That drinking/pub flashback is comedy genius. So many jokes crammed into such a short space of time but yet each one given the space to breathe and every single one lands so well. Even the slight call back to the old lady/manny leaving. Dylan Moran's timing and physical comedy side of the role is flawless.

I love Black Books. Yes, as the series progresses, it finds its feet more. In a way, its structured like Father Ted. Also, the guy who loved books so much who then went to the bakery, that's Graham Linehan, the guy who created the show and Father ted too, and IT Crowd.

One of the lesser episodes in my opinion, but still watchable. When you look at this show now its amazing how many soon to be famous actors and comedians had walk on parts. In future episodes look out for Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, David Walliams, Omid Djallili, Nina Conti, Lucy Davis, Rob Brydon, Johnny Vegas, Ricky Grover, Peter Serafinowicz, Martin Freeman.

If you have wondered who the guy who looks like a balding troll is, that's Bill Bailey and you'll be surprised to find these days that he actually looks like...... a balding troll but a bit older. He's hilarious, and funnily enough even though this is probably the first thing I had seen him in, I forgot how much of a straight man he was in this, as in acomedy straight man, compared to Dylan Moran aka Bernard Black. It's weird since he always plays the quirky character usually.

Awful series, even makes Bill Bailey unfunny, there's something about superimposing that american frazier/sienfield type comedy pace/feel over an english show that just jarrs, each to their own tho, if you like it fair play, I was just too spoilt by the quality of tv comedy in the 70s and 80s I guess
