I was born in 1947 in Prince George BC in the geographical center of British Columbia, Canada. In 1952 the USAF began building a military radar station called Baldy Hughes, one of 26 others on the pine tree line. It was about 19 miles south of the city. I grew up with the US Air Force base personnel being present and recognizable within the community. We loved them and respected them in our community. Our Canadian Forces base had closed after the second world war. In 1957, the two nations joined forces in NORAD, (North American Air Defense Command). In this country and in the USA, we are one. An attack against one is an attack against the other. And we will protect our North American continent.

Please do NOT make light of our contribution to NORAD. It has nothing to do with Transport Canada. That is for Civil Aviation. You make Canada look stupid. You apparently have no idea of tha on-call wings of defense that are in Canada and attached to NORAD for momentary defense. Read up. Research.

? NORAD has failed. Neglect, incompetence, complacent? A slow moving 2ton balloon with solar panels the size of a Passenger jet hanging under it. A guy in Montana had to locate the balloon?!?! ?!? NORAD etc neglecting to spot that platform. Could've had horrible consequences. It doesn't get any worse than that. Amazing! NORAD is a failure at this point?

I spent about 9 years in NORAD as a civilian contractor. I was originally hired to be on the RADAR sites in the Canadian Arctic as a Satellite Communications Specialist for the Long Haul Communications Network (LHCN) that connects the Arctic RADAR sites to North Bay. I then spent about two and a half years working in North Bay in the Network Control Facility inside the ROCC (at that time the Regional Operations Control Center was underground in a similar facility to Cheyenne Mountain). I then spent my last 6 years working in system engineering at the Contract Maintenance Office (CMO) in Ottawa where I oversaw special projects related to Electronic Systems (SATCOM, RADAR, Tactical Radio etc.).

😮Interesting why are they underground?
@obelisk21
@obelisk21 Год назад
@@Sean-JohnAt the time an underground facility offered more security due to it only having two entry points and more importantly it was shielded from a direct attack by 600 feet of granite. They have since moved the facility above ground and it operates out of a building on CFB North Bay. The Heavy Terminal which has the satellite communications facilities would obviously have to be above ground but that was connected to the underground facility by two different fibre optic links that took different paths to get to the underground facility. If you are interested here is a video tour of the facility since it was decommissioned... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NHXDUmaMcOk.html.

To all those who are commenting Canada's equivalent to the FAA is the TSB (Transportation Safety Board (of Canada)) or the NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board, which is American) are wrong. The actual answer is Transport Canada or Transport Canada's Civil Aviation (TCCA). No it is not even NAV Canada as that is a private, not for profit organization. Transport Canada is for enforcement, TSB is for investigation.

NOTAMs tell pilots of aircraft and drones about things like runway lights out, balloon festival in the area so no flying drones Or any other operational situation that would be a hazard to planes, drones or people on the ground. I'm a drone pilot and before every flight I am required to check NAV Canada (like the FAA) for NOTAMs in my area of Canada. Man the flag pattern they have set up at 8:43 is amazingly symbolic and i absolutely love it I love how not only does it represent the Stars and Stripes in the Horizontal, but it in the vertical it represents the Canadian flag its traditionally red maple leaf on white bordered by red bars, in this case being bordered by stars. The blend of both flags in both vertical and horizontal context, representing both nations and blending them to show the unity. Damn man that is a very powerful flag arrangement. Sorry I nerded out a bit on the symbolism. I will now continue the show now. 20:55 Billy Bishop was the Canadian RAF Pilot who was credited with downing the Red Baron. Great vid thanks for sharing just another strong example of our unity. You should do a vid on the Ambasador Bridge Between Windsor and Detroit, busiest bridge in the world, and carries 30% of trade between Canada and US!.

Growing up in Northern Ontario, 5 miles from our town, was a radar base. ( it closed decades ago). When I was volunteering for a political party, we could not go in and canvass the people living there. We either had to telephone canvass it, or did a person on base to do it. It was probably part of the pine tree line, and was located very close to one of the area airports. As I am watching this great video, I am laughing at myself, because I never really questioned why the base was there, it just was. While I knew about NORAD, and what it did, (besides tracking Santa), it never dawned on me that it was integral to continental defence. Stay safe, stay sane, stay strong Ukraine 🇺🇦

@@johnf-americanreacts1287 A pilot will be asked by ATC if they have the most recent notam. If they do not, they can download it to the airplane or the ATC will provide it for them.
