While we were in St. Louis, two of our bullsnakes laid eggs unexpectedly! One clutch looks pretty good, but the other... Well, we're not getting our hopes up for those...

I found it really interesting that the eggs that seemed to survive being on the cool end were the ones that were still stuck together, seemingly confirming that being stuck together spreads out warmth

Tips for preventing spread of mold 1) don’t reuse the moss, you’ll just add spores and fungus gnats back into the clutch 2) practice bio security between eggs. Don’t mark them first if they’re moldy, and when marking moldy ones go from least to most moldy 3) consider a single use stamp for clutches, where you use it to mark one clutch and then sterilize it before use on another clutch. You can put out a small amount of ink into a container and use that instead of a pad 4) don’t dry wipe them, use a paper towel that’s slightly damp or spray them before wiping. This prevents spores from being disturbed and flung onto other eggs 5) have small tubs for moldy eggs to separate them. You can still label what clutch, but you don’t have the chance of it spreading to other eggs if they look good
@TheCrazyOrange

I hope Emily & Ed are willing to test run if these tips help any for their clutches! I especially feel like the reuse of moss after the gnats could possibly spread the eggs more
@xNagisaChan
@xNagisaChan 2 года назад
From what I've seen from their previous years, even if super moldy eggs are directly attached to thriving eggs, the mold will not spread so long as the other egg is otherwise healthy. I did think the moss with the maggots on them was a bit iffy though.
@gd2234_
@gd2234_ 2 года назад
@@xNagisaChan I’m of the opinion “why take the chance.” Thankfully snake eggs are resistant to mold when healthy, but in the case they experienced, id be putting them aside in a different tub to ensure as many healthy ones as possible make it.
@katherynedarrah4245
@katherynedarrah4245 2 года назад
I've never found any of these to help/hinder eggs. Even the "don't reuse moss" one. Also, find me a stamp that can mark eggs and be reliably sanitized that doesn't cost $400 and I'm sure it'll catch on in the hobby. No stamp small enough can be reliably sanitized without costing an arm and a leg. Also the foot powder/jock itch powder is more effective than the "separate bin" method.

I mean they aren't lives it's just a single cell organism that has the potential for life. Just an important distinction to make here. I do agree the staff should be trained, however we don't know how much was the staff vs how much it was just a bad clutch of eggs that could've ended up with the same result with Emily and Ed even being there. Things happen that are simply out of our control. It's just not right to pin it on the staff when it's not known for sure. Could there have been more moisture and aeration. Sure, but it doesn't mean those factors alone are what caused this.

@houndgirl7365
@houndgirl7365 2 года назад
@@amandamimic2725 no because life is at first breath. It's technically a single cell organism that's the definition of what an egg is. Just because they are fertilized does not mean they end up making it to hatching. There are plenty of baby snakes that fully develope, but just do not make it thus 'potential for life' a fertilized egg is not a life until it hatches. I kind of correlate it to fetuses in that respect.

Considering that the snakes in the zoo are showing so much breeding behavior and that unexpected things seem to happen every time you guys are away, maybe it would be a good idea to give a crash course on incubating snake eggs to all of your staff. Just have them all come in early before opening one day or on a day that you’re closed and give them a class on it. Doesn’t have to be super detailed, just giving them all the basics. That way no matter what happens while you guys are away, there’s always someone there who can collect the eggs and put them in incubation safely until you guys get back to film the clutch. Seems like such a shame that those eggs might not make it do to some miscommunication. 😕 Both Shakira’s and Priscilla’s clutches have so much potential to be absolutely amazing, if they make it. Best of luck to those eggies!

Mmmmmmkay so to the handful of comments suggesting an egg incubation crash course... If everything is already so busy and hectic with breeding season, the facility (both zoo and shop), being generous and looking out for a friend's reptiles when they have medical emergencies (who has hopefully gotten better... haven't watched in a while so if there was an update IDK ok), AND still providing RU-vid content to name a few, we really need to give EVERYONE here some grace. All of this is part of the learning process. Emily and Ed are some of the most invested people in what they do, and I know they have ALREADY done the proper prep work in training. I sincerely believe this. There are so many other factors we're not considering here: maybe a lot of Priscilla's eggs were sluggy anyways which is why they were quick to mold, the staff member is relatively new and didn't expect to need to do this so soon and thus they panicked, or the miscommunication that happened was truly legitimate and emphasized with the panic of trying to do what was best ASAP. We all seem to forget that we're human and that we make mistakes, but we're so quick to try and put the blame on someone. Why can't we just accept it was bad luck? It has happened before on this channel and the biology won't go off and perfect itself so this doesn't happen again. Trust Emily and Ed, as they know their business and staff better than basically (maybe staff watch, which you maybe haven't considered) any of us commenting here. Let them do what they need to do to address the issue, and let's appreciate that they took the time to use this as an educational opportunity. TL;DR: Please stop trying to tell those who know their situation best what to do. Let's just appreciate the awesome content and give everyone some grace for doing what they could. -- Thank you, Emily and Ed, for continuing to be transparent with everything you do on this channel after all these years. Sending all the love and good juju to both of you, your staff, and the eggs this breeding season ♥

“Aw! You’re gonna make Pluto the dead one?” “Pluto’s gonna be the test one!” “Because it’s not a real planet?” Why does that still sort of hurt? Pluto’s been classified as a dwarf planet for over 15 years now, for crying out loud! Also a fun switch from trying to draw the actual planets could be to draw their astrological symbols. They’re a bit more obscure, but they look cool.

I think people are forgetting that when you two were doing this on your own there was a much tighter control on what was happening. The bigger and operation gets, the more hands you add to it, the more likely mistakes like this will happen. Yes they are avoidable, but if you look at probability, its gonna happen eventually. Even the greatest waiter in the world will eventually drop a plate or spill a drink. I'm sure you guys are handling it, and even though I can tell you are sad you still are very kind and understanding people.

Knowing an egg needs to be kept warm IS common sense. Preschoolers know that eggs need to be kept warm.
@amybarratt4227
@amybarratt4227 2 года назад
@@studio_farrago We don't know what the ambient temperature is in the facility. Different eggs need different temps. Some eggs are fine in 75-80, while others need more. Warm is not an exact temperature. If they get too hot, it is just as bad for them. They incubate too fast and the babies hatch too early and end up having kinks and underdeveloped bodies with internal organs hanging out. Why is everyone in the comments suddenly an experienced reptile breeder?? Geez, leave the employees alone. I'm sure they learned from this, and at least a developed animal's life wasn't destroyed. It was just some eggs. They can always make more next year. I'm guessing a lot of people are upset here because they were on the waitlist for the eggs. In this case, there are hundreds of good breeders trying to sell their snakes. You don't NEED a snake from Emily and Ed. It's a privilege but unnecessary.
