American Spikenard (Aralia racemosa) is not a commonly known wild edible. When the berries are in season it is very easy to identify, though. For more information see:

I’ve never heard of this plant! Love learning about new ones. Would it be possible to get some berries and a piece of root from you? I would pay for everything.

Himalayan Spikenard has a very musky odor similar to Valerian, and I understand they are related. Himalayan Spikenard is highly valued in perfumery and is quite expensive. Does the American Spikenard have a similar odor? If so, I would feel very fortunate to have what you have in this video! The Wikipedia article about this plant is only a "stub", and says very little.

I have never had the opportunity to discover first hand the scent of the Himalayan Spikenard. Valerian root has an unpleasant scent. American Spikenard root is most pleasant and somewhat conifer-like!! Some of the plants where I was were just over 3' tall and spread to about 4' wide.

Interesting! I had Aralia Nudicaulis on my old place. It looks like this. A herbalist friend alerted me to it

Fascinating... would be nice to see a more detailed identification, looking at the leaves and plant themselves.

5mm is a lil under a quarter-inch, like three-sixteenths of an inch (commonly used screw and drill size in the US)

I just read in John 12:3-7 about Mary anointing Jesus with a pint of spikenard on his feet as she uses her hair to rub spikenard and his feet. Now I don’t know if it was an American spikenard. I doubt . I know it is very expensive because one of the Pharisees complained. And it smell really nice.

Nice I found one the other day while looking for thimble berries and never seen one before and used Google lens to identify them 😀😄. Do you have any other video and rare or lesser known berries? I'm building a food Forest 😋

Where can you legally dig up the roots of spikenard and take them home? Sounds questionable.
@EdibleWildFood-1

Depends where you live - check with your local laws on foraging.

I would feel comfortable foraging only on private land where I had the explicit permission of the landowner, especially if digging up the entire plant. Most public lands in New York State prohibit foraging, for good reason. If people were allowed to freely forage, there would be nothing left for the wildlife or the ecosystem. For example, people go out to harvest ramps here, pulling up the entire plant from colonies that take years to establish. I'm not in favor of open season on such plants because people tend to be greedy.

Please don’t dig up all the wild plants.

These spread by rhizome and seed and form thickets - impossible to take them all!
@gailwhistance5409

That's what they said about passenger pigeons and American bison. It happened with the pigeons, and nearly so with the bison. Ramps form thickets, too, but it takes years. I believe you should grow your own if you plan to repeatedly harvest them.
