In this video I narrate a roll with Chris. He is a rock climber and a power lifter. This is one of his first rolls! I show how to teach a new white belt, who uses a lot of strength and explosiveness, to slow down. You can buy the Kings Kimono I am wearing in this video here amzn.to/3EHusc2

I apologize for my late response as I am still catching up with the responses. I think twice a week for a new student is fine for the first 6 months. If your schedule allows add a third class. Thank you for watching!

There are some white belts where trying to explain things to them is like bouncing things off a stone wall... The more physically gifted they are the worse it is. I told one guy today 5 times to relax... calm down. I tried explaining to him that if he just slowed down he'd see all the holes I was giving him. He wasn't listening at all... I ended up telling him that I didn't want to roll with him any more - more because I was annoyed at how pig headed he was being. But on reflection I wonder if I should just crush the hell out of him mercilessly and forget trying to get through to him. I can handle him fine but I'm somewhat worried that he'll do something daft like try backstepping out of a locked half guard and screw up his knees... or do something spazzy with me. Like you, I'm older - my primary focus is on my own longevity of practice.

A good one to teach him is the 2 in, 2 out rule, lol. Triangle after triangle after triangle. The 2 in, 2 out rule was drilled into me very early in my Jiu-jitsu journey, before I even knew how to triangle. Looking back I think it was great because I rarely ever get caught in a triangle or armbar as a white belt because of such drilling.

I’m a white belt that started a month ago. I have fighting experience in boxing in my past as well as young dumb street fights and it’s incredibly difficult to be able to slow myself down and relax to be more effective. In my untrained dumb head over powering and exerting a lot of energy feels like it works better but it never does lol.

Brand new white belts need to be given the feeling of helplessness. One time a rock-climbing, strong, UFC-watching newcomer came to the gym for a trial class and he was only paired to roll with white and blue belts smaller than him and he was unfortunately able to avoid being tapped in his first class. A great shame

@Jitsover50

@Pzest_Titan
@Pzest_Titan 5 месяцев назад
@Jitsover50 I just had my 2nd roll, I took your advice on focusing on defending and surviving the rounds, and I impressed myself....by delaying my partner submitting me, I was able to see how I need to conserve energy at some points and be explosive at others. I'm going to continue to focus on defending/escapes as I kept putting myself in give away positions...the learning continues
@Jitsover50
@Jitsover50 5 месяцев назад
In the beginning we inly usually only have moral victories. Such as defending the submission. Or forcing a blue belt to take an extra 30 seconds to pass your guard. Then analyze those movements. When you develop good submission defense you won't be as worried about getting your guard passed@@Pzest_Titan

@Jitsover50: Why is separating the elbow from the knee important? (I'm assuming that you are referring to the opponent's elbow and the opponent's knee, right?)
@Jitsover50
@Jitsover50 2 месяца назад
Good question. I am new to this and need to realize when to dive into things more deeply. The answer is it creates a structurally weak position that is by nature easier to manipulate. The best part of my frames are when my knee goes beyond my elbow. It is impossible to get knee on belly from side control when that fence is up. It always makes things easier when passing the guard to separate these two joints.

You talk about separating his knee and his elbow when you are playing seated guard. Can you explain to me why you want to do this?
@Jitsover50
@Jitsover50 9 месяцев назад
Good question. Knee and elbow connection are key for him to fend off my submissions. It also prevents my ability to get to knee on belly. The further I get his knee and elbow away from each other the more vulnerable he becomes. His muscles can no longer function in a supportive manner. I hope this helps.

@Jitsover50
@Jitsover50 10 месяцев назад
It takes years to develop a Jiu-jitsu IQ. In the beginning you have no idea about the concepts and principles. As your knowledge expends and deepens it allows you to learn at a faster rate. In the beginning you have to go through the slow learning to develop that acumen. Eventually you will pick things up on first glance. As for flexibility you have to research what it truly is and what stretches are needed to improve. Also remember to ALWAYS warm up before stretching by jumping rope or jogging.
