Good video. If you lay your amsteel out on your stick, then on most trees folks will climb you can reach the stick around the tree and grab from it (just makes your arm a few feet longer, so you don't have to toss). I don't climb trees I can't reach around (last ditch safety protocol is I'll grab the sucker and slide down like a bear if I need to if something went really bad), so reaching around the with the stick always works for me. After you go behind the left side rope the first time, try going behind the right rope you've just laid down (you went around it twice in front of the rope to the right around the tree, I'm suggesting go behind again so that the rope to right also applies force on the rope). It makes a difference. I've been running something similar for 2 years, and wrapping like I mentioned I've had zero slippage.
Amsteel is a brand of rope that is made with Dyneema SK-75 fibers (UHMWPE). It is very expensive. It cost approx $2 to $6 per foot depending on diameter. You can't even sniff 50' of it for $17. I am discovering that all these guys are calling the Chinese generic UHMWPE ropes you get online Amsteel.
You can buy knitting needles are walmart for like 4 bucks and saw them / sand them at a 45 angle. This is how I did my splicing kit. I bought like 5 different sizes. Used it to build the bridge on my saddle.
I would recommend putting a half hitch or two after popping it twice. Just for insurance. I tried popping twice with no half hitch on my Novix sticks that have the lone wolf button on them. I could get them to slip if I did not put half hitches at the end. Good luck stay safe out there.
Muddy pro sticks have the best and easiest attachment method I’ve seen. Their rope cam blows everything else out of the water, cannot believe more manufacturers haven’t moved to something similar
Nice video. How does the stick hold with side pressure? I am using a cut Helium, with the original buckle as my top (and only) stick and also my platform. With 2-3 DIY Squirrel-type steps and I have my ring of steps and can go 360 around the tree. I can't dislodge the Helium stick even with maximum side pressure as I go around the tree. Will the Amsteel hold as well with side pressure from pushing around the tree? Thanks
Thanks for the response! Rope mods and daisy chains do seem to let the stick kick out easier if the tree is affecting the tree bracket in any negative way. I also feel like full length climbing sticks are a bit more prone to kicking out. But for $20 it’s worth trying out! Stay safe and good luck this season Max!
if you lean a stick against the tree on the ground and stand on it your can get your first stick 2ft to 2.5ft higher but will need an aider also if you use and aider on other sticks you can get 1.5 ft higher for each stick. I run yates big wall aider for first stick then I use the petzel st'annue sling for the last two rated to 22kn and made of dyneema works great, my sticks are cut down to 22 inches and get 22 to 25 feet to my platform. Give it a try hope it works, good video
Great video! New subscriber here after seeing this. Super easy to follow what you're doing, and man that's really cool how you made that locked Brummel by passing the loop thru another opening in the tag end. Very cool way to make the lock by only using 1 end of the rope. I've been watching some other vids on YT and saw one guy do it a different way but your method seems easier in my opinion. On that note, you mentioned, as you were showing how to do that in this video, that you saw someone else's video and that's how they did it. Can you remember the name or URL of that video? I saw a couple videos on working with amsteel and making these splices, a couple years ago but can't find them now. Wouldn't mind watching them over again. Thanks friend.
I could eve gotten at least another foot on stick 2 and 3 I also could gain 2 more feet from stick 3 to the platform making my hunting height roughly 20’. I now have 1 step aiders on each stick and can push close to 24’ I believe.
Forgive my ignorance. I’m new to the rope mods and trying to get ideas. What is wrong with a simple overhand knot to form the loop? Great video with good easy to follow details. Just curious about why the overhand loop doesn’t work.
@@GetLuckyOutdoors harbor freight sells synthetic winch rope. Looks exactly the same, I use it on my four wheeler. Might see about just getting some there.
My mistake. I’m glad that you pointed that out. You could get around nearly a 23” diameter tree with a 6 foot strap. My definition of diameter was mistaken with circumference. Won’t happen again.
I have 3/16” amsteel for this exact application, think it’ll be alright? I see other guys using 1/8” amsteel daisy chaining theirs ??? PS Dig the channel. 👍👍
Kenny Anstey I would want to do a test run and really try to abuse the stick to see if the thinner amsteel offers to slip. Without the right thickness of amsteel, I’m afraid you won’t get enough pinch between your splice and climbing stick! Good luck and be safe!
Great advise. I plan on finishing with 2 half cinches on the tree side also, you can’t be too careful. Lots of time for testing before season reopens for me.
1/8" amsteel is plenty strong enough. I am using 1/8" with a daisy chain but with a DIY versabutton (I have the old Hawk sticks that didn't come with a button). I usually end up doing the rope mod wrap though and ignore the daisy chain loops, but I have options. If you make your own versabutton, then you can fit the button to the rope. If you use 1/8" and the stock button, then there are ways to wrap and tie it so that the knot doesn't get too tight. You basically just have to increase the work that friction does on the rope (more wraps around button but behind rope applying pressure and then a wrap or two around the stick ending with a half hitch).
@@dgw6092 It’s just synthetic winch cable. Basically a nock off version of amsteel. But if I called it by another name no one would understand what I meant haha
10-4. After carefully watching the video a couple of more times, I figured that was probably the case and ordered what is probably the same stuff you used for $29. 4000 lbs, 7000lbs.... who cares because I only weigh 225!! Not like I'm going to be trying to pull a Jeep up there with me. Anyways, thanks for the vid. I already tore the nock off an old aluminum Easton and cut it.
Not going to look but how many viewers corrected 6’ CIRCUMFERENCE not diameter? Blunder like that sent my finger to close out the video. Before you post write out the script and have your 6th grader proofread
Step over boulders and trip on a pebble Don. To answer your unauthentic question, only 3 or 4? I’m glad my simple blunder sent you away. Begone, foul cretin! Lastly, I don’t write scripts and my child is in Kindergarten. Be better Don.
