Just some more info: Ground dimensions Australian rules football grounds, even at the highest level of the game, have no fixed dimensions. For senior football, the playing field is an oval, typically between 135-185 metres (148-202 yd) long goal-to-goal and 110-155 metres (120-170 yd) wide wing-to-wing. Being from New South Wales which historically has not played AFL (it originated in Victoria), I went to my first AFL game about 5 years ago, expecting to be a bit bored as the games are pretty long. Holy crap. Most of the players seem to be over 6', they are all super strong and fit. Each one of them is basically a superstar, the game is incredible to watch, high-scoring, it doesn't stop even if someone is injured, it's insane. It may just be the most amazing team sport on the planet.

Just so you get an idea of the time... it's up to an additional 10 minutes per quarter. So upto 120 minutes for a complete game. Some players run up to 18Km (about 11 miles) per game. Bouncing the ball is a complete skill on it's own. Carlton (my team) recruited an Irish Gaelic football player... his first bounce in football went back over his head. As they said in the video, AFL players range between 5'6" tall and 6' 11" tall (Aaron Sandilands retired a couple of years back so there are no 7 footers in the AFL now). What they don't mention is the weights. The lightest player is only 64kg (141 lbs) while the heaviest is 114kg (251 lbs) and the little guys are not afraid of going in to tackle the big fellas. If you want to watch the intense, exciting full contact sport in the world... played without padding... welcome to the AFL. A sport now played in 32 countries around the world with around 35,000 people playing it.

This is very misleading. The Rugby School had written rules prior to 1845 when they were published in newspaper. These rules made the first reference to the 'mark.' The rules of the Cambridge Game were published in newspapers in 1848 to get working class people interested in sport. Both these games were played with the 'Rugby Ball' the grand daddy of the Sherrin. Fact is, if it is played with oval shaped ball it came from Rugby.

Very intelligent commentary for your first time viewing the sport! Bouncing the ball if you run with it is required every 15 metres - Americanised to 16 yards for this vid - and is a little like the "travel" rule in basketball. Also if you're legitimately tackled while in possession and you've had a prior opportunity to pass it or kick it, you'll be penalised "holding the ball" and a free kick awarded to the opposition (the exception is when you "mark" the ball, ie, catch it on the full from someone's kick). So the game moves fast with kicks and handpasses. It's a great spectator sport! You'll soon learn Collingwood is the team everybody else loves to hate, but whose fans are hyper-passionate - not sure what the NFL equivalent is.
@IWrocker

Thank you! And Great information, the video left out some good bits of techniques and rules I'm seeing from comments, you explained it nicely. AFL is also derived from the game ‘marngrook’ that was the game played by indigenous Australians. AFL or Australian Rules was developed by students at a prestigious Melbourne boys college who they think spent time playing marngrook with the indigenous population, it was played as a way to keep fit during the cricket off season and I believe the first games went for days ! Victoria is the home of aussie rules though it is big in other states, the NT, ACT and Tas don’t have teams in the National completion.

G'day champ glad to see we have international viewers starting to get into our game, it doesn't get the credit it deserves outside of Australia probably as it's only played here except for some small leagues in some countries but that's why it's called Aussie rules. The grounds are huge on avg 170mt x 100mt with midfielders covering 16km's on avg at an avg sprint of 20-30km p/hr. Majority of players kick the ball 50mtr in the air some 60mt,love watching speckies or high marks with guys standing on the heads of someone who is say 185cm tall doing it in a leap without the hands interfering with the opposition a cpl who do it regularly are Liam Ryan (West Coast Eagles)& a Collingwood player who's name escapes me sorry. The easiest way to get the game is to watch it the rules can confuse even the ardent supporters like myself mainly because of the speed the game is played at. I could go on but I won't oh yeah the grand final crowd is closer to 100000 people than 90000 an example of crowd numbers is West Coast Eagles there home ground is Optus oval capacity 60000 we avg about 58000 per game and have 101000 fully paid members with the most famous is probably Collingwood A good game to watch would be 2018 grand final btwn West Coast Eagles & Collingwood who have a young American on the list Mason Cox. We love it it's crazy and it's our game- tough, physical, fast passed and spectacular. Pls enjoy it Regards Brett a proud aussie

Love your format Ian, you didn't succumb to the normal "me the watcher in big box, action in little box" EgoTube format for this type of video. And I enjoyed your video as well - keep them coming. Remember if the announcer says "he kicked a behind", this is referring to "booting a minor" or "scoring a point instead of a 6-point goal". It's not referring to the team captain chastising a poorly-performing player.

I’m biased because I grew up playing and watching AFL, but the thing that I like most about it is the freedom of movement you have in the game. No offside rule, plenty of space and the ability to pass the ball forwards, sideways and backwards allows for a freedom of movement not often replicated in many sports.

Hey, I'd love to see your reaction to some of the best marks/best goals compilations. Please do a video on that if/when you can. Like the "Marks of the Year" or "Goals of the Year" from 2001-2019. Great stuff ^^ Edit: I see you did that!! Awesome!!! Watching it now ^^

Aussie rules was invented in the 1850's . The Melbourne Demons were founded in 1858 and are the oldest football club in the world . .. They are also on the top of the ladder with 12 wins and only 2 losses.

The ground is so big because AFL grounds are also cricket grounds, The MCG where the grand final is played the letters stand for Melbourne Cricket Ground. The game was started so cricket players could stay in shape during cricket off season.

Something else unique to AFL is the father/son rule. If a player appears in at least 100 games for a team, if and when his son plays and nominates for the AFL draft then the team his father played for has dibs on him. If they pass on him, any of the other clubs can select him.

What I love about AFL is that you'll see up to four generations in one family at the game. Babies through to grandparents.

Check out this game from a few weeks ago. (I'm a Cats supporter and I was 'noisy' in my house!) 13 lead changes in the game. Scores level or a kick the difference at the 1/4 and half time breaks. Keep your eye on the time and score in the bottom left....

If you want to watch the AFL Grand Final it is on Saturday 25 September @ approximately 5:15am New York time. Because of Covid the match will be played at Optus Stadium in Perth, Western Australia, rather than the Melbourne Cricket Ground which is the traditional ground for the Grand Final. The match is going to be played between Melbourne (which is thought to be one of the oldest football clubs of any code) and Western Bulldogs, both Victorian teams.

Greatest game on earth Try Dusty martin highlights for a current superstar. Then best marks and best goals. Game has been played since the 1860s, midfielders run over 10miles per game. It's a fast flowing game that rewards effort and commitment. It's a great game to watch with your friends over a BBQ and beers

AFL Fields use cricket fields in the winter. They are generally around 135 to 185 meters long by 110 to 155 meters wide (1094 to 202 yards long by 120 to 508 yards wide). The ball bounces quite easily but if it’s wet or the ground is ruined it’s almost impossible to bounce. There are a few more rules like incorrect disposal is a free kick to the other team and getting tackled with the ball without trying to get rid of it is as well (holding ball)

Oh - and those "spectacular catches" are colloquially called "a speckie" - and that carries on into normal Aussie languange. E.g. "Did you see that stack at Bathurst?" "Yeah mate pretty speccy". There's also a very well known song from the 70s or maybe early 80s about footy called "Up there Cazaly". Cazaly was a player who was master of the speccy mark. You can find that song here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pxM8XB61ZvU.html That song was almost like a national anthem in the Aussie rules states when I was a kid.

I go for the Melbourne Demons who were the first team established in 1858! And we have not won a Premiership since 1964 and we're on top of the Ladder this season, so its looking positive! ❤💙

The first Aussie rules game was played in the 1850's between Melbourne grammar school and scots college in Melbourne. The game was based on an aboriginal game called "marngrook" (ball game) in which the players would kick the ball high into the air and leap to retrieve it. The ball was oval shaped and usually made from possum hide.

The burrito of rules produces a game that is in constant flow. The ground is so large because it's played (in Winter) on cricket grounds that get used for cricket in Summer.

Your NFL is amazing to watch and is made for TV. Got to go to my first game live when I visited your country 2 years ago. When you are there at a game the whole experience of the cheerleaders and marching bands etc is very entertaining, however the game itself is very stop/start with a lot of down time. This is quite different to Aussie rules (AFL) where the only breaks are the 30 seconds after a goal is scored!! This is a game best seen live as there is a lot happening off the ball, like a game of high speed chess! Also the oldest codified sport in the world!! not bad for a little country down the bottom of the world!! Another interesting fact was that is was originally played in an area of parkland/bushland with trees !!

You can get the ball across the oval in 3-5 kicks, its amazing how small that oval can become when played at the highest level.
