smaller numbers
@crownprincesebastianjohano7069

Well, the Swedish Army is small right now. The defense cuts in the 90s and 2000s reduced it too much in my opinion. That said, it is being grown. And we know Sweden is capable of fielding a very powerful military. Sweden had one of the most powerful militaries during the Cold War with an Army with Reserves was 850,000, with the 4th largest air force in the world, on par with France and Britain, without the nukes and with a much smaller nation. And not just numbers, as you say, Sweden has very advanced weapons.

I tend to agree with Carl Johan's assessment of Karl XII. Great general, covered himself in martial glory. But a disaster for Sweden. The checks written for the expansion of the already maybe too big Empire were simply too big for a country with a small population to underwrite. It only ever took one big defeat to knock the legs out from underneath it. Karl XII, like Napoleon, did not know when to quit. And like the Corsican, he also believed that tactical victories could always make up for strategic shortcomings. Ultimately, a wise king is much like Kenny Rogers. He knows when to hold them, and he knows when to fold them. He knows when to walk away. Karl did not, and it cost him his life, and Sweden an empire.

You should really try out Sabaton, a Swedish power metal band that sings songs about warhistory. They even got their own history Chanel, there they explain the songs, all facts!

hm... I'm not so sure about these numbers. I remember another similar video talking about how at least 7000-9000 of the swedish army had gang green and/or were starving and did NOT participate in the actual battle. And that the Swedes rushed straight into battle with only about 9000 men.
@user-pg9qb3wy7s

I'm not sure about these numbers either. I saw the opinion that the Russian army was smaller, since 20 thousand of this number did not take part in the battle

I think by the end of the battle when peter came out in a line, he had 20 000 men on a 2km line and the swedes numbered 4000.. they eventually charged and the russians started to back off but something happened and the swedish advance stopped. At this time the "nyland" cavalry regement arrived and saw that things were not going well, they charged and sacrificed themselves so that some of the infantry could flee.. If im wrong about this im sorry.. just a story that stuck in my head from some historybook..

The Swedes had a force 30,000 strong, and the Russians 75,000; however, neither side used their full strength in the battle. The Swedes used 8,700 infantry, 7,800 cavalry, and only 4 cannon. The Russians used 24,500 infantry, 14,600 dragoons, 3,000 Kalmuks, and 86 cannon. Also, the Swedish forces weren't in very good shape. They had just survived one of the worst winters in memory, and Lewenhaupt's supply column which they were counting on was destroyed at the Battle of Lesnaya.

The ultimate question is... "How did Swedes and the Scandinavians become so rich?" Were they 'paid off by the Catholic Church, to stop raiding?
@daniel_sc1024
@daniel_sc1024 Год назад
Sweden came to control the three main rivers of northern Germany, thus controlling and taxing trade in their port cities.

I'm sure you'd like to believe that the Church paid them off.
