American Scholars Say The Real Threat To The U.S. Is Russophobia (HBO)

President Trump set off a roar of outrage when he defied U.S. intelligence agencies to defend Vladimir Putin and Russia against allegations of meddling. Republican lawmakers joined Democrats to condemn the president's deference to Putin, but his conclusion that the U.S. and Russia are both to blame for the deteriorated relationship is not without defenders.
Take, for example, two American foreign policy experts, Stephen F. Cohen and John Mearsheimer, who both say they agree with Trump on that point, whether you think that makes them Putin's patsy or not. And they're both afraid anti-Russia sentiment in the U.S. will tank Trump's efforts.

You guys got two RT spokespeople who are pro putin and then never asked them about income inequality or oligarchs and the whole issue is that this is about rich corrupt people making it so rich corrupt people can get even richer? Seriously? I'm not afraid of Russia. I'm afraid of their rich spoiled corrupt wealthy people who are all friends of Putin. I'm afraid of how Putin has radicalized is own country with polarization and then pulled the curtain back and said hahaha see nothing matters i paid for both of them. Seriously?

Your not afraid of Russia ??....Your not afraid of the consequences of US arrogance, hubris and imperialism ?? .....Putin has said that Russia will never wage another war on its territory. And since the US has stationed nuclear weapons and its military on its borders...any wrong move will send hundreds of nuclear missiles raining down on you arrogant Americans, wiping you off the face of this Earth.

Elmer Fudd - they cant and will not because they know he is correct... they would rather have nuclear war with Russia then admit they lost the election due to a deeply flawed candidate. Until common Americans on the left have some serious soul searching on why it is they are doing what they are doing we will continue to go into the abyss.

I think the chief problem people fail to address is that similarly to how the Yanukovych election was a regional phenomenon, so too was the "color revolution" that overthrew that elected President. The previous status quo wasn't on the Crimean referendum- but neither was it being offered at the time by the new Ukrainian government. Investigations into the violence during the protests never seriously occurred because it was so convenient to just declare it was the police and only search for evidence to fuel that hypothesis rather than undertaking it how investigations should be done.

A sad day when he died. I found out yesterday. Used to watch Cohen on Cspan a long time ago. Back in 2000s. I drifted away from politics and came back last year. For all they spoke out against conflict with Russia they couldn't turn the tide. They were just outmatched by large media and the US government. And as a result of these war mongers Russia has gotten stronger and closer to China. And so many people have died these last two years in Ukraine. Bad times are coming these next 10 years for the US. Trump could help but once he's gone be back to war.

Tim Falardeau. I agree with what these guys are saying concerning Russia. Max Blumenthal has also talked about the role of Russia today (esp in the context of the Syrian War). There are 2 core aspects the corporate main stream media and the elite are trying to manipulate us: 1. They wants us believe Russia is the Soviet Union / Communists. Ukraine is much more of an interventionist threat in US politics as we saw the recent details. The hardships we experience is not because of Russia, Mexicans, Muslims, etc.. The real reason for our hardships is because those who take from us can’t stop taking from us. This is scapegoating to - distract us from the real problems. 2. As we saw in the Syrian and Venezuela military agenda, Russia is only nation who is willing to stand up of the perpetual wars/regime change wars. These wars are not for democracy, it’s for money/oil/domination. The American variety of capitalism (hypercaptialism or late capitalism) is running out of ideas and has changed the face of what America was decades ago into what it is today.

Scary how accurate these guys were, even more scary that at least on the surface we still seem unwilling to accept part of the blame and put forward real measures to resolve this crisis, which only means it will go on and on and all of us are faced once again with the prospect of going to war and even necular threat. Once we get out of this, if indeed we do, I hope we learn our lesson once and for all, we have to stop engaging in foolish and reckless foriegn policy and accept we no longer live in the world where America can get away with it, we also need a multitude of voices in the mainstream media, and we need to respectfully listen and debate those voices without resorting to defemation of character, we need an end to being unwilling to listen and take seriously voices of dessent in the mainstream narrative, and we need an end to this ridiculous notion that if you say anything critical of the prevailing social narrative you must be deranged, a russian stooge, a bad actor, or be on the side of the bad guys. This crisis has shown just how dangerous this is. I was born after the cold war but i find it facinating that during this war there was more openly dissenting voices in the media, pariliment and in the general public then there seems to be now on the issues we face with Russia today. Its madness and really scary.

Americans foreign policy is also most definitely enticed by the western industrial-military-complex. The implications of this are severe and even go to the extent of an US president being assassinated - shrouded in mystery yet considered as result of that president not letting said military complex having it's way. It definitely had a firm grip then, now it's going to tighten that grip even more.

This is actually the view of every reasonable person... It's seems ppl are obsessed with Russia but it's not the case! This is a media made situation... There may be a few in corporate media who want war at any cost so they will fan the flames of any enemy, but we are now aware enough to see what is going on and to not let it affect our critical thinking... Which is the only reason to use propaganda anyway! Just question everything... If you are being shown something over and over, ask yourself why! Think critically about all information and you'll always be well informed...

While, undoubtedly, there is a certain degree of "Russophobia" in evidence in the U.S. political and media arena's, equally Russia has done some pretty horrible things over the last decade in terms of anti-LGBTQ legislation, normalisation of racist behaviour and some very questionable foreign policy/actions. No-one wants another cold (never mind shooting) war obviously but equally the preponderance of evidence apparently supports the idea that Russians attempted to influence American elections. Do we get into the thick of whether the U.S., with it's own long history of political meddling in foreign countries, can legitimately be offended by actions like that? Sure, as part of a broader debate we certainly could, but, in the persona of the U.S. president, Trump should have had a much harder take on that. So, no war, but surely a less chummy attitude should have been in evidence? This is without even touching on the treatment of NATO by Trump in the same week ("Montenegro is very aggressive" - Hahahahahaha. Wait, is he serious?)

Remember that scene from The Avengers, where Ultron calls Captain America God's righteous warrior pretending that he can live without war? To exist, Americanism requires a boogeyman. America needs a villain to point to so that they can inflate their ego, play the role of hero and justify their hegemon and the enormous sums of money spent on maintaining it through military and economic means. There's a reason American culture has produced so many memorable comic book characters. Comic book stories and their characters were analogues for how they viewed themselves and how they view their enemies - whether it's the Soviets, Iraqis, Afghans, Syrians, Iranians, the Chinese or Russians. The problem is that their adversarial tone always stokes conflicts, much like what is happening in Ukraine right now.

There is something very interesting in the moment when the interviewer asks whether people have the right to decide foreign policy in effect. I am not going into the answers the gentlemen gave, but here is the thing: When People demanded for Brexit, it was apparently the politicians who tricked them into a bad policy as the popular narrative goes, but the opposite is supposed be true for Ukraine. It's apparently the people who were right and the politicians who had to flee were the oppressors. Now I am not for or against any party here and my understanding of the crisis, reality on the ground or historic reasons are of course very limited. But, I think it's still interesting to understand how we create notions of legitimate mandate and maliciously influenced ones. And how our notion might have very little to do with genuineness of the process involved. Of course it helps if certain places are relatively media dark for most of us.
@jameskielland5018
@jameskielland5018 2 года назад
I believe that Mearshiemer's position is more subtle. He's not saying that people in a democracy do not have the right to decide foreign policy. Obviously they vote for their leaders and they can vote for leaders who will work towards those policies. What Mearshiemer is saying is that other NATO countries also have a say in who can join NATO. And that it doesn't matter what the people of Ukraine want if the members of NATO feel that Ukraine joining would put all of them in greater danger.

Cohen is a real Russia expert. The Canada and Mexico analogy is very good. In addition to that, Ukrainians are at "best" mixed about NATO, even when you don't include ACTUALLY (yes, REALLY) pro-Russian regions like Donbass and Crimea. And most ex-Eastern Bloc countries didn't even NATO because of Russia, it was just part of their integration to the West, as they joined the EU. Yes, there were and are some that are anti-Russian (like the Baltics and Poland), but most of EE countries are quite different, some even have good relations with Russia.

"Didn't sovereign states of Eastern Europe have the right to ask to join NATO?" "NO! That's a foolish view of international politics." Poland asking for a security guarantee from France and Britain in 1939 was presumably "foolish" too. The "realist" school of international relations is very, very simplistic. Sometimes it throws up some good conclusions, sometimes it just leads to empty-headed Realpolitik.
