Completely missed that line when he paused it as well 🤦‍♂️😂 definitely if you ever pause mid sentence you need to restart it to get context or a full joke. He has missed a lot like that in this series

The professor is played by Peter Capaldi who played a fantastic role in a UK political comedy called The Thick Of It - you’d love it - full of one liners, insults, cursing and people losing their shit. My favourite ever scene in Peep Show is where Jez says "It's not like I'm going to rape him. I could rape him. I won't rape him." However, that scene is effectively an elaboration of the ancient history joke in this episode, which I also much appreciate, with the same reverse camera move.

The shoe shop girl is Catherine Shepherd - she is in a number of the "I saw you coming" sketches by Harry Enfield, as is Sophie Winkleman (who plays Big Suze in later episodes of Peep Show) - you and The Queen will love them!

Why do all the characters (Mark's extra more pronounced) sound like they've all got lisps/ impediments in every single episode in this series in particular?? Peep show is one of my favourite comedy shows to come out the 90's, so I can hear the voices are not right. If it was on all the other past series/episodes too, then It's certainly intensified by the time we're at this! I can't unhear it, so can't watch any more 😢 . I can't be the only one who's noticed, but perhaps others said so far sooner? It's bizarre AF!! 🤷🏼‍♀️😬🇬🇧

I actually did study Ancient History, before this episode came out. In my fourth year I gave a talk on Simon Schama. To most of my fellow students Schama was just a popularist on TV, just like Mitchell assumes here. But what Capaldi's character is referring to is Schama's reputation among other historians: as a guy who pioneered bizarre deliberately semifictional narratives as a sort of postmodern historiography. It's an approach that has not exactly become mainstream, and my talk was as critical of it as Capaldi's character is here.

"sent hateful and gross things" sounds like someone sent a jar of Marmite. Just on the trying to find British candy thing you might struggle, Hershey's are very much against the import of foreign chocolate to "protect their brand" so you might find the stuff on Amazon is made under license by Hershey's (I know they at least own the rights to Cadbury products and Kit Kat which are both owned by other people outside of the US).
