Came across your channel by chance , Glad I did I’m totally hooked . Brilliant commentary so easy listening . And beautiful pictures And a wealth of knowledge, Thank you
What a excellent gallery of beautiful images. I must say 'Thank you' for your inspiration and Know-How. You helped me a lot after changing my system from Canon to Olympus since the last 15 month. Then, additional I'm very thankful for your moderation and voice of your films, because as an German I can follow your words excellent. And at last I've learned techniques like making pictures inside churches. Another point is, that I think you are a very talented landscape guide for Great Britain and let the world know, how beautiful GB is. So, many many thanks for your work and for sharing it with the community. I wish you a new wonderful year with health and inspiration and time for yourself to taking photos in 2019 again.
Thank you for your very kind and generous comments. You make a very interesting comment about my voice. There appears today to be a 'cult', if that is the right word, to speak quickly. Half the time I don't understand what they are talking about and therefore what they are trying to say gets lost.
I worked for a recording company in the 60s and 70s, therefore I understand the importance of a good voiceover that is intelligible to everyone and not rushed. My friends whilst appreciating that I am an endangered species, might think that I should be extinct! They are joking of course, but the accolade is that they sometimes imitate me!
Loving your You Tube programs Derek and your style of photography. I’ve just purchased an EM10 with the pancake 14-42 and 40-150 kit lenses, primarily as a travel camera. Definitely going to experiment with spot metering - you explain it so we’ll. Thank you.
I am pleased that you like my productions. I have done a programme about the E-10 but you may find this one about spot-metering helpful. Here is the link: - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ox-Ud0Nmw5E.html
@@DerekForss Hi Derek. Tried spot metering highlights at Wivenhoe today as the sun was full on from the other side of the River Colne. I was very pleased with the results after making adjustments in Lightroom. Thanks again.
Thanks for your lessons, still learning to travel light. Unfortunately Olympus isn’t in Brazil, so I brought my equipment from US. I use MFT since 2014 for it’s light weight and, as I usually travel with my wife in a motorcycle, for it’s size. Right now, influenced by your video, we are leaving to a ten days trip and I’ll take only my EM5 MK2, the 12-40 2.8 and the Panasonic 35-100 2.8, leaving the 40-150 2.8 and the primes. Thanks again.
Thank you Johannes, I try my best! As a matter of interest, I am currently preparing a new programme featuring the Olympus E-PL9 PEN and new TG-6, cameras costing less than £500 in the UK. Expect to see it in a month, if you are a subscriber, you should be noted automatically. Best wishes and many thanks.
Derek, I nominate you for best Site, Scenes & Music ! If and when I get back to the Uk would love to meet you personally for a first hand photo shoot if possible.
I am sure we could meet in the future, but only when Coronavirus Epidemic has passed. In the meantime you may find my website of interest and helpful: - derek-forss-1.webflow.io/tuition
Brillant photographs as usual, having lived by the falls at Dolgoch & been a member of The Tallyllyn Railway I am trying to find your video covering your visit. Can you please tell me which Vlog it is on.
I am sorry, but as yet I have not produced a dedicated programme about the Tal-y-llyn Railway. In due course, it will be featured in a new programme 'End of the Line' exploring lines that have close, but now enjoying an alternative existence.
Thank you for your comments about my programme. Regarding your question. I save to RAW and do the digital imaging processing myself to JPEG instead of letting the camera do it. I have done a RU-vid Video about it, here is the link: - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-o1TdHY8Actg.html
Fantastic video as always. But now tell me, is it just luck or are you waiting for the right time to go out to shoot. England as a bad weather reputation even from here in Canada, but you seem to always have chance on your side or is it only a wrong perception we Americans have from UK ?
Not all photographs are taken in good weather. Our variable climate and constantly changing weather patterns is what makes landscape photography in the UK interesting and challenging. Before I leave home I check the latest weather forecast from the BBC and then look at the sky! An understanding of cloud patterns and which direction the weather is coming from is helpful. When I present my holidays, my regulars who enjoy winding me up, ask if I did the 'Sun Dance' before breakfast behind the bicycle shed! I invite them to join me, no formalities, dress is optional, but no one takes the offer up!
Thank you, Derek. I've only just discovered your videos thanks to a recent purchase of an OM-D camera and I must say that both the camera and your channel are brilliant. However, I have a technical topic to ask about: There are reports (and I can see it also in my pictures) that the electronic shutter causes more noise and similar artifacts when high ISO is used and even in dark areas of low ISO images. That's why I stick to the mechanical shutter unless total silence is required during the photo shoot. So do you, in low light situations, prefer to use the mechanical or the electronic shutter? Or do you use just one of the types all the time?
I am delighted that you have discovered my channel. You raise a matter that I am not familiar with! I will look into it. It might be a topic for a future production. Noise can be a problem in lowlight, but have found ways around it when shooting and in post-production. See my programmes about 'York at Night', also London and Nottingham. Thank you for getting touch.
@@DerekForss I have seen those videos and I understand your post-production procedures, indeed. I was just curious which shutter type you use on your OM-D and whether you are aware of this issue (maybe it's not so important or even apparent to most people).
I can understand the compression effects of RU-vid that are detrimental to images that leads to softening and artefacts, but lack of dynamic range in jpegs and a small sensor makes for more noise in the shadows. Do you shoot raw, as this could help with shadow and highlight recovery in post?
All images start life in RAW with only minor adjustments in camera. Therefore, if quality is reduced in post-production, it can be undone. Images for publishers are not mucked around with too much.
Derek what have you done to your images, as most if not all are over sharpened and this has highlighted the noise from the micro four thirds sensor. In Lightroom go careful with the sliders and DONT use HDR, it looks terrible and it creates a “cardboard cutout “ look. This proves the limitations of such a small sensor as Panasonic has the same problems, having used the GH5 and the dynamic range is much the same and very mediocre.
No sharpening in camera or post-production or HDR. I would have thought it unreliable to judge the quality of images from resized JPEGs converted to mp4 for RU-vid. Full size copies of these images are readily accepted and used by publishers for reproduction in books, magazines and calendars.
