Hey every one! Thanks for hanging out with me while I tortured myself with bad games on my twitch. If you want to hang out in the future, come give a follow! www.twitch.tv/jarek4gamingdragon
The thing about the swastikas in WW2 games is a "banned in Germany" issue, which until recently meant that Germany didn't see video games as artistic work, so swastikas weren't allowed in them as a result.
Thx for the explanation, I wanted to give that just now. It really sucks tho, if you play a Russian soldier capturing Berlin, some flags with a simple 'x' don't really create the right atmosphere.
They weren't just banned in Germany. As a child in the uk in the 1980s, I had to make inaccurate model aircraft, because you'd get a red band with a white circle in the middle and that was it. It was frustrating, but even to me as a child I understood that there were still holocaust survivors and there still are. But americans have kindly proven why we do that in actual legal fact. It's in order to not get people standing under statues of racists with Tiki Torches chanting "The Jews will not replace us", just like the old torch parades in Europe and the US from the 1930s. That's why there are no statues of Hitler and no one has forgotten who he is. It's because Nazis use them as objects of worship or to congregate, that was why all of Hitler's homes were knocked down as well. The Germans are indeed very serious about it, but the cousins, in the usual manner have proven why that is. So because of how nazis and neo nazis use them, that's why we can't have nice things.
I'm probably in the minority of those who completed it on Hard (and that was not fun due to the lack of manual saving and having one of the longest death screens), but I absolutely agree with everything you said, it's probably for the better you stopped as things get a lot worse later on, the worst offender has to be the instant-death mechanic, with a bodycount as high as in this game that crap shouldn't even be there. I'm still intrigued by how you'll receive Vietcong, given how some of the more annoying problems from MoV exist there as well.
@@Vladiator So I went back and revisited MoV, on Normal difficulty: it took me 7 hours to complete, but I feel like I hated it even more this time around. The final set-piece is basically everything bad in one bag thrown at you without a single checkpoint. Here's a list of what they want you to get done: run up a hill full of super-accurate VC, defend both the west and east sectors on top, man an MG and fend off more of incoming waves of RPD-wielding and grenade-tossing VC then carry one of your wounded mates on your shoulder, essentially slowing you down and restricting you from selecting anything but your M4, allthewhile you get shot in the back by a fucking bush, get bombarded by airstrikes and get shot at by VC running at you up front. Yes, all this crap you have to do in one single breath, dying resets you back at the bottom of the aforementioned hill. Seriously, fuck this game.
i don't remember that this game was bad. it even had good critique in magazines. but i remember only two things: it's very hard and graphics was very good (one of the first games with pixel shaders). difficulty also was praised in media and community. it was era of hard games and many compare this game to Vietkong - another hardcore FPS about Vietnam from Mafia developers.
Difficulty is the biggest thing that kills the game. None of my deaths felt fair. Play the game again today and you'll see how horribly cheap the game is to the player.
@@Jarekthegamingdragon try Vietcong. This game have big praise at the time. Bigger then Men of Valor and it was more hardcore FPS. Close to Operation Flashpoint, Delta Force, original Ghost Recon. And it was from people who made Mafia I-II and Kingdom Come Deliverance. But also it was different time.
I wish more FPS games set in historical periods showed more footage from the era it's set in. I remember when I used to play Medal of Honor: Rising Sun and Call of Duty: Finest Hour having that and I always thought it was pretty cool.
That was because many of those games respected those time periods and tried to accurately depict them to their best ability. Now? Most big companies are afraid to accurately portray them or disrespect them. Look at Call of duty World At War For example. I doubt that game would be made now given how it depicts the Imperial Japanese military, the Nazis, and the Red Army.
Isn't that a PS2 exclusive title? Pretty sad because its the only MoH game that ended on a cliffhanger that will no doubt never get a sequel to bring closure.
@@nopushbutton That's reality I'm referring to the fact that you never really get to save your brother after his capture during the retreat from the Philippines which is what the second mission was, they tease you by showing him right there with in arms reach but not close enough where you can save him as well as the cliffhanger of your buddy (who's name I forget) saying the two of you will get him back.
Don Juan I have rising sun and frontline on Xbox loved them as a kid as well the sniper levels on frontline are still amazing. You can pick them up pretty cheep on eBay I payed around £3-£5 for each in the uk don’t know about America or Europe.
It sucks that we never got a full AAA Vietnam game. I know that one of the CoD devs wanted to do this, but Activision kept stopping it. Appreciate that this game doesn't hold back on representing the time period it is set during. Most AAA game companies are way too afraid to offend or be controversial now. Too complacent too. Black Ops 1 does have some decent Nam levels.
Can't fool me Jarek. I hear that timesplitters music in the background. I don't remember the track name, but its the track that plays on the Ice Station map from timesplitters 2. Nice choice.
That’s the thing, though - it isn’t different from the WWII shooters of the day. It’s a reskin of the exact same gameplay mechanics, tropes, and level designs, just guns and environments from 20-23 years later. Nothing about how the game plays feels like it’s set in Vietnam, like Vietcong does. It’s a remarkable conventional shooter considering it’s about an unconventional war.
I remember renting this when I was younger and couldn’t get passed the first fight because I’d die instantly. I believe I made it passed and to the point I had to throw a smoke grenade or something into a machine gun nest and the game glitched and wouldn’t progress. Good memories...
invisible enemies shooting at you, bombs dropping at random, and a turret sequence that is literally impossible to beat. I beat it and i wouldn't wish this game on my worst enemies.
Don't worry Jarek, subbed since like few months I think. I don't remember when I subbed to ya but I must say I enjoy your narration. Your voice is really nice for narration.
i have binged watched your videos on my firestick at night for the last few months. Sorry for just subscribing now. But it's official, I am now a subscriber
How about robotech invasion?? I don't know how good or bad this game was but for me this game was the best I've ever played . Would love to see you make a video about it :)
Vietcong with the patches, launcher and that HD mod that adds chromatic ab, its just fucking fantastic. It is odd that i love the tunnel rat sections? Vietcong has some of the best pacing. I love the realism when moving with your squad, very immersive.
wow i was not expecting this video! I remember my first time playing this was on a demo disk for the xbox original and it ran at 10-5 fps but it was such an imersive experiance so i kept playing. Quite a small nostalga trip from this video!
I have to say, for an 04 game, I enjoy this for what it is. However, I absolutely agree with what you say in the video. Myself, I've had the issue where I run to an objective, and then I have to restart an entire mission because one person from my team got stuck on a hill and didn't know how to get over said hill.
It's really interesting hearing about that health system, it's like a weird prototype version of Call of Duty regenerating health. But just a lot less forgiving, as you have to drop everything your doing or else that health is _gone,_ and also a lot more tedious because it needs to be activated manually.
Weird, I do remember this game coming out but I always assumed it was part of the Medal Of Honor series because of the name and the fact it was developed by 2015 Studios (Who made Allied Assault). But none of this footage is recognisable so maybe I got it confused with Pacific Assault. There were definitely a lot of war-based shooters back then.
The newsreel cutscenes before each mission are actually kind of nice. A lot of the people at the stream seemed annoyed by it but it’s kinda nice having them. It gives context and makes it clear that this or that event happened - watching computer generated GIs fighting in the jungle is one thing, watching real-life GIs do it is another. IMO it adds to the immersion. The narration isn’t the best but it gives a bare-bones summary of the events to people who don’t really know that much. Other than that, I’d have to agree that it seemed awful. Which is a shame since it seemed like it had a lot of potential
The other thing about the critics is the Men of Valor soundtrack. They put money into licensing the music from that time. Since the Vietnam War has the best sound track in the history of warfare, this is something that is worthwhile. It can't save a game by itself, but the critics I think emphasise this kind of thing more than the ordinary gamer.
I bought it and I had a similar experience. But I still don't regret it because I thought the mechanics were interesting. It was worth a short playthrough just as a study and I'd love to see some of those mechanics in a better game. Or at least I would, if I wasn't already burned out on shooters.
This unlocked a memory I'd forgotten about 😂 Had this on the original xbox, I remember enjoying it at the time but it's was haaaard, never finished it lol
I'd like to see you review Medal of honor rising sun i felt like this game for me was great as a kid but i played it recently and looking back i can see some flaws that i think everyone should know about
Was anyone else excited for the release of this game in 2004? This was years before 2007's "Modern Warfare" finally convinced publishers to quit pushing cookie-cutter WWII shooters, so at the time we were utterly awash in generic WWII shooters. All I wanted was a war game with reasonably non-prehistoric guns, and the Vietnam War seemed close enough. Unfortunately, "Men of Valor" wasn't close to good.
This game was THAT unknown? I mean, it was on the cover of an OXM (Official Xbox Magazine) issue, or at least the demo disc for it. I remember it vividly on that.
I've been meaning to suggest it for a while, but Bet On Soldier is something I've been morbidly curious about for over a decade. It was bundled with some GPUs way back in like 2006, and from what I've seen, it's bad, but in an endearing way.
Given this game is from the same developer (maybe not necessarily the same TEAM per-se but what do I know) as MoH: Allied Assault...ouch. What happened lol
My bro and I had fun playing this game a memeing on it, we loved the banter between AI and cinematic dialogue because it was hilarious. I just wished that Allies didn't have the accuracy of a sneeze because the Vietcong had sniper assault rifles XD.
Hello Jarek I really like your reviews and I would like to see you analyzing an old game called "Chameleon" made by Silver Wish Games on 2005. I was stunned the first time I played it. I wonder if you will like it and get amazed as I did. Thanks in advance.
It's a hard game...and you died sometimes so damn quick, and no matter where you are, the mission starts over. I got to the ruined church in a field and Charlie was attacking from every angle and I had no idea what to do. Lol
Played this game like crazy with my dad on the weekends when I was 9. 1v1 sniping on split screen and no screen surfing til we couldn't stay awake lol! I loved the game but hated how ridiculously hard it was to beat and there wasn't A.D.S.
I loved the football level as a kid because when you got the football the camp basically almost gets shelled and you hide, causing the attitude to shift. Then you can just chuck the football at everyone’s head and be a dick lmao
I'll give it this. The bleed out mechanic was unique and I don't remember seeing it in any other game. Whether that's good or not is up for debate. Also props for the games soundtrack, its not often you hear Eve of Destruction in a game.
Can someone somehow get the combat music from this game? I've been looking for a while and have been unable to extract the combat music from the game, and before you say "Look in the ogg folder" I've already done that. they're not all there. Seriously, ive checked. there's like 7 of the actual in game music and the rest of the licensed tracks in there, yet all the other music is not there. I've also tried several programs, none of which worked. If literally anyone can help please do.
I thought about this game the other day. I had a subscription to xbox magazine which came with demos. I remember playing the demo and thinking holy shit im in Vietnam. Its was kinda hardcore for its time
That healing system reminds me of a much shitter version of Bloodborne's Rally system. When you take a hit in that game which doesn't kill you you'll loose health, but a portion of it will be a faded red (this still happens if you die), this is health that you can recover without needing to use a Blood Vial, so how do you regain this health? Simple, by attacking the enemy and dealing melee damage (which goes along with Bloodborne's aggressive combat), it'll go away pretty quickly if you ignore it. Not all weapons are equal in terms of their rally potential, the two whip weapons (the Threaded Cane and Beast Cutter) don't have it as strong due to being able to hit multiple enemies with ease (the Beast Cutter in particular when transformed has R1's that basically cover a 180-degree area in front of you for a considerable distance) and weapon like the Hunter Axe, Burial Blade, Kirkhammer and Whirligig Saw have better rally potential. The Guidance runes also boost this further on top of Blood Gems with the 'Lethal' effect to them (which outside of one fixed gem is always a secondary effect). Visceral Attacks fully recover any rallyable health, Visceral attacks are executed by either successfully parrying an incoming attack with your off-hand firearm (excluding the Cannon and Church Cannon and I think that Gatling Gun) or the firearm mode of the Rifle Spear or Riterpallasch (which is a rapier with an attached gun), backstabs (triggered by hitting an enemy in the back with a charged heavy attack) or by doing enough damage to certain limbs on the bigger bosses and staggering them. It makes parrying less risky as even if you get the parry but lose a lot of health from getting hit by said attack (usually at the end of when you can perform the interrupt) you can get most of your health back, this doesn't even take into consideration the Blood Rapture runes which give you a flat 200, 250 or 300 HP back depending on which version(s) you have equipped. Not all enemies can be parried or backstabbed and not all big creature bosses can be visceral attacked even if you stagger them. Though damaged limbs always take more damage, so despite not being able to Visceral the Watchdog of the Old Lords for example, it's still worthwhile to damage it's limbs. This is how you do a system like that, have it play into the game's combat, here it seems like a clunky gimmick that hurts the game rather than a mechanic that enhances the combat. So this idea can work, it's just horribly executed here, then again the FPS don't really seem like a good genre for this type of healing system.
Jarek, how old are you and at what age did you go bald. My brother is 24 and he's started balding after freshman year (09/10) and went completely bald by 2014
