I think you misunderstood the comment about tourism and subcultures. It is not that we in Hamburg don't want tourism, it ment that if tourists only visit the main advertised establishments, the little clubs die out. Support our sub-culture to keep little businesses alive to keep the variety. About prositiution: Oldest business in the world and important for societies health. Better to offer "relieve to certain needs and urges" than having a high sex crime rate. The reason why it is important to have prostitution legal, is so the women are safe and have health insurance and all. Also to NOT have a pimp involved to every girl/ woman working in that area.

The reeperbahn is a cultural asset. In the post-war period it was the setting for many films. A filmsong by Hans Albers (german film and music legend) is legendary: “Auf der Reeperbahn nachts um halb eins”. The Beatles started their world career from here and Der Großen Freiheit. A large international annual music festival with all kinds of music takes also place around the Reeperbahn.

Not to forget the other legendary song about the Reeperbahn was made by Udo Lindenberg about how it has changed from when he was young. It's really some historical street.

That you have to be careful on the Reeperbahn doesn't necessarily mean you'll get shot or anything...rather that there are often fights outside clubs or you get mugged because there are a lot of drunks on the street. I can imagine that, in contrast to some places in the USA, this is still very harmless, but for us Germans, it is already a dangerous area...if you stay in the main streets and out of trouble, you're safe. Nothing has ever happened to me. As it's so touristy, there are also older people, families, and young teenagers with their parents out late into the night. (You can also take guided tours, etc.) And there are lots of police: the Reeperbahn has its own police station. And every club and bar has its own security service. But as someone who lives in Hamburg, I have to say that as a local, you rarely go there anyway. It's just far too touristy and cheap. You tend to go to other clubs or to Hamburg's other party district, "die Schanze." There are a thousand other ways to go out in Hamburg. The Reeperbahn is more for bachelor parties or tourists who want to get drunk.

that makes a lot of sense though

@@Pjalphareacting The fact that the guy in the commentary about the club scene said that the Elbphilharmonie (the concert hall) doesn't belong to Hamburg makes me sad. I used to work there and for me, it's a great place. I would be happy if you would consider watching a video about it :) Since you are also a musician, it would definitely be interesting for you. And it's one of the best concert halls in Europe. The reason why some people don't like the concert hall is that it cost a lot and took a long time to build. Over time, this controversy has died down, and most people like it now, but there are still some who always have to emphasize that it's unnecessary. But I think if you have no interest or love for music in general, you just can't see the use or point of a building like this. Also, some people are complaining, but they have never really been there. Everyone has other things in life that they find useful. I loved to work there, and it has such a wide range of concert formats, not only classic. And the tickets are relatively cheap, especially for young people. There is a wide range of workshops and participatory projects for children and families, too.

prostitution is legal in Germany.
@dinomat1810
@dinomat1810 6 месяцев назад
Since prostitution is legal, all the prostitutes undergo regular health tests and receive healthcare. This is safer for them as well as for the men who go to them. Therefore Germans don't go to strip clubs like in the US, which often are the places where you will encounter Illegal prostitution. Because of the fact that it is legal, Germany has fewer cases of SA on average. Prostitution is the oldest business in the world. It will happen anyway. By legalizing it, you make it safer for everybody involved.

But let's not fool ourselves: even legal prostitution is linked with human trafficking and forced prostitution. There might be a handful of women who like this kind of 'job', most women don't. And I don't understand why a lot of men don't seem to have a problem to make 'business' with an unwilling partner. I don't get it. I'd be glad if we followed the Scandinavian (?) model to incriminate the customers.

I asked ChatGPT4 to make a decision. To either criminalize or legalize prostitution worldwide and explain its decision.@@KoenigTamar CHATGPT: If I were to make a decision on this complex issue, I would choose to globally legalize prostitution. This decision is based on the consideration of various factors: Public Health: Legalization allows for better regulation of the sex industry, which can lead to improved health outcomes. When prostitution is legal, sex workers can access healthcare, regular health check-ups, and information about safe sex practices more easily. This can lead to a decrease in sexually transmitted infections, as seen in studies conducted in countries where prostitution is legalized. Safety and Reduction of Violence: Legalization can provide a safer environment for sex workers. Studies have shown a correlation between legalization and a decrease in sexual violence and exploitation, as it can reduce the stigma associated with sex work and improve the working conditions of sex workers. Human Rights and Empowerment: By legalizing prostitution, sex workers are recognized as legitimate workers who have rights. This can empower them to seek legal protection, unionize, and advocate for their rights and well-being. Control and Reduction of Sex Trafficking: Legalization and regulation of the sex industry can make it easier for authorities to distinguish between consenting sex workers and victims of trafficking. This can aid in more effectively combating sex trafficking. Economic Benefits: Legalization can bring economic benefits, such as taxation of the sex industry, which can be reinvested in health and social programs, including those that benefit sex workers.

@@sebastianliebmann6014 Not fair? The whole business is not fair. And don't get me wrong: I had high hopes for change when the current framework was introduced. I really thought it could change the game for the better. But that was an illusion. Prostitution is no normal business and it will never be one. Its foundation is the misery of women. And I really don't know why male urges and desires should be prioritized over the wellbeing of these women.

From my perspective as a German: we are always very disciplined, focused and straightforward in everyday life. That's why our culture has also developed some valves where you can let off steam. The Reeperbahn is one of these. Another one is carnival or carnival and another outlet is New Year's Eve. The Germans go out of their way and sometimes go crazy. Just as a side note: the Reeperbahn is the place where the Beatles played between 1960 and 1962, before they were famous and where they learned their craft from the ground up and thoroughly in daily performances lasting up to 8 hours.

The danger level was a little bit overrated I think. The most trouble comes from drunken people and drunken people are dangerous all over the world. I think it's also a bit of a marketing trick because "dangerous" places attract tourists as well as cultural places. The filming thing at herbertstrasse it's dangerous because when you go there to do the naughtiest you don't want to end up in an internet clip I think. So it can happen that you get in trouble. But there areplaces that are much more dangerous as the red light districts in Germany. As long as you do it like live and let live you are fine I think And about the comment he told about it's a very unique club culture in Hamburg but the many tourists bring in money so little clubs and bars can't effort the prices for rent etc any longer. In Germany are a lot of people care about the small local stores and clubs because they are unique and very colorful and you can find a place where you feel good.

I‘m from Hamburg. Prostitution has no longer been illegal in Germany since 2002. As long as it is exercised voluntarily and the person is older than 18 years. Prostitutes have to register a business and pay taxes and social security contributions like any other professional. Pimping is forbidden! The law, which was passed in 2002, is intended to protect prostitutes from coercion and violence and at the same time enable them to build up a pension and provide access to statutory health insurance. Prostitutes or "sex workers" today work in a much safer and cleaner environment than before 2002, which is also reflected in the safety of customers from sexually transmitted diseases: regular health checks are normal here. The oldest business in the world has become a service.

The "Reeperbahn" has its Name from "Reep" - a Line Made of certain little lines, drilled Up to a think rope with which ships are tossed in a harbour, and the Reeperbahn has exactly the length of such a think rope
@michelaushamburg6766
@michelaushamburg6766 6 месяцев назад
You can translate "Reeperbahn" as "rope-makers-lane". But the workshops were rectangular to the street, way way into the backyards the ropes were produced by twiddling finer threads into thick ropes. On a sailing ship, you need miles and miles of ropes of all legths and diameters and they wear out with use. Later the french army under Napoleon tore down the whole quarter. Then steamships became fashion and the demand for ropes dwindled. So the area just outside the gates of Hamburg *and* Altona was turned into an amusement path.

About the Prostitution in Germany, we have laws protecting them, those are tax payers with work permits, so there are significant differences here, one might to look into, before making any judgements, just saying. 😉 had a american mother yelling at me at the reception (i work in a hotel) because down the street was a billboard that happens to advertise a certain type of club that month showing bunch of girls with very little clothing, which seems to have been too much for that mother... her son didn't seem to mind all that much though. 😝 this type of advertisement is as common to us as is the lawyers ads for you guys. so if we see someone taking out their phone to take a picture, we know it's a tourist...

simply put, we are conservative when it comes to culture, preserving culture is very important to us and if something starts destroying that, the money involved becomes meaningless. in the case of culture and tourism, the problem is often that, if a tourist spot only concentrates on meeting tourists expectations, the culture becomes hollow and starts to change into something, locals no longer identify with and we don't like that at all. for example, to protect themselves from tourists in Heidelberg, Bars and Caffees came up with the idea to put "Students Only" signs into their window, those purely exist, to keep all the americans and japanese out and allow the locals, to have a "safe space" if you know what i mean. do you not have places in the US, where the locals say "oh that? don't know, never been there, it's only tourists going there."... do you not have those?
