I feel it's worth mentioning that some of these were limited-time/temporary promotional items. The faces on the tic tacs were temporary, for example. And the miniature food items from Coles. That's a limited-time promotion they run sometimes. For every $30 you spend during that time period, you get a mini plastic toy of a food item they sell. Complete with brand name and all. I keep mine lined up in my kitchen window.

The tree in the Daintree @8:20 is a "Strangler Fig" Technically it is not a tree, but a vine. The vine grows up around a tree, which it then kills by stealing nutrients / sunlight. The dead tree then rots away leaving the vine standing on it's own. Result, what you see in the picture.
@JamesSamson487
@JamesSamson487 2 года назад
Also a fun fact: The Strangler Fig was the inspiration behind Home Tree from James Cameron's Avatar. Apparently, he saw the tree/vine, went inside of it (which you can do with ease, depending on how old it is) and loved the design of it.

Back then all cans were to be crushed before taking them to be weighed to earn your money. These days, all cans must be not crushed. 10:04 South Australia has had Recycling Centres that honour the container deposit scheme, It was started back in the mid to late 70's In Adelaide by a man named Alby Rawlings Who owned Daws Road Recycling Centre, His son Nev is now at the helm.Now there's over a hundred yards and many businesses in SA serving the Adelaide community in its recycling needs. The incentive is good for the consumer, the environment, and for the economy here. and the other states have gotten onboard in recent years.The Auto sort tech you see has only come in to Australia in the last 5-10 years. It used to be a 5c deposit, but after legal battles with coke Recyclers SA won and it went up to 10c. That was ages ago now, Its a multi - tier industry with multiple specialised recyclers. And there are towns in Australia (eg, Stanthorpe, Queensland) that actually get a lot of hail due to the high amount of granite rock in the area. Granite attracts lightening. Crops around Stanthorpe all have hail-netting over the entire crops to protect them due to the consistent hailstorms. A while back l was watching YT video of a guy prospecting for gold in Arizona or Nevada(one of those dry states anyway) and he was in an area called Coolgardie. Now Coolgardie is an indigenous Australian word(roughly translate to waterhole) and also a town in Western Australia which in the late 1800's experienced a gold rush and still does produce gold commercially today. I'm wondering how that uniquely Australian name ended up in the US. Perhaps an American chanced his luck in Australia and brought the name back with him or perhaps an Australian did the opposite and tried his luck in the US? Who knows. Another interesting connection between Australia and Western Australia in particular is that the 31st president of the USA,Herbert Hoover,before he became president,managed a goldmine in Leonora in the late 1800's for British mining company. He had a house built for him(which still stands today) and is the only US president' s house that exists outside the US. Info for you next pub quiz night.

Quick story from Sydney, 1998. i was in the tiny backyard of the terrace house I lived in in Darlinghurst, and I heard the strangest noise coming from the South. It grew in volume, and I honestly wondered if it was a spaceship, as it was unlike anything I'd ever heard before, it was loud, pulsing, and it was getting closer. Then the hailstones hit and I stepped inside. They were large, some the size of tennis balls, and the sound I heard was them hitting tin roofs as they drew nearer. I went out the front to see what was happening in the street, saw the back window of a hatchback get smashed in. Someone was walking with an umbrella, and I yelled at them to get under cover. They ducked under someone's front veranda. 1 billion dollars in damages that night. Many houses in my street had tarps over the roofs to stop water coming in, mine too. Nature sure gave us a reminder what she was capable of that night.

Huntsman can grow to the size of a regular dinner plate once you get about 100km from the coast. While they are not poisoness thet are capable of causing injuries. People have been know to jump out of their cars while the car is still moving and heart attacks. A lot of different Olympic records get broken when Huntsman's scare the crap out of people. While spiked hail doesn't happen often, hail the size of golf balls up to and including softball size happen all the time. In South Australia we have had places called bottle O's (not to be confused with a place to purchase alcohol) where you recycle bottles/cans/milk cartons and recieve money. The criss-cross tree roots is a strangler fig. Birds drop seeds in a niche in the tree, it grows and sends roots down to the ground, eventually strangling the original tree, leaving the hollow inside the roots as seen in the photo. 😀
@philbox4566
@philbox4566 2 года назад
8:18 is a Strangler Fig in the rain forest. You can actually climb up inside them. These trees are seeded in the upper branches of a rain forest giant and then they send their aerial roots down the trunk to the ground. They eventually encircle the host tree and kill it. The host then rots out and leaves a pipe. The pipe can be over 30 metres in height. You climb all the way up inside it then poke yourself out of a hole and on to the upper branches where all the orchids and epiphytes live. Fun times.

The BBQ beehive probably came about when the owners went away for an extended holiday. When bees swarm, they will look for anything that is convenient for them. The weather rock is a bit of dry Aussie humour. The original Perth IS in Scotland, the one in OZ is named after it.The weird house is a semi-detached house where on owner has done up extension and painted their half a different colour. Wolf spiders are NOT dangerous but their bite can be painful, mainly because they have big fangs. In their natural habitat, usually gardens, they difficult to see. When a speed sign is posted like that, usually there is camera there as well. Huntsman spiders are HUGE, but harmless. Pretty well every year we have a season with hail, but hailstones THAT size are unusual. Hail starts out as rain and as it descends it gets frozen, then it can travel through a layer of rain where they grow and get re-frozen. This can happen a number of times as they descend and the big stones are where a number of stones have joined together like the one in the image.

Very long outback highways have designated sections along the route as emergency air strips for use by the flying doctor service. So you’re not allowed to stop on these sections even beside the road so it’s always available if a plane needs to land. Usually police will block road at each end so the plane can land, but they don’t want a stray vehicle to be stopped in the middle. So if a road ambulance has picked up a patient who needs evac they meet at the nearest one of these with the flying doctor service air ambulance. I read somewhere a while back that they are being updated with traffic lights at each end which the air ambulance can trigger on approach to stop traffic without the help of police on the ground. The whole of outback Australia is reliant on the royal flying doctor service they are absolutely an essential service. Most large properties, farms out there have two airstrips on the property. One well maintained dirt strip for the flying doctor, and a rougher less maintained one for the postal service planes which fly in once or twice a week. A great experience for you would be the mail run from say broken hill which takes passengers for day trips to help fund it, delivering mail to the remote cattle stations. I did it as a kid so was the nominated one to jump out of the plane at each stop and take the mail to their mailbox, which was usually an old refrigerator at one end of the strip. Amazing experience.
