I was recently hired to replace the gutters and down spouts on a house that I had done some previously installed vinyl gutters in a different location. The existing gutters on the second story had been ripped off in a wind storm by a falling tree limb, while no gutter system can usually survive this, the gutters that were there were in need of replacement anyways. I will let you in on a little secret, I have only installed gutters a couple of times before, metal or vinyl. Amerimax, the manufacturer, has a great website with instructional videos, and downloadable forms for itemized parts listing and installation. It was a breeze!
Because the tree had done all the work, there was no removal necessary. This run is over 40 feet long, in fact its 45 feet. So that requires two downspouts, the previous installation had two, so I stuck with the plan!
I located the down spout “trap” at the lowest point on the eaves, so that I could slope to that point. Then installed the new down spout. The gutters come in 10’ sections with easy snap together “joiners”. There were three full 10 foot sections, and then a seven foot section on each end from the gutter to the downspout trap. A small section from the roof end to the downspout was put in place with an easy to install end cap. Everything snapped together, and mounted to the fascia with stainless steel screws through slip on mounting hangers. These hangers are installed 12” from the ends and on 24” centers normally. My configuration has them installed 10” from the ends and on 20” centers. This will help with the snow load that we sometimes received. The manufacturer recommends 18” centers in heavier snow climates.
After everything was installed on the fascia, I installed the down spouts, they emptied out onto the lower roof, one had to be turned 90 degrees and not to shoot water across and under the shingles. the other was a normal installation.
Finally it was onto the gutter guard. These were relatively easy to install it just a matter of slipping one edge under the shingles, and clipping the front edge to the gutter brackets. In between each segment of screen, you cut a small notch in the front of the guard, so they will overlap and support the ends. A few of the brackets needed to be moved to provide even support of the guards, in a future installation I will probably add more brackets for support, they are relatively inexpensive and will provide for a more rigid system. I'm still on the fence about these. We will see how they hold up.

FYI You used the wrong gutter guards for those gutters. The correct one is 6 ft long and clips into both the front and the back of the hangers. Look for Leaf Guard Plus 6 ft. White Vinyl Mesh Gutter Guard at Home Depot.

Yeah? I'll take a look. They were kind of wonky to install.

@@DadItYourselfDIY Yeah, the 3 ft ones are for their aluminum gutters. I discovered this while watching another video on youtube luckily before I bought the wrong ones. Amerimax should do a better job of making it clear which ones go with each gutter. It looks like the 3 ft guards worked out in this case, but in others they wont work at all.

Great tip at 8:40 about putting an extra screw in those clips, I have had issues with them popping off before.

Years ago I fell in love with the square drive Robertson head fasteners but they seem to be much harder to find now. Phillips heads are a joke. If u live near the ocean, vinyl gutters are the way to go.

@@DadItYourselfDIY I purchased the same gutters from Home Depot yesterday. It looks simple enough so I you tubed it as I wanted to see what challenges or tricks others may have experienced. Of several videos watched, yours was straight forward, simple approach and sensible. Thanks again.

When I tried to cut the gutter is cracked, I ended up using an insulation hot knife to finish cutting the gutter. I could not find K style vinyl to replace what I had so I 'reused' the existing one adding a down spout which I did find and it cut without issues.

Sorry but 2 complaints 1)The finished job loos less than professional. Several raised gaps in the gutter guard and no mention of sealing at the downspout attachment. 2) After experiencing severe rain storms, I do not see the Guards properly catching heavy run-off. This will create Trenches in flower beds and excessive water near the foundation.

The gutter guards are kind of odd, not a great design, I did go back and add more brackets and this fixed all those issues. This system does not require any liquid or chemical sealants by design. In many places in our community runoff is required to be captured into a drywall, leach field or retention pond. This home is in a neighborhood where these systems have not been incorporated.

My home does not have vertical facia so the gutters are not level at the bottom. Any suggestions? Thank you for the instructions including the gutter guards.
@DadItYourselfDIY
@DadItYourselfDIY Год назад
You will either need to install facsia or attach to the rafter tails.

Would you recommend adding any additional sealant on the seams and end caps?

I just looked at the vinyl gutters at Lowe's and the hanging brackets did not look like they held on to the outer side of the gutter very well. Did you find the brackets attached securly enough?

No issues. They key into a groove.

@@DadItYourselfDIY on the ones I saw at the store the outer edge was so flimsy that it would not stay hooked in. That made me hesitate on the purchase. Maybe I'll try a different store. Thanks

@charlespatt There are definitely more brackets per foot with vinyl that metal, which is also a good choice.

@@DadItYourselfDIY Went to a different store and the gutters there fit nicely and securely on the brackets, the first Lowes I went to may have had a bad bunch. Pick up what I need and ready to install. Thanks. I was about to give up on the vinyl until I saw your video.

Really? Mine just snapped right on. It's about the technique... center the inner part, then slide the outer part up from the back, clip it over, then push the front up and over.

We have a question how does the gutter guards u channel fit in the bracket?
@DadItYourselfDIY
@DadItYourselfDIY 2 года назад
It clips in over the guard. I did find out that if you are using the gutter guards you probably need twice as many brackets as recommended for a regular install.
