I'm running Pennzoil Ultra Platinum in my 2018 Escape Titanium ecoboost for 40k miles and very satisfied. Switching from Mobil 1 and Quaker State. As you said the engine around 3500 miles started to get noisy. Tried QS and very impressed by a quieter engine right away. Finally to PUP and kept since. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and analysises
I watched this whole video just to find out, that I am using the right oil (Penzoil Platinum) You're Good. But, I am going to try Amsoil on this change. My '98 Firebird is going to have an engine flush via Amsoil, and I may as well continue with the full change. Thanks for all of Your hard work.
Based on my own personal experience. I have used Mobil 1 and Pennzoil ultra platinum for years, I gave Amsoil a try in my Hemi Challenger to help with the cold start lifter tick and will never go back. I am sold on Amsoil, it literally feels like a new engine.
Good stuff. Thanks for the information. Currently running Penn Ultra in my Ram. Got the Amsoil XL for my next oil change. I change my oil every 4 months which works out to about 3k miles. I’ll be doing testing to see which my hemi likes best
Have you had the opportunity to test the Amsoil XL against the Pennzoil Ultra, since it has been 8 months since you posted your comments? I presume that will include testing the gas mileage, along with temperature, noise, smoothness, power, etc.?
thanks for the breakdown.very informative.not surprised about red line.i love their products, but too expensive for my wallet & 5k OCI.i do run it in manual trans & differencials though due to longer change intervals.really extends bearing & axle life, made my old T5 trans shift smooth as silk.even in winter with a cold trans.enjoy your time off work bud, you earned it.
@@FordBossMe have you run Motorcraft full synthetic previously? I've looked through the library and see where a subscriber sent in results, and other vids where you talk about the semi synthetic, but didn't see any with you running it. I could be missing it though.
I think it would be fun if you had some content on Amsoil bypass oil filter setup and the used oil analysis. The results I’ve seen on a small handful of cars show really good results for extended use intervals.
I have been using Amsoil signature series for several years however I may be changing to pennzoii platinum or redline after seeing these scientific comparisons thank you for this extremely informative and detailed video.
Rat rod did a test earlier this year and results showed since they updated the formula to dexos 3, amsoil signature series has gone down in quality tremendously. Still a good oil, but for the price it is not worth it.
I really like your content 🙏👌 wonder how’d the analysis would be with marvel mystery oil added to all them oils you tested 🤔 I’m surprised with redline because I’ve always used XL in my f150 since I purchased it in 2012.
It is good in europe we can buy asmoil with acceptable price. I am using the Sig series and I feel my engine is quite loud. I will try now the XL. Thanks so much for this informative session.......
Try Shaffers supreme 9000 first as long as u can locate.i found it in 5 gallon bucket for a phenomenal price so yeah..was gonna do amsoil but its 44 $ a gallon and u have to pay a yearly membership fee
An excellent overview and analysis of oil characteristics after 3K. You suggested the Penz ultra platinum several months ago; and my results were identical to your observations. From the moment the 2105 Tacoma, 2.7 liter was started, the engine sounded noticeably quieter with the P U P. Shortly thereafter I began to use premium gasoline only. The truck increased its gas mileage from 21.3 to 26.1 mpg with 144K on the clock, an amazing 18.4 % increase in fuel economy. Thank you so much for sharing these important parameters with us. Wish I still had my dad's 1975 Lincoln Towncar with a Holley 4-barrel on it. Richard, your genuine honesty and technical competency are sincerely appreciated with ALL of your videos.
I used Mobil one truck oil in my 2016 GMC 5.3 engin in my truck. I had around 50,000 miles on the truck. The cam and lifters went. I was just out of the warranty time.
I used to have an occasional light timing chain rattle on startup. Since I’ve had the Amsoil SS and Amsoil filter on it’s gone away. It’s been about a week now with no noise whatsoever. MPGs seems to have gone up a little bit as well so I’ve been very happy with it.
I mean just because it works for you and your situation doesn't mean that the Amsoil xl isn't better or there's not something else better that's more efficient
@@FordBossMe I plan on trying other oils to see how they perform. I commented before saying that Royal Purple HPS will most likely be the next oil I try in my vehicle. Since you’ve stated that the Amsoil tended to get noisier as you approached 5,000 miles I am curious to see if the same happens for me and if the rattle comes back.
New Ford Rangers are famous for sounding like a sewing machine. I assume it's in the valve system, but I don't know. Regardless, it disappeared with Amsoil, and runs quiet and a lot smoother.
@@TheBeatenPaths It’s definitely a great oil. I had a bad experience with their motorcycle oil but it was most likely not the oils fault. Not going back to them for my bikes but so far for my truck it’s been a pleasure. Hopefully it lasts the interval.
@@butterytoast4836 people I've spoken to that have had bad experiences with it, it's been the engine, not the oil. And, I've talked to countless people who wait till 300 000 miles, do the first transmission fluid change to Amsoil, then in 30 000 more the transmission gives up, and they blame "that shitty Amsoil".
It appears that amsoil xl may be using the same base oil as pennzoil ultra platinum and just changing part of the additive package, very similar results.
Ford Boss, great videos and real world content. Thank you for sharing everything to help educate us. Question- after all these oil tests, what’s your thought for my best choice, use the Synergy SRT or the Amsoil XL for my Ford Maverick ecoboost 2.0? Certainly either be fine but your choice? Thanks for time and help deciding for me! Regards.
I've been subscribed to your channel for awhile now and you have helped me with content you have put out. I was just wondering if you would ever try Quaker State Full Synthetic oil that used to be Quaker State Ultimate Durability full synthetic? I have ran this a number of times but I have seen no one that has had it tested. Just a thought for an upcoming oil change on one of your vehicles on the channel. Thanks for the help that you put out there for everyone. What you do is appreciated. Have a good one.
@@FordBossMe No. It's called Quaker State Full Synthetic now. It used to be called Quaker State Ultimate Durability full synthetic. The advanced durability is synthetic blend or conventional oil.
I wonder if Quaker State will be close to Pennzoil. Both owned by Shell. In the store Quaker State, Pennzoil and Rotella share the same bottles/jugs. The graphics/ writing is close too.
I feel like the Quaker State full synthetic oil is a step above the Pennzoil products in performance but that is just personal opinion with no testing so it would be nice to see a test done but I'm not pushing for it to be done if Rich has too much going on already.
Hey Rich, so let me ask you, I know you liked the XL better than SS, but I heard you mention a few times, that Boron was a great additive for bearings and such, wouldn't something with high Boron be better for my 2017 Ram 1500 Hemi, being the Hemi has the occasional lifter and cam issue? Or should I look at the bigger picture in your comparison of the 2? Love you channel sir.
I would say give it a shot on your personal vehicle and see how you like it because everybody's results are not going to be the same I think you're on to the right track
It is my understanding that the oil manufacturing companies have been scaling back the amount of calcium as an additive because high levels of calcium can lead to Low Speed Pre-Ignition in the newer vehicles with GDI engines.
Great content !! Very informative thank you for you hard work and your persistence. Where are you guys finding Penzzoil Ultra Platinum 0w20. I can’t find it anywhere? It’s out of stock
I've heard red line was a really good oil I haven't tried it but I think I should after seeing your analysis. For the past 2 years my personal favorite oil I've been using has been royal purple high performance Street or HPS for short. It's supposed to be comparable to Red Line as far as the type of additives they use. I believe when I looked at the oil analysis a while back on the Royal Purple HPS had like 1,200 ppm phosphorus and I believe around 1,150 ppm zinc. It also had quite a bit of Molly and I believe the calcium was around 1,100 ppm. I've noticed more performance oriented motor oils that are not licensed and regulated by the API typically have a much stronger and better additive package. If you notice pretty much all the oils you have listed except red line the zinc and phosphorus was around 6 to 700 parts per million that's because oils that are licensed under the API are strictly regulated on what type of additives and how much they can put in the oil because the EPA claims if your engine Burns oil the zinc and phosphorus will turn to Ash and clog your catalytic converters but personally I have never seen proof this is just what they claim. Ideally if you want the best out of a good motor oil you want to look for the more high performance oriented oils that are not regulated by the API just make sure it's under a reputable brand. And if your vehicle is still under manufacturer warranty you might want to go ahead and stick with oils that are licensed under the API just so you don't void your warranty.
Hey brother! Love the content. Could you make a video of the top 3 or so oils you’ve found from your own testing? I think I remember you listing them but can’t find the video anymore. Thanks man!
I mean I have made those videos and it's really easy for me to answer that for you right now and obviously as I continue to test oils that may change but as of right now the best oil I have tested is Redline 5W30 but it's expensive so if we're going to look at oils that are affordable overall Depends on Platinum line specifically the ultra and the Valvoline extended protection high mileage Ultra and the Valvoline extended protection and the Valvoline advanced are the best oils I've seen so far that are found at Napa or Walmart or on Amazon
That Mobil 1 is 5w-20. I bet it was 8.9 new and sheared down 7.53 in 3,000 miles. That's why it was louder than the other oils. I'm just guessing though. Thanks for sharing!
I like the Zinc and the Boron. Seems to be the best combo for the TC. Something about the zinc in panthers. Moly is good, but I guess if you focus on others and just somehow make a really good combo of addictives for the oil, it works out. I have found Royal Purple to be the best I’ve tried because of you. I personally didn’t like the noise level of the Rotella. But I got the oil for $15 for 6 quarts. I must have found a cheat code at the auto zone. I’d like to try the Red Line, but for the price… Can’t wait to see the LiquidMoly oil!
The Car Care Nut has a video called Please Never Do This to your Toyota. About how 10 thousand miles for oil ruins an engine, likely even with the best oil possible. The piston rings get clogged. My guess is changing Walmart regular fossil oil every 5 thousand miles would prevent this, or every 4 thousand miles to be safer.
In order to get a better picture is to do 2 oil changes before changing brands. The reason I say that is because a good quality oil will actually clean up the engine and start getting better improvements over time. Those viscosity numbers show if the oil deflects and prevents sludge. Amsoil is very good at keeping the same viscosity pretty much the same throughout its time in engine.
@FordBossMe Yes and the detergent package that Amsoil uses is designed to trap the dirty particle and suspend them to be captured by the filter. The main reason I use Amsoil is because of the way they test and design their oils. Their chemist use the best of what is available and they test over and over to find out the best amounts of the additive package. I am impressed with Pennzoil Ultra Platinum. I just recently started seeing more on Valvoline. I am not a fan of Mobile1 at all.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I could have swore the amsoil signature was 5w20? I'm curious to how that affected the numbers vs 5w30s? I would think ths viscosity would be different at a minimum? I watch most of the videos and I wondered that along time ago
@@FordBossMe ya it didn't perform terrible by any means I just thought it would have don't better is all but that's why we test, I switched to amsoil diesel/marine for my 02 duramax and in my boat when t6 became impossible to find so far seems fine but always wonder about switching back can't beat walmarts price and I know the key is just changing it
Could you test for another more affordable oil that Kirkland oil that you use to lube up the pistons on the 1.5 ecoboost rebuild with the coolant Intrusion ?
Brother you got to wait unless you send it to me directly I'm not making anything jump the line I've got like four different types of oils coming in right now that everybody's saying do this oil do that oil do this oil do that oil and I'm like I have to just do whatever works until people start sending me oil to bump the line I'm going to keep doing it as I see fit
Rich What’s your opinion on 4 quart jug that is around a year old. It’s been sealed tight? Also I have some 4.6 parts I would like to give you if you can use them, I would rather not throw them away. Only 10k on them.
Sure I would love to take the parts a four quart drug that's been sealed for a year is a good jug of oil there's nothing wrong with that shake it up real good dump it in
New subscriber here. I am so glad I've been using pennzoil for as long as I have. But I do want to know. What oil filter DO YOU recommend? I use either bosch, k&n or wix.
Crazy how low the hot viscosity of Mobil dropped to. Wonder if this is also why my engine seems noisy towards the end of an OCI. Trying PUP next but not sure whether to go to a 30 or a 40 grade. I've heard the PUP 5w30 is thin for a 30, closer to a 20.
So there was a mistake in a Mobile Oil testing I listed this oil as 5W30 but it was actually 5W20 which will affect how low the oil test I then went back later and a five oil shootout brand new virgin oil and mobile tested the worst out of all five oils
I drive very hard miles,I use penzoil and its good, but my mile are less than 20 milesa in thecity only. I will change in two thosand miles,I will try xl amsoil and will go 50000 mile rub a test like you did.Stay tuned.
I've already covered this I actually have videos on here and on tiktok on this very topic it's decent oil but it's really nothing to brag about it's just a basic oil
Back in the 70s I worked at the shell refinery in deer park texas. At that shell had the worst motor oil on the market also their regular leaded 92 octane would make anything you put it in knock. That leaves a bad taste in your mouth. I have been told their 5 40 rotella diesel oil is very good. These days I believe they sub out motor oil through a company in houston. Ironic how once you have been burned it really stays with you.
Just curious you opinion please , what about say 2 gts of Ultra , 2 gts of XL and 2 gts of Red Line . Then run a test on the mixed brands ??? Thanks for all your hard work !……
Hey Rich! I hope all is well. Question about some of the results. If I remember correctly in the video that you used Ams Signature series you were using 5w-20 or 10w-30 given those were the bottles you presented. I didn't think that Ams XL would beat Ams SS at the same viscosity. Also during the royal purple run you had run a flush before throwing Royal Purple in. Yes Royal Purple is pretty good but I suspect that the longer smoothness may have been due to the flush. I wouldn't mind if the flush was fine before each oil change just wanted to state my concerns.
Look in the comment section before you say anything about this type of stuff cuz this is already been addressed it's actually got under my skin and I've gotten into arguments with people about this already because they're trying to really poke and prod where they don't want me to have to react to so I've already addressed this I'm not going to address it again when you guys come here with questions and stuff if you would just take a few minutes to scroll through the comment section instead of asking the same redundant thing that's already been asked over and over again that would help me greatly and give me a lot of my time back that people require for me asking questions
@@FordBossMe Sorry rich, not trying to make your life harder. Maybe a pinned comment that you feel you addressed the best at the top would help so you don't have to respond. Apologies and good day.

I have watched this several times and have paid careful attention to the stats. Based on the things that seem to be very important to you it would seem to me Royal Purple would shine brighter to you. It does cost more than the Pennzoil but not alot more like the Amsoil or Redline.
Might be good to know what the oils started with as well as opposed to comparing whats left. They aren't all equal to start. New car with a 2.5 turbo can't use Pennzoil Ultra 😕 Pennzoil doesn't make a 0W30 in Ultra and the Euro version does meet the spec.
I would love to hear your professional Opinion on the difference between Pennzoil Platinum and pennzoil ultra Platinum. When I try to compare them my amature self, it looks like Ultra is more for performance vehichles/ V8 Engines. But when I bring that up, people tend to disagree with me.
I don't really like Pennzoil Platinum regular because it doesn't seem to be as good as Pennzoil full synthetic and that was a couple other RU-vidrs came to that conclusion as well as people individually said they got better results with the regular full synthetic Pennzoil and then the next one up the top dog would be the ultra was really really good but the Platinum wasn't really that great
If I'm remembering correctly didn't you use 5w20 signature series and then 5w30XL in a motor rated for 5w30? Obviously not detrimental to the motor but in my opinion not a fair comparison. Great video though appreciate the information!
I've told you I'm rerunning it again I did acknowledge the fact that I made a mistake and put 5w30 on the paperwork I don't know why this is new I don't know why we're bringing this up again I have no clue why you guys can't get a simple message of yes I made a mistake yes I admitted to it I wrote it wrong on the paperwork yes I reordered the extended performance oil and I took a picture of it recently and put it in the community tab for everybody to see I've got the 5W30 that I'm going to try how is that not clear? I'm going to start removing people for being silly about stuff and trying to get underneath my skin and making it seem like they actually have something of value to talk about like they're trying to prove some kind of point or call somebody out I'm going to start removing people because I'm tired of it You either go along for the ride or you get off the train and go somewhere else that's how this works
@@FordBossMe I apologize i don't have the time to watch every single video and must have missed something. I was simply asking a question its not worth making a big deal out of it. I literally was complementing your content. Not worth getting all worked over.

How about you get your hands on some 5w-30 Schaefer 9000 Synthetic, K&N Premium Synthetic, and Liquid Moly Molygen Synthetic oils! Those should be interesting!
Amsoil announced that their XL oil has been reformulated to make it stronger for longer. It would be interesting to test it to see how it compares to the old XL formula and the signature series, supposedly their top of the line oil. Rich, I would be willing to send you the new XL formula if you are interested in testing it. Thanks for all the comprehensive oil videos! Oil is still cheap and engines are expensive! Can't believe people still do 10k plus mile oil changes.
That is good, Walmart has always been $25 even just for the Platinum. But last time I purchased it, it was up to $27. Which is frustrating since Pennzoil had a profit margin of over 1 billion in 2021.
@@FordBossMe That is true. You are doing real life testing. Without including money, what would be your #1 for a 2.7 Ecoboost engine? I like the results of the Purple, but one of the additives was low if I remember correctly.
I typically use Pennzoil Platinum, but recently I had 6 Quarts leftover of Amsoil OE that I had purchased for my EX Girlfriend. So I figured I would just give it a shot since I had, and it made my Engine so loud it was cringe worthy. And you know how a car sounds when you turn the key while a Engine is already on, that's how all of my dry starts were sounding now. So within a few hundred miles I took that stuff out and put the Penn Platinum back in. Even for about a week after putting the pennzoil back in, I was getting those cringe worthy dry starts, but just every now and then,, and now it's been months since that has happened.
@@FordBossMe I hear ya, I guess everyone just sticks with what works but I'm willing to try if I hear enough good things. On the bottle it says that Full Synthetic is formulated for Turbo Charge Engines, so I've just shyed away.
Hi Rich thanks for your video. Hard to find any 0w-30 for my 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio with lower calcium and with some magnesium, all 0w-30 I’ve seen are with high calcium and almost nothing magnesium, im running Amsoil 0w-30 SS and I’m thinking to switch in 5w-30 Pennzoil U.P next oil change.
Maybe try Amsoil 0W-30 European Oil designed to protect your sensitive emissions systems in your Italian made car with optimal blend of SAPS (sulfated ash, phosphorus, sulfur).
@@jimn.9990 Thanks for the reply, European formula is even worse, there is no Moly on it and all the rest are about the same Calcium in the Sky over 3000 and no magnesium. The only 0w-30 I’ve seen in results that is balanced like almost all 5w-30 with calcium around 1300 and magnesium around 500 is the Mopar 0w-30 Alfa Romeo recommends but I have big suspect the oil on it is Pennzoil or Shell 5w-30. I’ll try next oil change 5w-30 Amsoil XL.
I think you did some good advertising for pennzoil. I had some in my cart but pulled it because I could get the amsoil xl for about the same. lol. I never tried amsoil, so what the heck. I also got some oe cause it was cheap. I can add additive But if xl is better than ss, maybe the cheap oe is best? lol
