Hades was actually one of the most admirable of the major gods (despite the whole kidnapping Persephone thing). He was faithful to his wife (unlike basically everyone), and in most versions of the story Persephone grew to love her new husband. Plus, he actually did his job, tending to the dead and overseeing the underworld. Much better than the other gods who acted like horny jealous teenagers most of the time! :)

7:30 - Yes, the Vestal Virgins were dedicated to the goddess Vesta, who was indeed the Roman equivalent of Hestia.

Yes, Hermes' double snake symbol, called the caduceus, is also a symbol of medicine, as well as of wisdom more generally. There is a tradition of secret, mystical knowledge known as "hermeticism", which is named after Hermes.
@jarls5890
@jarls5890 8 месяцев назад
That is correct. However, the caduceus, is often confused with the Rod of Asclepius - a staff with a single snake around it. Asclepius - a deity associated with medicine and healing.

There are small groups of people in Greece that choose to believe the ancient gods were real and continue to worship them. You’re not far off about Adam & Eve. Most biblical scholars don’t believe the fruit was an apple but rather a pomegranate. If Eden existed it would most likely be in the middle east where you’re much more likely to find pomegranates rather than apples. The Bible doesn’t say what fruit she ate.
@user-fq8rs7rz3i
@user-fq8rs7rz3i 7 месяцев назад
It has nothing to do with eating fruit. It had everything to do with Eve seducing Adam. Afterwards they knew shame and realised they were naked. Eve was told she would suffer in childbirth as punishment. Then they were thrown out of Eden. Poor innocent, blameless Adam suffered all because of wicked Eve. 🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😅😅😅 My arse.
@terryhunt2659
@terryhunt2659 7 месяцев назад
When the Bible was first translated into English, the word "apple" meant any fruit, not specifically the one it means now. Some current Biblical scholars now think that the "early" books of the Bible were written/compiled more recently that most people imagine, during the Babylonian/Persian exile period, and were partially modelled on the older Greek myths (as well as incorporating Mesopotamian ones), which by then were known to neighboring cultures.

I've always liked Greek mythology. I was having a conversation not long ago, on why does nobody worship Greek gods anymore. They are classified under mythology now instead of a religion. I don't see it as being any different to any other religion. I can only assume that it was replaced by Christianity as the main European religion

Few corrections... The Gods are worshiped still today not only by ethnic Greeks but from people around the world. Second Athena didn't just sprung up from his head. Her mother was Metis (she was one of the Oceanids and she was the then wife and consort of Zeus) and according to the myth he swallowed Metis when a prophecy foretold that their child would be greater than it's father thus making Zeus fear for his power. After she was swallowed then few days later he got the said headache which got so bad he asked Hephaestus to split his head open thus giving birth to her and she was born fully developed and clad in full armor too. Persephone didn't eat a pomegranate she ate 6 seeds and that's why she would stay 6 months up the earth and 6 down in the Underworld.

Greek mythology is kinda messed up but you can't deny that every god in greek mythology embody their element exactly.
@donaldb1
@donaldb1 8 месяцев назад
He didn't tell the full story of the birth of Athena. Zeus was with the nymph Metis. But he had received a prophecy that Metis would give birth to a son that would overthrow him, just as he had overthrown Chronos and Chronos had overthrown Ouranos. So Zeus swallowed Metis whole. But she was already pregnant with a daughter, Athena, and it was when Athena was ready to be born that the headaches came.

This might in some way reflect the possibility that Athena was a local deity already worshipped in the area when the ancestral proto-Greeks, Indo-European speakers, migrated there from further north. Certainly the Greeks later incorporated other "non-Greek" Mediterranean-area deities into their myths and worship.

Hermaphroditus's story is pretty crazy. According to Ovid he was an ordinary, if extremely handsome young boy. (If you can call being the son of a couple of deities ordinary.) But the nymph Salmacis fell madly in love with him, spied on him while he was bathing in a pool and jumped on him while praying that they would never be separated. "Some god" (Ovid tells us unhelpfully) heard her prayer and caused them to fuse together into one being, male and female.

It can get complex. Cupid can cause wars by making tne wrong people fall in love. It should be noted Gaia had a number of children including the Gigantes and the other places of the world for example tartarus the fire pit of the underworld, and the monster races. The gigantes, titans and olympians each had equvalent deities.

There are some people who believe in ancient greek religion ,i am one of them. Also i am not sure why the guy said that Apollo is very important, but in reality Aphrodite was the most popular and worshipped goddess alongside Zeus . Aphrodite having the epithet Pandemos "known to everyone " her abilities affect everyone, her powers are needed for life as she is the goddess of fertility, she is also the goddess of war Aphrodite Areia . Also Kronos was overthrown because he didn't let his brothers ,the hecantoncaries and the cyclopses out of Tartarus, because he feared their power . Gaia angered that now her son is disobeying her ,made the plan for his dethroning

So Greek Mythology is pretty old, but draws some elements from Egyptian and Babylonian mythology which comes from Zoroastrianism. The novels by Rick Riodan were written based on greek roman then Egyptian and norse mythology to help his ADHD son, by retelling myths in a .odern setting, the plan was to tell the lesser known characters. The first series was tne Percy Jackson books which they made bad films of.

I am not a Greek scholar in any way, shape or form, but I have read that Greek Society was run entirely for and by men. That men associated only with other men in every way. Men also only debated life's meaning, laws, politics, the Arts etc. with each other until they needed to produce their heirs when they would then 'associate' with a woman. If what I read was true - why are there so many female Goddesses? I wonder if any of the more learned people on this page would be kind enough to let me know if what I read was true.

To describe Ancient Greek Mythology as a bunch of weirdos is both very American and a profound lack of understanding of the roots of European civilisation. These stories of origins demand a deeper understanding of the psychology of human awareness. I'm not surprised at Connors dismissal of the gods as freaks and weirdos, being equally dismissive of abstract art. America is such a prime example of the utter fear of the interior world through the escape mechanism of the literal. It doesn't help that the narrator is a rather lazy one.
