As an American and a lifelong player/fan of hockey, this had enough of an impact on me when it happened that I wrote the Leafs organization a long email telling them how much it meant! Another story that will warm your heart. In 2007, the Edmonton Oilers were playing one of the California teams in the playoffs. The home crowd fans BOOED loudly during the singing of Oh Canada, drowning out the singer. The team and city residents were HORRIFIED. Anyway, the next game was in Edmonton. Everyone was a bit nervous about what the fans would do. The fans there in Edmonton sang the Star Spangled Banner so loud that they drowned out the singer. And did so every game afterwords. It was just so touching, so emotional, to see them do this instead of the opposite. Oh yeah... Edmonton won the series too! Karma? 😊

This is a great video John - almost a love letter between the two countries. My three favourite anthem live experiences: 1. The Leafs game you played 2. At a Grammy party in LA, an American artist started belting out oh Canada acapella. 3. In 1981, in Chicago when the Black Hawks played the Maple Leafs. It was the first game played after the Canadian involvement in the Iranian hostage crisis. The crowd was thunderous and ended with “Thank you Canada” chants. Unreal. I learned that night what it meant to be a Canadian and American. I’m not American but I felt the emotion being poured out to Canada.

Hi, American here … I’m not surprised in the slightest that our Canadian brothers & sisters were willing & able to help finish our national anthem when the mic cut out. Canada is & always has been the best neighbor & friend any country could ask for, & I personally have always been grateful to Canadians for support, friendship, & generosity of spirit! In fact, ever since Trump happened to our country, I have been bowled over by the support not just from Canada (to whom I’d also like to apologize for any of the crazy that’s unfortunately spilled over into your country), but from countries all over the world - far too many to remember all at once! It’s been overwhelming & so unbelievably heartening to hear from people in SO MANY different countries, expressing their love & support for our wellbeing as a nation, & their hope for not just a return to normalcy, but also a brighter future. I’ve also seen videos of people from all different countries listening to our national anthem, & actually tearing up while listening to its lyrics! Those videos are incredibly moving, to say the least. Anyway, thank you again & please know that your love & support is very much appreciated! ❤️

How did Trump get brought into this? Stop trying to divide when this is clearly a bonding between two countries through sport. You're the perfect example of who the political terrorist elite love to have on their side. Uneducated, moronic people who spout crap like this. Be ashamed of yourself, because you should. The other side with Biden has everything under control, right?

I am so happy that you said, "In all they sons command". They changed those lyrics a few years ago and we miss it the way it was. It is great to see the respect from the hockey fans for each other's anthem. Wish we could see that respect on a more regular basis.

The current version - which was actually closer to the original English lyrics - has grown on me somewhat, and sometimes I'll sing it, but I'll generally sing it the way it had been for the first 40+ years of my life, and I won't apologize for that - I've always felt that like 'mankind' being a catch-all for all humanity, the 'sons' part referred both to sons and daughters. Both versions are fine, and I won't fault anyone for singing it the way they prefer to, especially if they are older and recall different lyrics.

That was beautiful! When all is said and done, there is more that brings Americans and Canadians together than divides us!! (Hockey is a enduring part of that lol!) We fought on the same side in all the major wars of history, and we have similar views on freedom and law and order. Thank you sir for bringing out such stellar incidents and showing them the respect they deserve.

We Canadians have always had USA's back! My friend served in Afghanistan as a Canadian soldier and he told me when he was first deployed shortly after 911 they were off loading a huge cargo carrier and a US Army ranger actually asked him who are you guys? He looked at him and said we're Canadians! Just then the coyotes started backing down the ramp and the ranger actually teared up when he noticed every one of our military vehicles had I❤NY stickers on them !

Thank you, John, for giving this exposure, and so good to see and read the positive comments back and forth! As an immigrant to Canada (38 years ago), I have been amazed at the synergy there is between Canada and the US. So many similarities (that are taken for granted, really!), e.g. language, habits and customs, rules + signage (eg traffic, but also in all kinds of industry), ethics, etc. etc. Canadians go to the US all the time and feel completely at ease. There are no 2 countries in the world that are so compatible as the US and Canada. This is something to really celebrate and be thankful for. Personally I have a lot of very good friends in the US, done a lot of business there and always love visiting the US. One line in the Canadian anthem is "God keep our land", indeed may He keep our land and the US as well! Blessings, all!

The Star Spangled Banner is an inspiring rebellion anthem recounting the Battle of Baltimore as the British sieged. I’m sure Canadians like myself have loved hearing it, especially at sporting events, and on the day of a different siege on Baltimore, happy to recount how Canadians proudly bellowed it out in solidarity with our southern brethren!

Hello John from the REAL CENTRE OF CANADA, MANITOBA. Thank you for sharing your heart for your Canadian Cousens. From one sentimental soul to another, I truly thank you. You held your heart during the singing of the Canadian Anthem. Wow!! Tears man!!! BTW a big shout out to the Detroit Redwing Fans for a great job of our national Anthem. John, our freedoms are under attack, here in Canada and the US. Our Nations Anthems were composed to represent our beliefs of a free people, their history, and rich heritage. Let us never forget those who have paid the ultimate price for our freedoms, and who fight today. God Bless America and Canada.
