This video shows various scenes of Amtrak Turboliners in service on Amtrak's Adirondack in July 1990. The first few scenes show the same train at Westport, Port Henry and Ticonderoga, NY. Later scenes show various Adirondacks arriving and departing from the D&H depot at Fort Edward, NY. At the time this depot was in poor shape, but it is now nicely restored.
Included in this mix is a quick view of a D&H local with ex-Reading GP39-2 7410 shoving up the Glens Falls Branch.
Listen for "Jingle Bells" being played on the horn by the Adirondack's engineer in two of the Fort Edward scenes.
Sorry for the shaky camera; this was some of my earliest video...taken before I realized how critical a tripod is!

Back in 1990, when I was barely ten years old, my grandfather and i drove from Philadelphia to a small town in northern Vermont. I remember we stopped at a restaurant for some grub, and there was a rather busy train line behind it. Much to my amazement and ten-year-old pleasure, a set of Amtrak Turboliners was parked on said tracks. At the time, that was the most incredible and unusual train I had ever seen.

The first time I ever rode Amtrak was either in 1991 or '92, I was 6 or 7, and it was just from Westport to Port Henry. I think it might have been this very train. I can remember there was a reverse-facing locomotive at the end of the train, and that the ends of the locomotives had a sort of bubble shape.

For the interest of those who are TL fans, Rapido Trains has just announced they will be building an HO Scale model of this in all four paint schemes. They are taking pre-orders to gauge interest. They will only build it if they see enough interest. @t Rapido are known for their museum quality level detail and fully complete and detailed interiors. If you are Turbo-liner fan this might be your only chance to get model of it. They also have a cool video on RU-vid of a walk through of TL set presently being used for EMS training where she is stored in NJ. It's all linked via their website. Enjoy. I am just a fan who would like to see this happen. I do not work for Rapido.

Back in the 70's I worked for Rohr on these turbos In Chula Vista, CA and was sent to Chicago and New York to do control retrofitting. They were beautiful machines way ahead of their time. It's a shame they're gone. I have my memories and pictures of my work on them. They will be missed.

Thanks for sharing this video, it brings back old memories from when I was a little kid. I remember the seeing the turboliners traveling along Lake Champlain near Fort Ticonderoga in the early to mid nineties. It was a beautiful sight. Unfortunately, I never got a chance to ride on one. Shame to hear they are no more, they were definitely way ahead of their time.

God I miss those old RTL's. I've had the pleasure of riding them on several occasions and found them to be a very spacious and comfortable ride. Beat the hell out of the cheesy "Amfleet" cars Amtrak uses today and there's no replacement in sight.

I kind of like the design of the amfleets but these trains look really cool and nice to ride on. This is coming from somebody who has never been on a train but these ones probably were some of the best trains out there back before I was born

There are 2 Turbos stored at Amtrak Adams yard. I believe they are being used for training fire fighters on techniques for evacuation and RR saftey.

lailasalas No, regular service. Upgraded cars, repainted engines, faster locomotives, basically an acela, without the power chargers, and serving more routes besides the Keystone Corridor, Empire Corridor, and NE corridor.

I rode on a couple Hiawatha RTG Turbos CHI to MLW and back in 1977 and a westbound Empire State Express RTL Turbo NYP to ROC in the 90s (That RTL had a bad flat spot on one of its wheels detracting from an otherwise very pleasant ride.) Questions: Why did these trains always have such “snotty noses” - what caused that brown stripe on the nose either side of the headlight? It looks like heat damage. Would the exhaust from the turbine waft down over the nose on trailing Turbocoaches scorching the paint?

It's a shame. A beautiful trainset capable of great speeds relegated to bad track. Same for the French Turbos on the PC line in Michigan.

Retiring the Turboliners was one of Amtrak's worst decisions.
@nekomasteryoutube3232
@nekomasteryoutube3232 9 лет назад
I would agree, the switch from high speed to medium speed locomotives is a stupid move. VIA rail use to have its own "high speed" train the LRC, which was replaced by slower GE Genesis locomotives. They may be "fast" but not 201 km\h fast

The Turbos were good engines. I believe they were retired due to an air conditioner problem.

There are 2 worse decisions they made, 1. The sdp40f's, and 2. Retiring the p5a.

I rode them many times on business between Albany and NYC. The Turbo Trains were fine between Albany and GCT (when they worked). Having them on the Adirondack was simply dumb. Low speed, old track. What was the purpose?

Yes, the trains in the video are the Rohr RTL Turboliners, which were recently refurbished for the second time as RTL III, but cancelled and sold for scrap due to political and cost overrun problems. The refurbs looked great, but they were fuel guzzlers and still almost thirty years old by the time the reburb project was cancelled after not even halfway completed.
