I'm from Spain. Lived in the UK throughout the 90's. Had three weekends in Liverpool. If you ever visit the UK... You MUST go to Liverpool. This clips are very stereotypical, but also based on truth. They will argue (and fight) over the silliest thing, but... In a country where hospitality is exquisite; a foreigner, like you or me, will never feel more at home. Scousers are fucking beautiful people, and you'll feel it as soon as you get there. I love Brits, but I would bring all the Scousers to crash at my flat TODAY.

Joe McGann (Barry, the blonde one ) & Mark Moraghan (Gary, the brown haired guy with the moustache) are from Liverpool. This skit is based on Brookside, a soap opera based in Liverpool from the 1980s & on 2 characters called Barry Grant & Terry Sullivan. This skit spawned catchphrases like “Calm down! Calm down!”.

As a scouser I've always loved the Harry Enfield scouser sketches, a lot of people did have big moustaches, tracksuits and perms in the 1980s which is the joke (have a look at the Liverpool FC team of the early/mid-80s), I don't get offended by it, an easy way to spot an idiot with no wit or originality though is when someone still makes the same jokes as 40 years ago which I can see appearing in the comment section already! edit: The picture on the wall 6:30 is Peter Beardsley, former footballer, Liverpool F.C. legend, he played more for Newcastle United but Liverpool was where he actually won stuff. He did actually also play for Everton though and probably did when this was released hence why the Everton fan is kissing the picture, he was good for them as well.

Another show we used to get in Australia about a family in Liverpool was called “Bread”. It was a cross between a soap opera and a comedy but it gave you some interesting insights into the city and people there in the 1980s. Their team in the 1970’s and 80’s was world famous and internationally they were, and still are widely supported - a bit like the Manchester United team of the 90’s and 00’s. Many people to this day are die hard supporters, including my twin brother. Without having been there, you still do hear a lot of stand up comics and other references being made to how a lot of people there choose to live on welfare. This skit also went there with the unwanted pregnancy and the electricity being cut off. I have seen a lot of people from Liverpool joke about this stuff too and take it on the chin in good jest. I had a soccer coach from Liverpool (with a moustache) introduce me to Chubby Brown, who is probably the filthiest comedian I’ve seen so far.

I'm a Londoner - originally from Essex - and I've met a few Scousers in my time. The stereotype depicted here is kind of true. They are quick to offend, but also quick to forgive and be mates. It's a generalisation, of course, because you could say that about anyone from anywhere in the UK, except perhaps for anyone from Basildon..... Liverpudlians, though, do have a special place in UK culture, both for their humour and also for incidents of tragedy in the national psyche. They have a justifiable rage as well, which I empathise with.

I remember at the time this was hilarious. There was a soap opera called Brookside which had people from Liverpool arguing about trivial things, and this was an extreme send up of it. Two of the actors from it actually made an appearance in later sketches. One thing that makes it funnier is that the two actors with Harry Enfield are really from Liverpool, so not only are they sending up their own background, they're having to do it with Harry taking the piss out of their accent as well. I don't know how well it stands up all these years later, as it's essentially just one joke, but as someone else says in the comments, people still say "calm down, calm down!" over thirty years later, which is an amazing legacy for a silly sketch.

the over arching joke is that Scousers argue all the time over nothing, This is a misunderstanding by others, they shout rather than speak at each other and they over dramatise minor things to seem intense and compete with each other in banter - hence their love of Soccer. the two local Soccer teams are Liverpool and Everton , a district of Liverpool. I shall now simultaneously translate Scouse to American English:- The sister arrived and says as she enters and sits down "The Electricity Company has cut off my supply " then she adds "The Repo Man took away my furniture" both problems caused by non-payment. This was caused by "The Social Benefits Office has stopped my Welfare Checks, I have no money". After an attempt to give her some cash she whines "I don't know what to do, my dog has been arrested for Auto Theft" ie even pets in Liverpool are thieves! then "I am pregnant by the guy next door". Garry says 'I can feel the baby kicking, he will play for Everton Soccer team " and the baby replies "No, I F#k1n will not" meaning he wants to play for Liverpool Soccer team. Garry to baby in argument "What do you know about it" Baby responds counter argument "What do you know about it D1kc #ead" Some of the nuances are glossed!

There was a fashion for men (particularly footballers) to have permed hair and moustaches in the late 1970s early 80s. Tracksuits also became common leisurewear around that time. By the time Harry Enfield filmed these sketches (mid 1990s) those fashions were archaic except, allegedly, in Liverpool so part of the stereotype is that Liverpudlians were behind the times. The other, more obvious stereotype is that Scousers are argumentative and violent. I didn't get to know Liverpool until around the turn of the century when some friends moved there, it didn't strike me as any more dangerous than any other city - even for a soft southern bastard like me - there were pubs which were best to avoid, but you get that anywhere. Maybe I had a lucky escape?

im a Scouser its very stereotypical but its not far accurate, you can still hear alot of these things said. Quick to anger and Quicker to befriend, We dont care who you are or where your from if your decent with us we got your back.
