@@Kai88988 Mutations is the main reason, which exists in all modern Celtic languages (like Welsh, Breton, etc.). Irish is a completely different language with its own orthography system. I am not Irish, so here is just what I observe: if a consonant follows with "h" (like the "mh"), mutation happens! (in the case of "m", into "v"/"w") Lastly, I think the vowels are also not pronounced as they are. For Caoimhe for example, the "aoi" is pronouned "ee" or "uee" for some reason. Maybe it's like English: "aoi" is pronounced as "A-yoy" in ancient times, but speakers changed while the spelling remained. I don't know for sure...

I am Italian, so even pronouncing "John" feels like forcing my mouth to produce an almost alien sound (yeah, our phonetics is unbelievably different!). After some years I've got used to how English sounds and to how the spelling often seems to be almost completely unrelated to the pronounciation, to the point that sometimes you just can't guess how to read a word unless someone tells you how it should be pronounced and this is so strange to me, coming from a Language where every single letter of the alphabet is always pronounced in the exact same way (except for a handful of combinations such as "gn", "gl", "ch"). Then I watch this video and now I know English is a walk in the park in comparison to Irish! I guessed every single name wrong. And in a couple of cases I know I would have never guessed the right pronounciation even if I tried 20 or 50 times. Quite fascinating.

I live in the States, and I am named after my great uncle, who was named after the Saint. I live with this *every day.* I've lost count of the number of times I've had this conversation: "is... roo-AD-han there?" It's pronounced like 'Roo-ahn.' "No it's not!" Ma'am, do you speak Gaelic? If not, then maybe *I'm* the one who knows how to say my name?

I'd love to hear them try to pronounce Icelandic names. I'd laugh as they struggled to pronounce names like Sigríður or Þór. (I know there are other Nordic countries with hard names, but I'm most familiar with Icelandic names)

It’s great to see Irish culture and identity getting air time - thank you. Eilis is also an Irish name which has become more popular because of Billie Eilis - there’s fadas in Eilis too so it’s authentically spelt Éilís

I only found out a few years ago (I’m 13) that Ireland has a different language, never got taught it (I’m from NewZealand) I actually found out when an Irish Singing group was singing an Irish song then was in my RU-vid recommenced so I did my research and I was shook.

French really isn't that hard, apparently polish is one of the hardest languages using the latin alphabet. Basque is apparently also difficult.

L Haidar I feel like the lack of American English variants (and please tell me if I'm wrong) and the "American pride" are factors that lead people to not appreciate language diversity. Cause if they would care, those hundreds of Native American languages wouldn't be close to extinction. And maybe if they had a more positive attitude about Native American culture and so on, every American would learn a bit of a Native American language that used to be spoken in their area before Westerners came to the New World. Pro side though: many Americans learn at least a bit Spanish. So that's a start.
