He just did a 136 lap which means his AVERAGE speed during the lap was 136.35mph! and he hit a 202mph top speed. As the legendary Joey Dunlop once said "There is a grey blur, and a green blur. I try to stay on the grey one." These guys are superhuman.

There's another great video like this called Nurburgring Formel-Fahrzeug auf nasser Nordschleife. It shows Andreas Gulden driving a car maybe an F-1 car at full speed in the rain on a wet track at Nurburgring. It is a helmet cam so you can see the same view as Andreas. He will text them questions about where they are on the course making sure they know the route. Iom is a weird micro climate on the same day you can have sun rain hail and snow on the same island. Years ago they did morning practice and they would line up in the dark as as the sun comes up start racing. It's even more amazing when you remember this isn't even race speed - he's not pushing it that hard. He's having fun and showing off for some of the spectators at the same time (hence some of the wheelies). Come race time you're going even faster, taking every corner even tighter, and there's others on the track with you that you're competing with that might be very close to you (even despite the 10 second gap between bikes from the start, they often catch up with each other). So this video footage isn't even fully what he'd be experiencing during an actual race. Pure amazing insanity on two wheels! Fastest lap I believe is Peter Hickman who covered the 37.73 miles in 16 minutes 42 seconds for an average of 135.4 miles per hour. The course has over 200 corners and takes several years to learn properly. Some riders have hit animals, there is a famous picture of a seagull interaction, and even the flies are a problem at that speed. There are other races on the island throughout the year, but if you want to attend the TT you typically need to book over a year in advance.

You are right, there is always the rare possibility for animals or birds to get onto the course. Back in the 1950's, a cow freaked out in a field alongside the course near Glen Helen and got onto the course just as John Surtees approached during an early morning practice session. Neither were hurt luckily, though John S came off his machine. I recall the headline in the local newspaper that weekend which read 'TT tested cow' (In those days, bottled milk was labelled as certified TT, meaning tuberculine tested). The cow was called Betty.

They will tell you within six inches the best line on any part of the circuit, whether they go over a manhole cover or bump or whatever feature or slightly to the left or right, and at 180mph, any imperfections (and they are street roads) must feel like being shot by a cannon. That’s a good point about animals in the road. I live near the Welsh border with similar hill terrain and sheep are let to run loose. Generally they know to stay out of the way, but at those speeds if one of them was crossing the road, that surely would be it. Same if you hit a bird (low flying pheasants are also common around here.) You can mitigate the risks but you can’t eliminate them.

Remember seeing Joey racing at the Skerries 100. I was walking through the pits area, part field with bikes, part country fair. He was just working on his bike with a mate. A little later I was a few people behind him while he was queueing to buy a cup of tea at a drinks van. I was thinking this guy is a legend of racing, and he just is waiting his turn to buy a cup of tea. 😊 It's an amazing community of road racers.

Steve, watch Milky Quale narrating a lap of the course, he now teaches newcomers on every bend, bump and dip of the course... They say it takes 4yrs to learn this course... These guys have balls of steel! His knee will be down on the tightest of corners (even though he's not going full race speed here) and yes he is literally brushing walls (Milky took one too early and hit his shoulder resulting in a horrific crash, there are fatalities every year) The 2023 TT just ended 2 days ago and Pete just broke the all time lap record on a Superstock bike (pretty much exactly what you could but from the showroom) watch the "Seniors TT race" the last race of the event on race prepared 1000cc monsters.. I ride bikes, but couldn't think about trying this, these guys are cut from a completely different cloth. (RIP to all those riders who passed) If you go, time your visit and take a tent, cos the hotels and B&Bs are booked up years in advance for TT fortnight.. You'll love it and the atmosphere is electric!!
