If I recall properly, many of the American fighter planes based on Midway were Brewster Buffalo fighters. They were absolute, and most were shot down. Don't recall if there were any Wildcats based on Midway. The Japanese suffered some losses, too, though.

The narrator keeps commenting on how brave and courageous all the Japanese sailors and pilots were. Let’s not forget that the “brave and courageous” Japanese pilots cowardly attacked Pearl Harbor without even declaring war on the US.

14:23 Yes, a torpedo plane DOESN'T stand a chance against a fighter, so then WHY does he say at 14:54 the Zero was TRULY WITHOUT EQUAL when he's comparing it to slow torpedo bombers who have to maintain a dedicated run against their target? A F4-F Wildcat could equally and easily shoot down a Kate. And a learned, "smaht" Wildcat pilot could hold his own against a Zero any day of the week IF he was apprised of the Zero's strengths AND weaknesses of THAT plane.. Unfortunately, there was a slow learning curve in the first six months of the war.

My understanding is that there was supposed to be fighter cover for the torpedo bombers but things didn’t work out. However what did work out that while the Zeros were destroying the torpedo bombers at a low altitude it meant that there was no fighter cover high above the Japanese carriers and so the dive bombers had no resistance from Zeros so several carriers were destroyed.
