An exquisite and rare surviving Lada 1200L Riva with only 11,442 miles
EQUIPMENT
Reinforced body, underchassis, transmission and suspension. Profile aluminium bumpers with rubber insert, mudflaps, heated rear screen, automatic reversing lights, high intensity rear fog light, exterior coachline, wing repeater indicators, reclining front seats with adjustable head restraints, courtesy lights in boot and under-bonnet, interior adjustable door mirror, door storage pockets, 20-piece toolkit. Factory options; Nearside door mirror. Dealer accessories; Beaded seat covers.
EXTERIOR
A fascinating rare survivor, this delightful Lada Riva is finished in Ivory White which remains in superb, largely original condition. The bright uniform paintwork gleams and inspection of the bodywork condition reveals the great preserved shape this car is in. There are some small areas of carefully touched-in paintwork throughout in order to preserve the beautiful appearance. The body panels are factory fitment and the original spot welds clearly visible along the sills are a rare surviving feature. The profile aluminium bumpers still have unbroken rubber inserts with some light tarnishing to the surface. Registration etched glass remains fitted all-round as do original supplying dealer number plates and the badges to each rear quarter and boot lid proudly denote this as a higher spec 1200L model!
INTERIOR
This very low mileage Lada Riva interior remains the sturdy utilitarian and purposeful space it was always intended to be. The original black PVC seat coverings underneath the luxury wooden beaded seat covers are in incredible condition with no wear, rips or tears. The seats retain correct shape and the black vinyl door cards are immaculate and complete with fixing screws haphazardly distributed, just as it left the factory! The carpets exude durability over opulence and the hard-wearing pile is free from damage, as is the perfect clean headlining. All gauges and controls operate and have a sturdy if not luxurious feel! The huge boot area houses the original 20-piece toolkit fully complete including inspection lamp and tools stamped ‘made in USSR’!
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The four-cylinder 1198cc OHV engine is factory fitment. Developing 62bhp at 5600rpm, the sales brochure quotes peak speed at 90mph. The engine compartment is clean and complete with the build plates, VAZ VIN plate and bulkhead chassis stamp. The 4-speed manual gearbox operates perfectly and feels agricultural strong!
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
This exceptional example has factory fitted 13” steel wheels in excellent condition with perfect Lada centre caps. Five matching brand 165/80 R13 tyres retain masses of tread and the spare has never been used. The standard braking system incorporating front discs has been overhauled so operates well.
HISTORY FILE
Supplied new by Lada Man Dealer, Cants Lane Garage in Burgess Hill, this example was purchased new by Mrs Grisdale and registered on the 30th November 1984. Mrs Grisdale owned the car until 2000 and despite covering very minimal mileage throughout her ownership, the car was meticulously serviced and maintained every year, as evidenced in the large and comprehensive history file. The same independent garage was used for many years until Mrs Grisdale became dissatisfied with its new owner’s service after car was returned to her with a puncture. This Lada was very well cared for with many invoices illustrating several visits each and every year for servicing, maintenance and MOT testing as well as the original service book holding stamped entries. Mrs Grisdale also kept detailed notes about the car extending to its luggage carrying capabilities and what monthly, quarterly and annual checks should be carried out! In 2019 and following the passing of the original owner, the family were handling the estate and found keys and an address for a rented lock up garage. Upon attending the garage, and much to their surprise as they were unaware that she owned a car, this Lada was discovered! A subsequent sale to the second owner saw the car taken to a renowned Lada ‘guru’ whereby a thorough process of full recommissioning took place using wherever possible, genuine NOS Lada parts. Two sets of keys, an original 1984 Lada range brochure and a Lada Riva cushion complete the history file.
HPI Clear.

Quality control at import was such that back in the 80s my Dad bought a brand new 1300 only to find out over a year later it was actually a 1500 and they’d put the wrong badge on the boot. The dealer put a new badge on the boot and helped get an updated V5.

Ah! How lovely to see one of 'our' children! I worked for Cants Lane Garage, as a mechanic, from the mid 1990's until its closure in 2001 (the site was sold for development) Funnily enough I'm going out to dinner with the two former directors on Friday, one of the two would have been the salesman who sold the car. Cants Lane Garage never really disappeared completely, it survived in one form or another for years..... It's been quietly growing for a few years, so will hopefully be fully relaunched in the near future. I still own four Ladas.

@@KGFClassicCars I never personally saw the car. I would remember it very well if I had. I spoke to my former employers yesterday and Mike, one of the directors, sold her the car. She apparently wanted a pre Riva 1200, but they were no longer available. The estate pre Riva was still available, but she didn't want one of those. Apparently she was one of those customers that you just couldn't please...Pretty amazing considering that all happened nearly 40 years ago! He even remembered where she lived.

Got one of these in 2000 - was only 4 years old - paid £250 for it as a stop gap whilst waiting for a brand new Skoda Fabia when it was launched - they wouldn’t hold my PX value for my Ford Escort so it made more sense to trade early and get a banger for a few months. The Riva was one of the last to be sold here, came equipped with a catalytic converter/carburettor combination which rendered almost all of them utterly useless and prone to breaking down - what looked like a bargain, low miles, great bodywork (considering it was a Lada and knocked together using steel presses that were clearly long past their prime at this point) the Carb issue meant it wouldn’t drive anywhere once it was warm - to fix it would be £400! (A Lada specialist garage said “don’t bother - all of these last ones are for the knackers yard”. I didn’t bother and as luck would have it, some kind soul decided it would be fun to set fire to it! So it ended up costing me £150 to have a scrap merchant drag it’s burnt out shell away. When it did drive I found it to be the most horrific thing on 4 wheels I’d ever driven - shocking ride and handling, terrifying in bends - would kick out the back end on a damp day, understeer made a Morris Marina feel sporty and it felt like it would fall apart at any moment. Truly dreadful cars. I doubt very much anyone, no matter how loyal to the communist contraptions, is going to pay £11k for this heap - I doubt many Lada followers would even have that sort of money to begin with. Quite a few overpriced KGF cars that are apparently ‘sold’ seem to crop up for sale elsewhere at more sensible prices - presumably when promises of windfalls don’t materialise for the people selling them…

And that was an export model. The ones produced for soviet domestic market were even worse. But! For many, many soviet people this was an absolute dream. Well, to own any car was a dream, you had to wait for up to 10 years to finally get one. Or, if you were desperate and had money to buy used one, you could get one any time from some private seller, only then it cost you nearly twice the price of a new one, because you could not just go and buy new one wenever you wanted. That's one of the many "positive" sides of "wonderful" Soviet Union... This one shown in video is in mint condition, i would love to own it for nostalgic reasons.

They are still being driven in Russia, VAZ made them till 2014. Latest examples were terrible, earlier like this are actually good. My granddad owns 1991 year model, his second car for a fishing vacations, he truly loves it, it can go anywhere, and if repainted and caringly maintained, will run forever. And my friend owned customised classic 1973 model, tuned by herself, with cool-looking wheels and sunroof, also engine was tuned to more power. Learned how to drive in Lada: oh, unforgettable: this neglected and rusted jalopy was falling apart even when PARKED. And it was made in 2009!
