Most 7kW units in my experience are 32A chargers which when fed from a residential 240V split phase supply will provide 7kW. Thing is most public installations are hooked up to a commercial 3 phase supply where the L-L voltage is 208V which means 6kW at 32A.

EA and towing is the one thing they have over Tesla. Towed my 68 Mustang from Az to Tn over Memorial Day with my Model S. Having a rear charge port with back in spots meant blocking spots. A few you could sneak beside or behind, but the rest you were blocking at least a couple chargers. Some like Houston, we’re dead end areas, full of cars. Extremely nerve racking. Averaged 450kwh/mi at 60-65 staying with the trucks (so didn’t have to change lanes much and use autopilot). Towed like nothing was back there, better than a Silverado I made a similar trip with last year. Could pick and hold any speed I wanted going up steep grades, and still pass at will. Gas stations went to islands decades ago, chargers need to do the same. Especially once more people tow, and the charge port locations are all over the place. I’ll send ya a couple pics.

I had a similar issue with DC charging on a Rivian truck I rented on Turo, it would only DC charge on stations offering less than 100kW, anything offering more would cause a battery fault issue.

This was a great video. It provides a true example of towing with an EV. The part that was most informative was seeing the option in the Rivian route planner for the various chargers. Hopefully, Canada will get some of the adventure network but it most likely won't happen anytime soon.

Reminds me of towing with my model x. Except it was a uhaul trailer with no trailer jack (idk why they don't have em..) so I would just put the model x in the highest air suspension, put some tire blocks about an inch away from the tires, put a jack stand on the trailer tongue and drop the suspension. works pretty well..

Peppermill in Reno and Wendover has very nice rooms they do have EV chargers. It would really surprise you how nice it really is.

Man, watching this video makes me very happy I cancelled my Rivian orders. My Tesla has been very solid with infrastructure and destination chargers everywhere.

The non-Tesla cars having the option to use Superchargers will force the other networks to “sink or swim”. The other networks will either rise to the reliability and quality experience of the Superchargers to retain customers or be lost to their own incompetence.

Imagine if and when Cybertrucks start hitting the road with trailers. Those charging station areas are going to be interesting as people get inpatient when multiple chargers are blocked.

Why not just unhook. In most cases, it takes a few minutes at most. And there are usually a lot of places to park the trailer.

@@BboySnake71 That would work, but it just makes towing with Cybertruck, or any EV vehicle that much more complicated. You can find gas pumps oriented where a truck can drive straight through without unhooking. Maybe the answer is to set up charging stations similar to gas stations so vehicles can pull in and out with out going in reverse or blocking multiple charging stations. If more and more trucks are becoming EVS, it might be something worth considering.

1:14:57 I had this happen to me once driving from Klamath Falls, OR to Bend, OR. I honestly could not tell if it was rain or bugs, so I hit the wipers ... it was bugs. Autopilot kept throwing alerts the entire rest of the trip.

The windshield bug cost is not all that unusual. My wife is a fly fishing guide and drives through huge bug hatches. It looks like that or worse all the time!

I think the "derated to improve service" thing is mainly because the alternative is bringing the charger completely offline which is worse than 30kW. That being said they really should fix the charger, I'm not making excuses for EA but when you look at the 2 lazy options derating is definitely the better of the 2.

53:20 Those old ABB Terras are near the bottom of the barrel in terms of reliability. I haven't seen a single site in New Mexico have all chargers online for over 2 days. Something always faults out. Most of those also have issues giving 800-volt EVs their full power. I guess high voltage stresses out the power modules more than high amperage. ABB Terras are only slightly better than old Signets because they don't have the "Signet surge" unstable power with 800-volt EVs.

Different EVs have different charging port location going to make charging a nightmare. Everything needs to be standardize to make this work. Also failed charging stations are a pain.

To the point of having weird number discrepancies with chargers. I have a 40A level 2 charger at home, when I plug my polestar 2 into it the car says it's getting 38A, the charger says it's outputting 36.5A...neither are the 40A the charger is supposed to be...Idk who's right XD.

I am an EV owner for 4 years, and a amateur race car owner and driver for over 20 years. I would NEVER trade my old reliable pickup truck with its 35 gallon gas tank for ANY EV to tow my race car. Towing is stressful enough, worrying about where to charge, and if the cord is going to be long enough with the trailer connected is added headaches. After a long day racing, I want to get in the truck and drive with out worry, possibly fill up once, and get home with the least amount of drama. EV towing is never going to be easy for a long long time.

Even as huge EV fan, towing is one experience ICE still has over BEVs. I'm hoping that will change soon, but sometimes you have to call a spade a spade.

Today, yes depending on how and where. The cost savings will push the industry faster than any government mandate. Think of the parallel between towing with gas vs diesel. diesel costs more upfront, is harder to find, and the fuel is more expensive. That makes overall costs lower. Similar with an Ev. Higher upfront, harder to find fuel, but lower fuel and maintenance costs. Not sure at what point this outweighs the capex cost from the additional downtown though. I’m sure someone smarter than me has done the break even analysis. For me it was worth it, but my charging costs are atypical. As costs come down, efficiency and charge rates up, this math with change further. $ will always dictate the way the trucking industry goes.

For most people's towing needs, an EV makes for a better tow rig. How many people routinely tow a vehicle across 5 states? Sure, if you're towing a large camper around the country at a fast pace, EVs aren't as speed efficient as ICE. But most towing is to Lowe's or the local boat ramp.

@@geopomoco For local towing, I think you're spot on. The better handling and control offered by an EV is really nice but longer haul or into the mountains, probably better off with ICE or Hybrid for now - at least until there are more charging options available and larger batteries to help.

​@@geopomoco I guess, can't even hardly make it over the pass in one of the current Bev trucks with a trailer without an hour so to charge let alone to the lakes and rivers far far far away from level 3 infrastructure... meanwhile a gas f150 can make the full round trip on a tank of gas. It's not even in the same world yet. Sedans and CUVs are still the sweet spot today for BEVs. It's ok to have both. Let's also not pretend like I'm not putting another 50 gallons of gas in the boat anyway.

I’m 6:42 into the video, and I know you do a lot of driving, but there are some bald mfn tires on the Rivian. Then, I saw the rear passenger side tire on the trailer. What the shit? I live in Sac, I’ll wave.

Great trip , I watched the saga on the way out, Basically not stop (except for charging and foods . The speed limit in California when towing is 55 so you probably should not mention you were ignoring that and going 65 I have watched doze. s of your road trips and this is one of the best ever. However, as a Tesla Model Y owner for over 2 -1/2 years I love the Supercharger network. Watching an expert like you battle with those awful EA Charges I can imaging Riven owners can hardly wait for NACS and access to the Supercharger network,

Why is Rivian keeping their charging network walled off? No one else is, including Mercedes. Very irritating. ....... The range is too short on this version to tow. You need at least 500 miles EPA and a monster charging curve.

Can you get an early proto of Rivian's adapter from Tesla/NACS Supercharger to CCS1 port? Maybe they'll let you test the thing out before they release it to existing CCS1 drivers. BTW, I just charged at a 16 stall Tesla SC station in Scotts Valley CA where every SC had the Magic Dock so Tesla is continuing to roll out their solution which ought to help smaller brand CCS1 cars like your Kona and the Leaf. Anyway, nice ride-along trip back to CO. Cheers and drive safely.

How come, no one makes a NACS female to male extention for access to chargers while towing. Something really simple that seems to have been skipped in everyone’s planning for charging solutions. Reason I say NACS is because everyone it going to that standard.

NACS won't help all these 3rd party chargers. It will open up Tesla chargers giving you more charging options

What's up with that dirty windshield and poo all over the truck. You should have found the closest car wash and got that beauty clean. LOL. Thanks for all the great content and education. Being a newbie and still working on getting my first EV, a 2022 Ford Lightning, your content has really helped me understand the world of EV's, charging, strategy, etc.. and help prevent battery anxiety. :) I thought you had to charge all the way to 100% each time before leaving and how long it takes was a major obstacle for me. But watching your videos made me realize that charging to 80% is the way to go. Funny you mentioned being on a motorcycle in those bugs. A few years back we were on a club ride and hit a swarm of moths that just covered my BMW LT1600 windshield. A friend that was riding with us was riding a cafe racer style BMW and had half helmet and goggles and got a face full of moths. LOL.
