I agree with your thoughts on the names. Many of the words we use, especially in the sciences, come from Greek and Roman myth. Chronometer and other words relating to time coming from Chronos. Tantalus, who was forced to stand in water that receded when he tried to drink and under a fruit tree that lifted when he tried to eat, gave us tantalise.

“What happened to Gaia?” She’s the Earth. You’re on her body right now.

The Greek mythology family tree is very Habsburg. That explains a lot to be honest.

No this is worse since the Habsburgs never married siblings or parents.

Outstanding - good for you remembering about 'Erebus', the ship, and the Northwest Passage..

He could have mentioned that Athena was born out of Zeus' forehead. Zeus feared that Metis' child would usurp him in the same way he had usurped his father (and his father usurped his grandfather) so he swallowed Metis while she was pregnant. Then, Zeus got a tremendous headache, so painful he had to get someone to split his head open with an axe, whereupon Athena sprang out, already fully armed. The story of Hermaphroditus is interesting as well. He was originally a normal boy, but very handsome, so much so that a nymph called Salmacis fell madly in love with him. She spied on him whle he was bathing, then jumped on him and prayed they would never be separated. Somehow her prayer was answered and they fused together into a being both man and woman. The very best book there is about all this stuff is Ovid's Metamorphoses, an epic poem from ancient Rome full of stories about all these gods, heroes and monsters.

Quite true, McJib, when you comment about mythology that what was imagined then to make sense of the world is still relevant today.

Greek Mythology is a kind of algorithm , an infinite sequence for the purpose of explaining the world. Later , maintaining the same purpose , bypassing supernatural explanations with philosophy and the predominance of logic, they laid the foundations of science. However, Greek mythology remains even today a source of inspiration and imagination and is based in the subconscious of Western civilization.

I'm surprised that he didn't at least mention Helen in passing. She was also a child of Zeus, with Leda, and was the most beautiful woman in the world, whose kidnapping resulted in the Trojan War.

If you want to get into greek mythology, I strongly recommend reading Steven Fry's Mythos book series. The book order is Mythos, Heros, and Troy.

Was just about to post the same. The Audiobook version is narrated by Stephen Fry, and is a fantastic listen.

Old religions are fascinating, and knowing about them adds to lots of things. It’s also interesting to see how different cultures adapted older religions to their own, like how the romans took over the greek gods, and then adapted that to christian saints.

At 7:00 you cannot put it in words but I get it and you are absolutely right. Hellenic (Greek) mythology is not just a fairy tale, much effort and astonishing analysis of the cosmos is fabricated within mythology, it's like the ancients really knew or saw how the universe and the human race came to be scientifically, and they tried to describe it in the Hellenic mythology in their own cryptical unique way. Even Odyssey is a text book of how someone should live his/her life.

It gets really crazy when you realize Zeus is a contender for the biblical god. And the influences the Greeks gods have had on other religions and cultures. Deus a term still used to coin god was what Zeus was called. He was also called the father or father Zeus (or dues pater). And when a Greek king put a statue of Zeus in 700 bc they called him “Baal shamen” which translates to “lord of heaven”

Kratos turning against the gods in the God of War games is very ironic as the mythological Kratos would never do that.

Knowing about greek mythology gives a different angle at understanding the past and present. I think that is what you meant?

Roman mythology is basically a copy-paste of our mythology! When Romans conquered Hellas🇬🇷 they adopted and copied every aspect of our civilisation: Language/alphabet, literature, culture, architecture, mathematics, philosophy, politics, poetry, tragedy, comedy, theatre, religion… etc Romans had a very different pantheon of Gods, the Etruscan Gods. But when they conquered us 🇬🇷 they adopted our Gods and changed their names into Latin ones! So, there ain’t really “Roman mythology” all of their tales are ours with the names changed! Zeus became Jupiter Hera became Juno Poseidon became Neptune Demeter became Ceres Hestia became Vesta Aphrodite became Venus Ares became Mars Hermes became Mercury Athena became Minerva… etc

It's interesting how the English language has changed the emphasis (and spelling) of Greek words, such as with Athena, where we place the stress on the first vowel rather than in Greek the last. Also, with Thessaloniki, where we stress the 'o' whereas in Greek it's the penultimate 'i'. The names of the Greek islands are often quite different to how Greeks say them, such as with Karpathos and Zakynthos. But perhaps you had an entirely other meaning, given the wink. Robert, UK.

"Dont forget we are talking about mythology and theres no corect version of events" This is how to start a video with the wrong foot. And who told this guy that Greek mythology is just fairy tales and not based on real history events, coded or not and even that the gods were not actual persons that excelled in their lives and after millenias received this status?
