Hi Joe, I installed Mint 18.3 on a newer Toshiba Satellite laptop (gave up on the Optiplex). It's fantastic, everything works and I'm going to enjoy the Linux learning curve. I wanted to thank you because you have effectively 'talked me through it' all the way. Chalk up another convert! I had tried to do this once before about 3 or 4 years ago; this time however it was a lot easier. But I tell you Windows 10 was the last straw - everything about it is an insult. I can definitely see myself switching permanently in the not too distant future. Anyway, just wanted to let you know I really appreciate your no-nonsense, straight-up style. Cheers, mate!

This is a historic day for me: after 18 years of "wanting to", I am FINALLY running Linux for the very first time! And this is mostly thanks to Joe Collins. I had stumbled onto references of Linux Mint a few days ago and was intrigued. Yesterday I had looked around at this great resource centre of RU-vid and found some videos that were specific to Linux Mint. So far I feel that Joe Collins' videos are the most user-friendly and informative, and providing me with enough desire and confidence to give it a try. I can't believe everything went so smoothly on this puny Asus eee netbook from 2013! At the moment I'm booting 32-bit Mint 18.3 MATE from a USB (had used Rufus to handle the ISO file and make the USB bootable). First impression: Mint is as user-friendly as Windows. I will most likely overwrite this netbook and have Linux Mint installed. I can't decide yet whether to stick with this or go for 64-bit. And/Or Cinnamon. But never mind - these will be for another time. Right now I think I should just explore Linux Mint first. THANKS, Joe! -- Petaling Jaya, Malaysia

Have fun man. I've used Linux for years and still am a fan of Mint, aka, the "newbie distro." Sure, it's friendly for beginners, which is a good thing, but it's also great for long time users like myself who just want a simple system I don't have to toy with 24/7.

Oh and before I forget... Thank you so much for these helpful tips. I've been logging out of my account, and then logging into the "root" user to mess with other partitions I have on my computer... which contain backups. But now that you showed me the "groups" I finally added myself to the root group and now I don't have to log out of my admin account just to login to the root user

I love Linux Mint (Mate) 18.2. I installed it on two of my laptops. Both were upgraded flawlessly. I often hear from people who don't want to use Linux because you spend more time fiddling with the OS than using it to do productive work. With many of the other versions on Linux, I would agree with that. Mints is the exception. I now tell friends that have issues with Win10 to go with Mint.

Hi, Joe! I really appreciate the fact that you try to respect the original pronunciation for 'mate' (the Desktop and the infusion we drink in Argentina), and only for that reason I wanted to tell you that actually the tonic syllable should be the first one, so the correct pronunciation would be mAte and not matE. I hope to be clear. Thanks for your videos!!!

This is the only review I seen that really displays the OS as is meant to be, no politics, no bias, no talking c-rap. I use this distribution not because I am a newbie, if I let microsoft have its way they would let my long ago $1000 tablet pc go into obsolescence. With this exact distro amd number version is running better than when it was new. The system is just appropriate for the PC and just the way I like it and with the looks that I like (properly modded), I can install Solaris whene it belongs, FreeBSD in x64 PC and in some entry level servers, not too advanced, There are many type of users of pc environments so lets respect them all, we all do what we need to do. The reason I pioneered into mint is because it offered me a virtual keyboard right at the login screen, mo small feat in other distros that I tried (Still trying), it connects to TVs with HDMI and plays all kind of media and is connected wireless on WiFi right out of the box. Unless you are a heavy gamer or a MS specific application user, there is no need for anything other than install the proper programs. Been using Ubuntu for the last ten years as single OS with no concern at all. All the installs that went wrong,,, was totally my fault for fooling around, other than that, I just run updates as they pop and nothing happens to the system.

Very helpful video! I'm new to Linux and after trying to do a dual boot install on a USB connected external drive, with another Linux distribution, and somehow ending up with Windows over written, I listened to Joe's “Top 5 Mistakes New Linux Users Make” video, and then this one. Then I took Joe's advice and got the Mint 18 User's Guide and read the first half of the . (It doesn't make so much sense trying to read it all before doing the installation and having the OS to work with.) Fortunately I was doing the installation on my laptop and still have my desktop on Windows. All went well and I was surprised how easy it is (both to install and use). My only problem is that I can't find drivers for my U-blox 7 GPS “stick”.
@green1viking

Then I found the driver and set it up with GPSD and tested with XGPS and all is good.

Installed Mint 18.2 Cinnamon to a Dell E6400 laptop and an iMac 9.1 with no issues. The Dell had 18.0 and the iMac had 18.1, both with a 4 partition setup: /boot, / (root), /home, and swap. I just let the installer format the boot and root partitions while leaving the home partition alone. All my configurations and data were saved. Try that with Windows.

One thing for those looking at switching from Windows to Linux Mint: "Older machine" doesn't mean the same thing to Linux people as it does to non-Linux people. Any PC manufactured in the last five years can handle the Cinnamon desktop with absolutely no issues.

I just installed linux Mint 18.3 Xfce on an old Dell laptop, the project turned into a hobby as I ran into roadblock after another. First, I was running the 32-bit version and it was slow so I increased the RAM twice, the last time by the actual limitations of the motherboard - 4GB not 2GB. Then I found out the 32-bit XP of the OEM OS was running on a 64-bit processor so I changed my linux to the 64-bit version. The result was great. Next, a faster processor.

theres nothing wrong with arch but people get kennel blind to whatever distro is their fav. I like debian base systems myself but but I also have and use arch. but I think the bigger point here is newbs are NOT going to stay with linux if they get thrown into an arch install for their 1st go round on linux. they will RUN back to windows with a horror story to tell their friends. and as much as i HATE unity, id still point a newb to buntu flavor before id even tell them about arch.

My curiocity bring me here ! YEs ..because I start a week ago taking my first steps on linux. Have an old laptop. I installed Lubuntu, who is awesome too, and so light ..but since i was a Window user for decades, tried to find something more appealing.And I am surprised, when installed mint on my Acer 5735z, everything works 'out of the box' (don't even needed to search for drivers). Linux mint is a great, I run the xfce version and is very responsable . The only thing need to learn is the CLI ( Command line interface ). I am familiar with old DOS and Amiga OS, but have lost my 'edge' using commands. Have to re- learn soon :D

I managed to break my 18.1 + Mate, and had to re-install. Then about 36 hours later, 18.2 went gold, so I rolled my eyes and got the ISO and re-installed again. So far, it's just the same as 18.1 except slightly more polished, slightly more up to date and well sorted. I also run VirtualBox, and a collection of distos that I'm curious about. So my re-install blew away about 12 virtualboxes. I still have the files, but you can't (easily) import them and just keep using them, Oracle deliberately make that hard, so the simplest fix was to just re-install the ones I wanted. So now I have Debian 9, Antergos Mate, Mate Revenge (which is funny - it's a KDE install, that's had Mate dropped over the top of it. So you get updates for the system, and you get updates for Mate, and you get updates for KDE, because everything is still built on KDE...) I've got Ubuntu Mate 17.04, and I have Manjaro XFCE. (Got to play with something that's not Mate.) So far, 18.2 has been bloody magnificent! I can't recommend it highly enough. I play with several different Arch distros, with Mate desktops, to try and learn my way around Arch, but Mint + Mate is my daily driver and host, and unless something changes very dramatically, that's going to continue. I know a good thing when I see it.
@Kneedragon1962
@Kneedragon1962 7 лет назад
@Squidgy - Ah! Yes, about that... So I have tried this. About 50 or 60 times. So you find the item on the menu, and it asks what you want to import, so you name the HDD file, and it goes 'That's not a virtual machine, I need an XYZ file which defines the VM.' So you find that and you tell it to import and it goes No, I can't do that! That's not my VirtualMachine. That VirtualMachine was created by VBox [unique identifier] and I am VBox [different unique identifier] and that would be like peering over the urinal at some other man's tackle. So then you go looking for what you'd have to do, and there is an option to 'export' a VM so another machine can use it. But when you have 12 ~ 15 VMs which you play with and keep up to date, you don't want to go through the 37 step process to export that virtual machine so another VBox can use it, every time you want to back up, because that's 6 hours work. It's actually just as quick and easy to fire up a new VirtualBox and install the latest Debian from scratch. Less time, less energy, less trouble and fewer screen and menus. If you have a system crash and you still have the VM files, including the HDD file, then so what? Unless you knew you were about to have a system crash and exported all those VMs the day before, then... The only VM you can import, is one that has been exported. And exporting them is not a quick or simple or obvious process, just as importing them is not a quick or simple or easy process, and you'd then have to repeat the entire song & dance for each one of your VMs each time you want to back up... It's easier and quicker and simpler to just start again. I have tried to do this, a number of times, and it is slower and harder and more complicated and painful, than simply starting from scratch. [edit] Oh, and there's one more step. So the virtual drive file, you can stick off some place else, like on the spinning rust drive, which I do. I have a /vm/[name of distro] directory, and it goes there. But the default directory for this stuff is your / home/vm/ directory, and while you can stick the 100GB drive file on the HDD, the VM definition file it needs is on the SSD, in your home directory, and that's not something you can easily change. So when your SSD gets corrupted, you have the drive file on the HDD, but the file it needs to import, is on the SSD, which is screwed. You can't import the HDD file unless you have the definition file. And even if you have it, you can't do that unless it has been marked as EXPORTED. If you boot it up and use it, after it's been exported, then it's no longer exported. I suppose you could copy all of those files off some place else, but then I'd have 12 ~ 15 100GB files, and another 12 ~ 15 100GB files as working backup, and I don't quite have that much disk space... Oracle don't go out of their way to make this easy - they go a bit out of their way to make it difficult. I am guessing there are pretty good reasons why you'd want it this way in the data centre, but as a home user enthusiast, it's a complete schamozzle! [edit] Oh, and there's the other thing! Sometimes you get a fail, and there's a good simple explanation of what went wrong. But more often you fail and there's a thing which says "Fail - Click to get a definition." So you click and it goes "Take down this number and present it to the onsite technical adviser from Oracle when he gets to your premises - [418 char unique random identifier.]" You can try and search that string on the Oracle site, but all you get is a line about "See your Oracle representative." Have I had this happen? Yes, I've been down that path about a dozen times. It's a waste of time copying & saving that damn string, because you can't do anything with it. You're meant to show it to the man from Oracle. I really suspect all it is, is to say "Yep, he really does have a random number. It must be stuffed!"
@Kneedragon1962
@Kneedragon1962 7 лет назад
... and now you've got me started, I can tell you something else. FlightGear (flight simulator) does not like VirtualBox and VBox does not like FlightGear. You can have several VBoxes running, and fire up FlightGear and go fly an aeroplane, but with some planes (I know about the Boeing 777 - 200) if you do stupid old man things in it, like try and do a loop at low altitude, not far from the control tower ("Aw, don't buzz the tower, Mav!") then you can lock up the sim, and it starts bleeding memory at about 1 MB/sec until you can shut it down. And sometimes it shuts down and sometimes it doesn't. And if it doesn't, you have the choice to wait until it's used all available RAM and all available virtual memory and see what happens next, or you can reach down and pull the plug. I've done that several times. The last time I did it, it corrupted the SSD, and I had to re-install the operating system. Experiments since have shown that doing it while VMs are running is not the real killer, but if you run a few, and then shut them down, but leave the VBox management ap open, that's when things go pear shaped. So now I use VBox, and when I want to fly I shut VBox down completely, then fly. Then I can fly like an absolute screaming maniac and nothing much goes wrong. In brief, use one program or use the other, but don't use both at the same time. And don't fly a big modern airliner like Manfred Von Richtoffen. The Red Barron doesn't like Penguins or something... ;-)

Kneedragon1962 you should check out qemu and kvm. Way more powerful than virtual box
@Kneedragon1962
@Kneedragon1962 7 лет назад
Ta. I don't need more powerful, I'm pretty happy with this. It just has a few features I wish were different. But it's written for business and the data centre - not for silly old buggers to play with testing and peeking at other Linux installs. I've just got to stop getting into situations where I need to pull the plug out of the wall before I burn through all the virtual memory.... I got told many years ago, you power off an SSD at the wrong moment, and you can screw it. Well, now I've done it....

For those who have problems with their sound device (dedicataed soundcard or something else), install Alsa. Google it for Linux Mint and you will find a good explanation from around 2010. Once you install Alsa the sound device will work if the driver exists for Linux (Soundblaster is supported). Linux Mint 18.1 didn't come with Alsa installed for whatever reason, I needed to install it to get my soundcard to work. A word of warning, be careful not to select any open source drivers if the vendor (Intel/AMD/Nvidia) offers proprietary drivers for Linux. You probably loose performance with the open source drivers. With regard to Joe his comment about the criticism on Mint, that is exactly how it is. The real nerds like something like Gentoo or ArchLinux, they want to set it up themselves, choose every component themselves, keep the system as light as possible, tweak it to their liking. Great for experienced users, not adequate for beginners and intermediate skilled users.

I have an old desktop that had a 32 bit version of Windows XP installed. .......I downloaded Linux 18.2 (Sylvia) Mate 32 bit version to a usb stick. I loaded it the Linux O.S. from the flash drive and did a clean install, I decided to delete XP completely and do a clean install. To cut a long story short, it works well, but now I am wondering if I should have installed the 64 bit version, I guess I'll just have to wait and see if I have software or hardware problems in the future.

Hey there! I`ve been planning on installing Linux Mint on my laptop, because I want to learn more about it. And after that putting a Windows virtual machine on it, for the applications I like on Windows, but I see that I might have problems getting the right drivers (wifi, video, sound, camera etc.). Should I be concern about it or just go for it? My laptop is Medion P7648-MD99980

I can't wait for Ubuntu 18.04, my 16.04 install is running great after 1 year on my Netbook also I upgraded the Kernel to 4.8: I get Mega screen tearing (its very cringy in high fps scenes (flashing) but A/V still are synced.... like with Netflix) Ubuntu 16.04 has been installed since Beta 2 till the 2nd point release with no problems - BUT NO fglrx amd driver.

GhostBSD is quite like Linux Mint and the best thing is it is based on UNIX System V without the AT&T source code but hey Linux Mint 18.2 is a great package and all you guys out there watching Joe Collins should install Linux Mint 18.2 or give the latest version of GhostBSD a try.

If i install Linux Mint and totally erase W10, wich you advise against it, i know, can i reinstall W7? I have the installation DVD with W7 on it. Don't like the Cinnamon startmenu. Can you change it to classic? I use Classic Shell on W10, because i don't like the W10 startmenu.

Jerry I have been using Ubuntu16.04 since it came out on both an HP DV7 and a Dell 7720 both with external monitors. My Dell system finally crashed printing with Gimp. I install all my machines with 4 partitions (boot, system, home, and swap. First I took my HP and installed Ubuntu 17.10. I had printer problems and other issues and was not sure I liked gnome. I never liked the Unity Dash either. So I decided to try Mint 18.2 64bit cinnamon. I really liked it but I have an issue where I do not think I can use it. My Dell laptop has an nvidia graphics card (also tried the generic driver as well. The big obstacle that I cannot solve is this: My screen saver goes on and 30 minutes later my system is totally locked. I have to do a forced turn off (hold down the off power button and then boot it again. I am then ok until I leave the machine to grab a coffee and it all starts again. I disconnected my 27" monitor for a day and just used the laptop with my 17" panel and I had no problems. So I will play with 17.10 on the HP as I think it is a beta gold and should not have been released as anything else. I also do not like not having the menu bar (File, Edit, View etc at the top. I really like Mint if there is some way I can solve the external issue. Other than general coputer work my main interest is photography and that means digikam and gimp. It also does not appeal to me to not have the current version upgraded in the repository. I do not want to be a slave to an OS any more; just a user. I decided to give up my 27" display for a week and just use the laptop and also play with the 17.10 HP. If I find no solution I will reinstall Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. I just wish the repositories would also get updated. I do listen to others but find Joe Collins to be a step ahead of many.

Hi Joe. Thanks for sharing this video. I am currently using a ASUS G752VS 64 bit laptop with the annoying and frustrating windows 10 operating system from Microsoft. I have had enough of Windows 10 so now want to do research in using another operating system. I am a video Editor and use DaVinci Resolve 16 | Blackmagic Design software. I want a Linux operating system which will work with my editing software. Can you recommend any?

Out of curiosity, how are laptops customized to run a particular OS? Is it about picking hardware components that were succesfully tested for drivers included in a selected OS? Is it about smaller changes like pre-setting a recovery partition for Windows? Or is it something completely different? May I ask for some examples?

I'm coming from Macs and Windows. What is the best way to install and run multiple versions of Linux on the same machine so I can pick the one I like most? That's easy on a Mac, just install in multiple volumes and switch between them holding down the option key on boot. How's it done with Linux?

If you want to spend a few bucks, Ebay has collections of distros you can buy, and sometimes scads of them in a bundle you can get. When starting your computer, boot from the CD or flash drive (which ever one you purchased) by pushing the F2 or F12 or whatever key you have to press to change the boot order and run the programs "live" - meaning you have all the features of that distro without actually installing it. Of course your add-on programs won't be there, but you can check out what each one looks and acts like. When you are finished checking out the distro, just close it without installing. You would have to reboot your system using the next CD the same was above to see which ever other program you chose to preview. I did this once and have a whole pile of outdated Linux OS's.

Used to love Linux Mint, but I just installed Linux Mint 18.2 Cinnamon on my Acer all-in-one machine that came with Windows 10 on it. Has Intel everything, but I have screen tearing, which I never had in Cinnamon, and also right now I can't even install software via the software manager which is real weird. Did you have any issues installing software? If not, try to install software today to see if you have the issue as well. May go back to Ubuntu GNOME LTS

If you intend to do manual in-place upgrades then separate partitions are a good idea. If you don't think you'll be doing that just letting the installer take care of it is fine. :)

Hello, I am an intermediate linux user. I have been running Ubuntu on my main desktop for years and I have been running Ubuntu MATE on a laptop for about half a year. My question is I am fixing up an old Dell Dimension B110 for my Dad who is retired and has used up to Windows 7 but likes XP the best. He will be using this computer running XP as a daily web browser light duty desktop. I was going to install Ubuntu MATE and the virtualize the XP in that. I think the computer is 32 bit and cannot handle 64 bit. He is a basic computer user. Do you think Linux Mint will be better for him than Ubuntu MATE? The Dell will have wifi, sound card, and the maximum of 2 gb of memory that it can handle.

I have been playing around with Linux bistros for decades I think some of them are really sweet. And some actually grabbed my attention and made me think that perhaps they would be my way of getting off of Windows forever. Linux mint is the one that kisses me off the most because my methods involve creating a bootable USB drive. In order to evaluate the distraught without risking my installed Windows.I like just playing around and evaluating everything. I usually end up installing chrome, because I like the sink function, and then I struggle with what Linux doesn't know how to do, which isAllowing my USB microphone headset to work, then I try a few of my favorite utilities, and soon I have a desktop that I think could very well be my permanent desktop. I usually find a really sweet desktop, and I organize my icons. Just the way that I want them. I'm happy, I may yet switched to Linux mint completely. Still, there's no way to back this up. The backup process is more convoluted than anything I have ever seen in a Linux Bistro. To the developers of mint. Why don't you have a method to completely back up everything that I have created? The process of choosing which files, and which pieces of information I want to save is beyond stupid. Keep in mind, I don't believe this should be anything like Windows, but still, there should be a way to say. Ack up this entire bistro, and let me boot back into it later on when I want to. Your friends over at puppy Linux, have a nice backup feature to Backup everything that is stored into a persistent file, which is opened when I reboot later on. Linux mint has no such feature. Spending an hour and a half setting up my Linux mint system to be exactly what I wanted is a waste of an hour and a half because it will not back itself up and let me get back to it when I removed later on in the day. You can tell everyone how great Linux mint is you can brag about cinnamon being a nice desktop. But if you can only boot into it, and have to set it all up again and download all the apps you want to use, it qualifies as a usual piece of Linux Junk that I have wrestled with for 20 years. You want to be mainstream? You're gonna have to deal with people who grew up on a Windows PC. That doesn't mean we won't learn to adapt and move away from the Microsoft way, but you're not getting us anywhere to move to. Two hours of setting up a beautiful cinnamon/mint desktop that is exactly what I want, only to have it disappear when I turned off is basically a gigantic F. You. Not only that, but it would be swell iAnd by the Puppy Linux kicks Linux mint's ass any day any time

Is Linux capable of running without being loaded onto a virtual machine? I’m trying to find out if Linux can replace Windows in an office work station environment. So, I started looking at installation videos first. All of the videos I’ve watched show installing onto a VM. I would like to see a clean install directly onto the hard drive. No duel boot, no virtual machine.

Of course Linux Mint will run on bare metal. The reason VM's are used in videos is because it's the easiest way to show the entire install process.

Watched this while making a pizza. Long time windows user since 3.1, currently on 7 and not looking forward to next January. Looking at rebuilding my system, and a dual boot with Mint on a new ssd, and windows on a spare ssd. Thinking that way I can learn Linux, get comfortable with it over time, and have the dual boot for some jazz such as a few games and programs. Gotta say Mint looks good for someone like myself. I do find it odd, perhaps as a perspective from a windows user, there is a strange lack of a/v for linux.
