Fast becoming my favourite Olympus/OM System RU-vidr. I have already learned so much from your videos, and the manner in which they are delivered adds an extra element of enjoyment. It would seem that the 12-100 f4 lens is deserving of the almost universal praise it receives.

Wow, thanks! I try to be a little different! I have recently fallen in love with the OM-5 and 12-45 Pro Lens. Look at OM-5 Playist.
@originaljamtracks

@@DerekForss The 12-45 is a great little lens, and of course a lot lighter to carry around than the 12-100. Do you find though that you miss the longer range of the 12-100? I had previously carried two lenses: the 12-40 f2.8 alongside the 40-150 f4, both superb, and in combination covered a wide range. But the convenience of combining essentially both of these into one makes the 12-100 a truly special offering. I only wish it were closer in weight to the 12-45!

@DerekForss 11 месяцев назад
Some photographers may find the range of the 12-45 limited but fortunately I am not a fan of telephoto landscapes. I prefer the wide-angle end of the lens. I too wish the the 12-100 was lighter, something you become aware of as you get older!

Your "rucksack", contains a very important item that most should pay attention to...First aid kit! I don't know if you've had a situation where you needed it but, how invaluable that can be for all sorts of situations. Thanks for that reminder, Derek!

Thank you for your comments. When I ran photographic holidays for HF, they would not employ me unless I had taken a two-day outdoor first-aid course every three years. For 25 years I ran successfully over 250 holidays but I had to deal with two heart attacks. The type of help you give the casualty during the first few minutes is very important and calling for an ambulance or even rushing them to the nearest A & E on its own is not good enough.

Thanks a million... The camera settings at 8 mins are what I needed help with. I had worked out some of them myself but yours is a great list with all important explanations of your reasoning. Shoot with post production in mind seems to be a modern discipline to learn.

Thanks Dave for your comments, it is good to learn that my programme has been helpful. Because we can adjust images in post-production, having an idea of the next stage before the shot is taken, whatever that may be, is very important.

Hi Derek Only recently discovered your channel mainly due to my considering retaining my MFT gear in tandem with a newly acquired, but MUCH heavier Fuji system. The thing that made me want to comment, was your comment about the "Golden Hour" I agree it seems it is a comment made by photographers who only have experienced a landscape by looking at others photos! Thanks so much for the many hours of future viewing and look forward to learning with much pleasure 😁
@DerekForss
@DerekForss Год назад
Hello Steve. Unfortunately, the 'Golden Hour' has become an unfortunate cliche for landscape photography. I was recently with a publisher and talking in general she said, 'I will shout and scream next time I get a portfolio of landscape shots taken during the Golden Hour'. And then she added with a twinkle in her eye 'Do they go back to bed in-between?' The true hallmark of a landscape photographer is to take excellent images throughout the day and in all weathers and not just the bits at the end and that is what she wanted to see. All good wishes, hope you will continue to enjoy seeing my programmes. A new one each Friday at 6pm BST.

And we could add is the only way to photograph a jetty or pier is with a 10 stop filter and in moody black and white? I have to admit I was seduced into seeking this type of view 😏

Beautiful video and stills Derek. Most enjoyable. I love going out with my 12-100 unencumbered with tripod. Derek do you have BBF set up at all in camera or on the LnFn button on the lens. Do you manual focus at all or autofocus most times? Thanks in advance.
@DerekForss
@DerekForss 5 лет назад
My working methods are traditional. M4/3 gives more depth-of-field than larger sensor formats without sacrificing differential focussing. I tend to start with autofocus, but change to aperture priority as required and manually focus with the technique known as hyperfocal distance, usually 50 feet in at f8 or 11 on wide-angle, as depth-of-field extends twice as much behind the point of focus as in front. A couple of my RU-vid Photo-soundbites explains this in more detail.

Derek, your videos are simply outstanding -- great photos and even better story-telling. One thing I will suggest is that you work with improving the audio quality. I give it currently a B+ grade since I've noticed some clipping now and then when you get too excited. A good setup would be a setup like this: 1. Audix OM-2 dynamic microphone 2. USB audio card from Roland or Focusrite It sounds like you're using a condenser mic (I hate all of them). In the meantime I would suggest using some sort of screen which may help clipping. The best setup would add 3. A mixer with 4 knob parametric EQ 4. dbx analog compressor. A better setup would allow you to inject even more emotion in your stories without clipping. Again, thanks for the vids. BTW, I think your voice would work well for some types of audio books as well -- the tonal quality is pleasing and excellent.
@DerekForss
@DerekForss 5 лет назад
Thank you for your detailed comments about my videos. I used to work for EMI Records in their marketing department and sympathise with much of what you say about the sound, but I don't think the finance would justify the means. Most of my audience are interested in photographs and not incidentally endless shots of me wittering away for minutes to a video camera as you so often find. You are not the first to comment about my voice, but I don't think reading audio books is my scene. If an organisation is willing to sponsor my work with a production that would be technically beyond my expertise and finance, then a dedicated recording studio for at least the voice-over would then be appropriate . Thank you again for your comments.

Derek, Thank your for your excellent skills and specific hints to photographers for producing professional results. You definitely have me investigating a shift to an Olympus mirrorless system. Has anyone indicated that some of your scenic images have a tendency to be unnatural because of over saturation?
@DerekForss
@DerekForss 6 лет назад
Thank you for your comments. I unashamedly prefer well saturated colours, but whatever I do, I am at the mercy of different computers. We have at least six computers at home, some Windows, others AppleMac, some old, some new, but my programmes all look different on each computer.

Great video! Thank you, does the em1-m2 allow to shoot in aspect ratio of 3:2 instead of the native 4:2? If so are their any consequences of doing that i.e. loss of pixels or decrease in sharpness? I love the m4/3 system but I don’t really like the native aspect ratio. Thank you.
@DerekForss
@DerekForss 5 лет назад
There are several options to change the Aspect Ratio in the Super Control Panel. If saving to RAW, the entire image ratio is recorded and when played back a border is shown showing the aspect ratio chosen. There is a loss of pixels when saving to JPEG as imposed by the aspect ratio. I prefer to shoot everything 4:3 and crop when necessary in Photoshop, which is what I do for RU-vid productions requiring 16:9. I am not aware of any decrease in sharpness.

Derek, do you think the new OMD-E-M1 Mk2 is better than the Mk1, and is it in your opinion worth upgrading, Thanks
@DerekForss
@DerekForss 6 лет назад
Colin, I do not feel technically qualified to offer an informed opinion, as I say at the end of the programme, I am a 'doer'! I have both cameras using the Mk1 as a backup. The Mk2 has been on sale for nearly two years and I would anticipate an upgrade by the end of next year, but I don't know! The Mk2 has come down a bit in price recently and if it comes down further, then I would imagine that a Mk3 is not far away. Rumour has it that the E-M5 and PEN-F will be upgraded this autumn.

Many thanks Derek! I have the 14-150, and currently exploring an upgrade. I’m using the OM-D MK 5 II. Do you think the 12-100 may be too big for this camera body?
@DerekForss
@DerekForss 5 лет назад
Currently I do not have an E-M5. The 12-100 is certainly a bit heavy, but is fine on the E-M1. I would try and handle it in a shop first using your camera before your buy. Either way, it is a fantastic lens.
