Current name for weekdays in Norwegian is: Mandag/Måndag -"Moons day" Tirsdag/Tysdag - "Tyrs day". The god of war in northern mythology. Onsdag - "Odins day" Torsdag - "Thors day" Fredag - "Friggs day" (A note: Often the goddess "Freya/Frøya" is confused with Frigg. Frigg is. Frigg is associated with motherhood. Freya/Frøya is the godess of love. However there is scholary debate if Freya and Frigg once was the same goddess. Lørdag/Laurdag - "Bathing day" (Laugar - wash/bathe) Søndag/Sundag - "Suns day"

Ragnarok. "The twilight of the gods" Etymology of the word is: Ragna - reign. Rulers. Those who rule (I believe this is where the English "reign" stems from) Rok/Røk/Røkr - to grow dark. Twilight. Fun fact - modern Norwegian "røk" means "smoke". I am not sure but I bet this stems from the same word (smoke will make things "go dark"). The event per mythology is how the world as we know it ends. According to the sagas a new world will emerge - with two surviving humans repopulating the new earth. A few gods also survive.

The Gods in the Nordic mythology are a mess; But the oldest three Gods was brothers; It was Oden, Vile and Ve, and they lived in the top of a big tree, Yggdrasil. Vile and Ve made each a figure from the bark of Yggdrasil and Oden blow life into them. Those two become the first human being and was called Ask and Embla. After that Vile and Ve disappeared, and Oden become alone. Oden find his wife among the giants, Frigg, and they got several children that become gods. Oldest and physical strongest was Tor, then Balder, Brage, Tyr, Höder, Vidar, and Saga. But his wife, Frigg, had a brother Njord that has two children, Frej and Freja. Ragnarök was the end of Yggdrasil and the end of that world, from the only two people survive Liv and Lust. You can say that it was end of part one with the creation, and start the next chapter of the world. There are a lot of interesting colourful stories in the Nordic mythology, but a lot of the is written down much later and some invented in the 19:th century. Unfortunately, the stories contain a huge number of names for everything and everyone that are difficult to remember. This was because the stories were intended to be passed on orally. Regarding week names it is one story that Oden find that the day should have names, it become (Swedish in brackets), the week was 4 days. Tyrsd (Tisdag) - for his son Tyr Odensd (Onsdag) - for himself Tord (Torsdag) - for his son Tor, Frejad (Fredag) - for his cousin that was on visit. Another story add the rest when the human (Liv and Lust) find the name of those for day and added one for the sun (Söndag) and one for the moon (Måndag), And they put those in front of the 4 named by Oden. Then the find that the need one more day, lögaredagen (löga is an old Swedish word for washing) and that become the last day Lördag.

Its amazing how much space there is for Women in norse mythology. Women are eveywhere and have real power. A bunch of old ladies decide the fate of Gods and men. Dont get me wrong the culture is Patriarcal it just leaves much more space for women to be complicated and weird.

Ragnarok is told from a Christian perspective. The world dies type of thing. But Ragnarok is just the end of the day. Loki is not actually a Nordic deity. More Christian than Nordic. But when told of Ragnarok, Tyr and Loki team up to fight Ragnarok. Tyr is the god of war, Loki is mischief and subterfuge. They fight the darkness until they die and bring on a new day. Basically it is an allegory of feasting, enjoyment and fighting through the night until the sun comes up. It has nothing really to do with death but destruction of the old and into the new (Hence Thor [pronounced Tor as the H is silent in Icelandic telling of the stories] gives his hammer to the younger children to carry on). Odin is pronounced Wodin/Wodun and Freya as Frigga. Loki is Lo'Ki. There is such a mismatch with Viking style of speech as Icelandic language is more Viking than what some westerners will pronounce it as. Maybe looking at the channel Grimfrost will give you an idea of what Yule is like (pronounced Jul/Jool) and other Viking items and history.

@@Nekotaku_TV It is claimed he is a early Christian rendition to justify the bridge between the North Germanic and Viking pantheon with early Christian ideals. They needed a story and a "God" to fill in a gap between their war like thinking and the more peaceful ideals of early Christian thinking. But then it is a point of debate and it is a bit vague at the best of times.
