Hey Squirrel my friend, Carry On’s are truly a British institution and your education has now progressed enough now to understand the humour, the packed full of innuendos galore. I don’t believe anyone from the states had reached to them before, you’ll be introduced to so many comedy legends, my personal favourite was CARRY ON CLEO, I look for to you reactions. Not all were great but we’re here to point out the great ones for you. Respect to you for doing a fantastic job showing respect to our comedy icons.

Jon Pertwee (Rep, Navy Lark, later Wurzel Gummage) was probably the best Dr Who, with the storylines mostly being confined to Earth (BBC Budget Cuts - but at least they got it in Colour). Me and My Girl various re-runs on the London stage included having Wolfie Smith as the lead character which was the show I saw. Barnum in the UK was I think Michael Crawford - in ways a sort of similar kind of showbiz history between them.

I didn't know he had done so much. King Arthur and The Spaceman, we went to Alnwick Castle when that was filmed, I don't remember it too well, everyone was excited because Jim Dale was there. Its a shame his marriage failed. Take every opportunity, good advice

comedians at the start included Max Miller and Tommy Trinder. The playing of Spike Milligan in the film didnt seem how I would have imagined it, but it is done in a way that a young called up person would react. For his own National Service lucky not to get sent to places where nuke bomb tests were being carried out

I've always loved Jim Dale. I don't recall any bad word against him. I always felt he was so charismatic.

Well I knew Jim as a comic actor. Most brits do, but I didn't know his pop career, his Harry Potter narration, a lot of his theatre work. Always played good guys on screen. Think they did about 30 Carry on films. All on a different theme. First one was called Carry on Sargent, about army recruits, it was a comedy. The title was a common military phrase. A producer was watching a war film shortly after the Carry on release, and when the phrase was used the whole cinema erupted in laughter. He clocked the popularity of the format, and away it went. With the passing of years they were thought to be dated, humour changed and the ideas were getting thin. Early on though, the series were a knockout. I think Saucy sums them up.

Jim Dale is pretty much one of the last of that generation of stars from through the golden era who unlike so many of today, were multi talented not just a superb actor, but actor singer - screen, theatre....narrator. He could do it all, 1 of the greats still thankfully with us.

The Carry On movies consisted of almost always the same cast, in two types of comedy film, the modern type (Hospital, Army, Business of some kind) or a historical setting such as the Wild West, Ancient Egypt or the Court of Henry VIII to give a few examples of the 31 films made.

Carry on Jack is one of my favourite Carry On's because it has the majority of the stars from back in the day in it. It also has Juliet Mills as the female lead and back in the day I had a MAJOR crush on her (still do to be honest)....

You need to watch the Carry On Films, Squirrel ! Great slapstick humour. You cannot consider yourself educated in British humour to you do. Then try The Goodies. Best British comedy and caused a chap to die laughing. Only comedy that was asked to turn it down.

@TheRealSquirrel. That will be me, Tony. There is a documentary on RU-vid under the title Died Laughing Alex Mitchell The Goodies 1975. The Goodies got a letter from his widow saying thanks for the pleasure you gave my late husband. Wow. The Goodies were counterparts to Monty Python and they met at Cambridge University together. The Goodies, for those of us old enough to remember them, have a large cult fan base. Very witty. Constant ad-libbing. Razor sharp wit. RU-vid has a three minutes sketch of one of the Goodies, the late great, Tim Brooke-Taylor, opening sequence to Saturday Night Grease. If you have ever struggled getting in a pair of tight jeans, you will resonant with the humour. The running gag of that episode, was the jeans were so tight, Tim can only speak in his normal male voice with his trouser flies undone. Yep ! Hilarity ensures, as he tried to chat up women. Squeaking girls voice or male voice with his flies unzipped. Tough choice !!!!😉

The Parlophone Record label was becoming a bit of a desparate one, having Jimmy Shand as the biggest seller, and george martin tended to get the comedy acts - Charlie Drake for example. Getting some "rock" names (they did have others) to compete inter house at EMI with Columbia and the other labels was George's idea (vs Norrie Paramor at Columbia) . Dika-Dum-Dum was a "hit" on Decca for Des O'Connor.

If you check out the Carry On series I’d suggest starting with Carry On Cleo, Carry on Screaming or Carry On Don’t Lose Your Head. Most of the Carry Ons are funny but I’d say those three are good for Jim Dale and then the Carry On Doctor and Again Doctor films. I think you’ve already watched the Plank (1967 version).

@@TheRealSquirrel the very first Carry On movie was Carry On Sergeant. The eponymous sergeant was played by William Hartnell, the very first Doctor in Doctor Who. The last was Carry on Columbus, a belated entry. By that time most of the originals were no longer with us. As you saw, Jim Dale starred as Columbus. Interestingly it also featured Jon Pertwee, the third Doctor who you also saw in this video. It was a bit of a disaster. Pertwee was less than complimentary about both it and his own performance in it! (His son's Sean Pertwee by the way, who's starred in the likes of Event Horizon, Equilibrium and Gotham.) Personally I'd recommend starting with Carry On Sergeant. It's less bawdy than later entries but is a delightful feelgood movie and features a number of the actors who would become series regulars although the lead in it is the legendary comedian and game show host Bob Monkhouse.

The first carry on film was Carry On Sergeant, a one off but was so successfull they carried on making them. No punn intended. A suggestive onuendo saucy type of film, very funny in the day without the smut and crudeness.

If I heard right I'm not sure Jim was correct when he said he was one of the last to do National Service when he said a few weeks later it ended. My dad was over a year younger than Jim and he had to do National Service and was sent to Europe. The only time he ever went 'abroad' bless you dad. Carry On Screaming and Carry On Doctor are just two of the films Jim Dale did.
