What I really like about Bioshock 2 (aside from improved gameplay mechanics) is that the ending isn't solely based on the player's trreatment of the Little Sisters like it was in the first game. You're playing as someone (or something) created specifically to PROTECT the Little Sisters, so unless you want to get the worst possible ending, it doesn't make sense to kill those little girls just to get more ADAM. Also, it's pretty ironic that despite her ideology, Sofia Lamb basically turned Rapture into a hive and made herself the queen bee.

That's the spirit of bioshock 1 as well according to Ken Levine, no utopia works when people are so flawed and carry baggage with us by default. Ryan basically turned big gov when thing went out of his hand.
To me it is. I LOVED Bioshock, but 2 REALLY made me feel a lot. It was badass running around with the Big Daddy arsenal, but also the story. GOD, I really felt like a father on the way to save my daughter and it genuinely made me cry at the end.
The original saying “Blood is thicker than water” is actually “The blood of the covenant is thicker than water of the womb.” Meaning the family you choose is more important than the family you are born into.
A big retcon that comes from Burial is that they made it that Big Daddies were always around, even the more advanced Bouncer type. Apparently they were just repurposed to be protectors. The first two games and especially two make it clear that Little Sisters came first while Big Daddies were made to protect them afterwards. So many videos seem to get this wrong because they buy the horribly retconned Burial lore so I'm glad that you got it right here.
I’m just glad you can chalk that up to being the multiple timelines and that the Rapture you’re at in the first two games is a different timeline with no Elizabeth. At least that’s what I like to think.
@redraptorwrites6778 I always assumed they were originally not called Big Daddies. but did exist in that form, to do the deep sea construction and maintenance. I thought they only really started to be called Big Daddies around the same time the Little Sisters were created. But yea i agree Infinite and especially Burial At Sea are horrible, and introduced some terrible plot holes and bad retcons.
I hated 2 at launch, but after replaying it recently, it's my favorite. Dual weilding and streamlined hacking is great. Minervas Den had the best story, imo.
I loved bioshock 2 at launch and still do to this day. Comparing is hard, its like comparing alien and aliens. Two different vibes and tones. However the improved camera and hacking made b2 a lot more fun
i’ve rarely been as enveloped in a game as much as i have with bioshock 2, this game was such a fixation when i first played it and it only feels like it’s gotten better over the years
I feel like this debate can be boiled down to one sentence, "Bioshock 2 is a great game that has the misfortune of being the sequel to one of the best games to come out of the golden age of video games".
I was always a bioshock2 man. The first game never hit me as hard as others the "twists' fell flat on my first playthrough and the gameplay wasn't standout.

For me it's: 1. Bioshock 2. Bioshock 2: Minerva's Den 3. Bioshock 2 4. Bioshock Infinite: Burial At Sea 1-2 5. Bioshock Infinite I also remember that when B2 was released it received a lukewarm reception, which is sad 'cause gameplay-wise it's more fun than B1, but B1 had better story and overall it's more memorable. Love both of those games + Minerva DLC, but Infinite... well Infinite... I wish it didn't exist. It's not a bad game, love the story and the visuals, but the dumbed down COD style gameplay is not for me. Hated the weapon limit (reminded me of Duke Nukem Forever and that's not good) and how the game dragged on for too long. Overall, Bioshock is a fantastic series, Infinite is the only disappointment for me cause the more I play all of these games the more I love 1-2-Minerva, but Infinite... it's the other way around... it gets worse... still a good game, but not as good as the previous ones, that's for sure. Now would you kindly go and play System Shock Remake? It's a little bit clunky, but fun :)
I definitely remember Infinite dragging at some points too. Even when I replayed it semi recently, I found myself trying to sprint to the finish cause I was just ready to be done with it. I still liked it overall, but it didn't have the same magic that B1 and 2, B1 most of all, for me personally
I think one reason that Bioshock 2 got so much hate on launch was because they included online multiplayer. I can't say if it was good or not I never played it. However there were a lot of fans that didn't want it in Bioshock so that might explain some of the negativity.
@@docmitchell4658 Agreed. I remember thinking it was gonna be bad when B2 came out, but I was really surprised by it. It was actually pretty fun for what it offered, especially if you were a big fan of the Bioshock universe and just wanted more of it
I recently went back and played this and remembered why it was my favorite of the trilogy. People used to say that Bioshock 2 was the worst of the trilogy, but I guess they have changed their minds since then. For me, I feel like the gameplay is a big step up from the original, and I like the level design a little more too. Plus there's the Minerva's Den DLC which is pretty good too. From what I remember as a kid, I think it played Bioshock 2 way more than the others, although I still have a few playthroughs on the other 2 as well.
It is the best on the series for me, personally. Bioshock 1 might be an all time classic, but the second one is just plain fun, while maintaining a good story.
I remember the Multiplayer for this being awesome! It was always fun watching people make montage videos on this game. I was shocked hearing that the game got a bit of hate.
so about killing gilbert being considered morally bad, i believe its because if you kill him its as if youre only seeing a monster that needs to be killed (or "put out of his misery", as you said), but by sparing him you look past the dramatic " alex the great" and recognize him as a person. ignoring whatever actions he might have done, the thing is that alex, like delta or any big daddy, is pretty much a different being from his pre-mutation self, so the moral dilemma is if you can see him, and by extension any big daddy/little girl, as a person or as a monster
infinite is especially disappointing if you followed development for years, all the interesting concepts and possibilities they showed off, most of it was cut. there's no key choice moments besides the ball throw and the bird/cage, two other choices they showed off were cut. tears were cut down to the point where they're just slightly different environmental combat options. they had plans for multiversal traversal through tears and other stuff, all cut. they cut so much stuff just to finish the game, it'd be less painful if they hadn't used so much of the cut content in marketing.
1 had the better story, and was more iconic. 2 simply has better gameplay mechanics. That and 1's endings wrapped things up nicely, it didn't _need_ a sequel.
I once played through the entirety of Bioshock 2 using only the drill (outside of using the lightning plazmid for doors), and man it was a WILD ride! Launching myself at every enemy was so fun, especially in the final battle while you destroy the water tanks and have 30+ enemies after you. It felt like the church scene from Kingsmen 😁
I like the narrative and level design of the first game but the gameplay and hacking in the 2nd game is significantly better. I played System Shock 2 last year as somebody who was born in 98 so I have no prior nostalgia tied to it and I liked it quite a lot despite some of its jank due to age. I think Bioshock and System Shock 2 are pretty even, its kind of gameplay and QOL improvements versus deeper RPG elements and a more sci-fi aesthetic with in my opinion the most bad-ass antagonists in videogames in Shodan.
I played both back to back. And bioshock 2 falls in that category of sequels where the developers know that the fear of unknown is gone. So they aim for a more action focused game. Which to me is actually a really good approach. It always feels natural when games do that. Bioshock 2 is a more polished and action focused experience. They fixed nearly everything I felt was annoying or unnecessary about the first game. Mainly being the hacking mini games. But I’d be lying if I said I remember that game more than I did the first game. The first game just has soo many good moments. All which will be stuck with me for a very long time. But I barely remember anything about bioshock 2. The narrative isn’t bad in bioshock 2. But the first games narrative is soo good, it would be impossible to make one better. So gameplay wise yeah maybe bioshock 2 is better. But bioshock 1 is soo much more memorable
Commenting before watching to say that as a kid I played Bioshock 1 and 2 as they released, and the general consensus at the time was that 2 was a huge letdown somehow story-wise but everyone also praised the improved gunplay and playing as a Big Daddy. I think at the time “Would you kindly?” was still so fresh and groundbreaking that nothing the sequel did would ever have hit as hard. All that said, over the years I’ve always gone back for a yearly playthrough of both and I’ve always been a big fan of the story, I personally believe it rises nearly to the level of the original. I think both games suffer from lackluster endings, a trend that would continue with infinite (in regards to Burial at Sea imo taking things a step too far in retconning aspects of the canon).
Never got why the story in 2 is considered worse than that of 1, but I'd guess getting the tweeeest spoiled plus the overwhelming praise made me approach it with expectations that didn't help. Might be unfair to see it as just an interactive Shyamaladingdong movie, but that's all it is to me - besides an introduction to an inspired setting. 2 on the other hand - no spoilers, no expectations and it just worked. Curious if that's a common experience among those of us who think 2 isn't just better as a game but also a better told story. After the first playthrough Ellies scream in the intro gets me every time on replays. Kinda wish the tactical options had gotten at least some spotlight in this review. Whether it's a fight against other Daddies, Big Sisters or the harvesting minigame, you have a chance to prepare an arena before the chaos starts. Makes a bigger difference than the more immediate gameplay changes like dual wielding plasmid plus weapon in my opinion.
Lamb was pretty lame compared to Fontaine and Ryan as far as the story/protagonist. Having the story ruined before playing 1 took a lot of the thunder out for sure which influenced you while playing. Minerva's Den basically saves Bioshock 2 from just being Bioshock 1 with better gameplay and a meh story imo. Without that DLC Bioshock 2 isn't much better than Infinite.
@@Jrock420blami agree with lamb being lame when compared to Fontaine my only complaint with bioshock 2 was the ending was anti climatic when i first played back then i was expecting a boss fight similar to bioshock 1 i was disappointed that the “boss fight” was just waves of enemies thrown at you plus by the time you get towards the end your so overpowered with upgrades that the enemies don’t really present a challenge at all
I like 1 & 2 equally, I replay them back to back when I get that Bioshock itch. I always thought 2 got way too much shit even as a diehard Bioshock 1 fan. And Minerva's Den is like top 3 DLCs ever made
The video camera is a genius mechanic that gives players an incentive to experiment how to kill different enemies. If you kill then with different weapons, ammo and plasmids, you earn more xp to unlock perks against them while at the same time learning their weaknesses.
@@Jarekthegamingdragon What? No, Eternal was definitely not encouraging that with its combat system. Why should I experiment when I can just use a grenade to practically one-shot a caco or use the shotgun grenade launcher/assault rifle focus shot to auto-cripple an arachnotron? It was designed to be played a certain way and the devs even said that. That's not experimentation, that's rock paper scissors.
This makes me glad I played all of them on console. Bugs that were there were minor and would go away after like 30 minutes and it never crashed a single time.
Bioshock 2 is my least favorite of the three but its still pretty great. I have beat it around 3 or 4 times. I just got tired of defending little sisters. It also felt like the exploration wasn't as good. It didn't feel like they tried hiding Tonics and stuff as well. I enjoyed looking for them in the first game.
While I loved the first one, the second was more fun to play. The combos of plasmids with weapons are neat. Apart the main game, the multiplayer is very fun.
I've only played each game once but will say that Bioshock 2 is definitely more fun to play and gets the edge for gameplay over the first game. Story, tho is quite hard for me as i really did enjoy both and think I need another playthrough to decide properly
After playing all 3 back to back I'd have to say 2 is my favorite but I think that again came down to its feel being better then the first and the fact it was still at rapture. All in all great games tho
One thing the Remaster did was fix the physics being locked to 30 in BS2. There's no unlocker for the original BS2 like there is for BS1 whereas the remaster has a higher fps cap on physics. Not worth sound and lighting tradeoff but still worth mentioning.

You know I really loved using Cyclone Trap especially once it hit level 3 since you could begin to send splicers flying around the place in a rube goldberg like series of traps
I still own and play the GWFL version of Bioshock 2. Plays well, but it is a pain in the ass to get running on a modern system. Bioshock 2 is my favorite of the series, and yeah, I even enjoyed the multiplayer. It wasn't necessary but it was quite unique and fun.
Minerva’s Den is one of the best DLC contents ever made imo, so I’m looking forward to that. Though I’m more interested in seeing you cover Infinite. Holy crap, if you thought people had strong opinions on the first two games, you haven’t seen anything yet. Personally, I find it to be a game that, opposite to Bioshock 2, gets worse with age.
It's fun seeing how different people use plasmids, I always stick with incinerate and Anti Personnel rounds for the chain gun for a complete run and gun play style so I take as many out before reloading
I'm one of those people who didn't play Bioshock games until like ten years after release. Went in totally blind and found myself liking Bioshock 2 the best. Then I played System Shock enhanced edition a year or two later. System Shock seemed like it had deeper mechanics with all the patches and ammo types oh and the variety in minigames. Bioshock just had those annoying "flow" puzzles
Question -- What is the best way to play Bioshock 1 and 2 on PC here in 2024? I've got the itch to return to Rapture, especially to reexperience these gems on the Steam Deck, but after watching videos comparing the OGs to the remastered versions, it looks like the OGs look better in almost every way except a few. I only see the remastered versions for sale on Steam, but is there a way to play the OGs on PC, or are we just stuck with the inferior remastered versions?
Might be late for response, but if you buy bishock remastered, you will also get the original game. Same applies for bioshock 2. The bioshock collection also includes both the original and remastered version.

Man I'll never forget my cousin showing me those first couple Bioshock trailers back in like 2005/2006. I was immediately sold. Picked it up and completely fell in love with the world, story and atmosphere. Then the 2nd one came out and for some reason, it just didn't hit as hard for me. I'll have to go back and give it another try now tho since it's been years. I just wish there was a better/easier way to play the OG versions. The "remastered" versions somehow look worse lol
BioShock 1 has a better environment just by the nature of it being the first game. Rapture is fresh to the player. I think it also has better player movement (mainly because you can stack two athlete plasmids and turn the entire game into doom). BioShock 2 on the other hand has far better gameplay. Dual-wield, more interesting plasmid upgrades (fully upgraded telekinesis, my beloved) recording enemies instead of having to spam pictures on every enemy you fight. Better weapon balance as well, electric gel was so busted for big daddy fights in the first game, especially when you were able to double the amount of ammo when crafting
People already hating on “Judas”based off a trailer.. Too many kids grew up to be media snobs that never tried game design personally. Wish there was more respect for hard work.
Bioshock 1 and 2 are like Star Wars and Star Trek but flipped. On the surface they seem to be similar in story, if you only focus on the city that is, but at the end of the day one is more about the mind while one is more about the heart. Ironically with TV and movies it seems people care more about the emotions they invoke while in games it is more about the mind.
I'd say Bioshock 1 and 2 are like two sides of the same coin. They take place in the same location with similar gameplay but focus on ideologically and atmospherically opposite sides. 1 was all about the city of Rapture as this great and terrible place that sucks you in, while 2 has you take part as a familiar part of Rapture's world, instead focusing on the people and tragedy the city left them in. While 2 doesn't make the same impact as 1, it was never trying to, instead wanting to refine and expand on what was already there. The games complement each other, helping the world of Rapture be more complete than if only one game existed alone.
I'm glad you touched on the abysmal port of BioShock 2 remastered. I started it last year and got about 8 hours in and it would literally crash every 2 minutes. I'll check out the fix you mentioned because I was enjoying it. I think the combat is vastly better than the first game but not much else
Harvesting angels with the litle sisters is entirely optional, you can just get them to a vent and save them. The game doesn't tell you this, but it's something that i tried myself, and it worked. I was playing on a playstation 3
Bioshock 2 is my favorite in the series. It improved a lot of things and the story was more straightforward. People were just expecting a plot twist like the first game.
I think the game had a bit of a renaissance, due in part to the late, great Totalbiscuit. Back in the day, he would constantly praise this game, over the other Bioshock titles. I think this made people come back to the game, knowing what to expect, and really enjoying the experience.
Its a mixed bag. 2 did some things welll but I think the story in the original outshines the second. I literally ran through both within a 24 period yesterday, and the second one really was a lot of white noise when i was going through it. I didnt realize how much Lamb tried to be another Ryan and she just never hit those highs. Gameplay is definetly more polished in 2, though. So, while the story is weaker. I like the additions to the core gameplay loop.
i can't remember each game distinctly but i do have this to say oh my god, drill specialist my beloved the drill lunge is just so fun and launching bozos is amazing
still disappointed with the mess that ended up being Bioshock 2 compared to 1 but im glad you enjoyed it for what it is. I will say Minerva Den was good though, Bioshock 2 story was just too garbage for me to fully enjoy the improvements they were able to make from the first
I still prefer Bioshock 1. I think people tend to exagerate Bioshock 2's gameplay improvements. Meanwhile, storywise Bioshock 1 is infinitely better than 2.
I legit thought Bioshock 2 was better than 1 when it came out and still feel that way. I'd actually argue the story is better too. The story has no big twist but it's more emotionally resonant.
I have a very specific memory of walking up a staircase in bioshock 2 and a splicer just yesterday an oil barrel down it, lighting me ablaze and killing me instantly. I screamed "holy Morgan freeman fuck, eat a trillion dicks" as I turned my ps3 off. I then went downstairs to my mom who had never heard me video game rage because it's not something I do often and she just asked if I was ok lol. Then I tried to explain what happened and realized how silly I sounded, then dug back in because I was renting from blockbuster over the weekend and the game ain't gonna finish itself
I just played the trilogy for the first time over the past few weeks and I've got to say without being influenced by nostalgia or anything, that Bioshock 2 was the best of the bunch.
The combat in 2 is better than the first, the story not so much. However the DLC for Bioshock 2 "Minerva's Den" was better than the main game of Bioshock 2 and up there with Bioshock 1 (maybe even better). However this is only my opinion. Also Bioshock IS NOT AN IMMERSIVE SIM (and that is fine). I don't see why people even try to call it one, and I have seen people call it that. The only options you have in the game is good or bad ending and 'how will you kill this enemy." Edit : I would recommend you try the Bioshock 2 DLC. Ahh, OK you mention your playing it next. Good. It comes highly recommended by me.
@@Jrock420blamThere's a RU-vidr who can be really cool or really damn stupid. I like some of what he does and other times I laugh. He always keeps trying to ask the question "is X an immersive sim" and I find that really stupid. He keeps saying BioShock is an immersive sim and then goes on to say infinite is 'somewhat' of an immersive sim, it's like they play very similar and both have no element of choice or how you want to handle something. I mean he made a video asking is Metal Gear Solid 5 is an immersive sim (lol) but when I think about it MGS5 allows you so many more options about how to go about the thing you are doing than BioShock ever does, and on top of that he missed a majority of the stuff you can even do in MGS5 cause he didn't think outside of the box.
A bold question to raise... I love the bioshock 1 & 2 experience. My favorite single player experience ever and i actually consider them 1 game more like a double album. ... As standalone games though, on ps3 which is how i owned them (although i did play Bioshock 1 on 360), imho, Bioshock 2 is superior and more fun in everyway except story because its more bioshock 1 lore rather than ANOTHER stand alone Bioshock experience. That was iNFiNiTE and iT failed but thats besides the point . That moment you first discover Rapture and the following 30 mins of walking around i will cherish as a gamer forever. That game gave so much to me on several levels. But yes, the multiplayer in 2 is outstanding. An id rather play as Alpha all day every day. ... I wish i could go to a thriving version of Rapture when i die.
I didn't vote in the Bioshock vs System Shock 2 poll because I haven't played System Shock 2. If I had a computer I would totally play though. I like Prey 2017 and Dishonored. I don't know that those two games come close to System Shock 2 but I would at least try it.
Last time i tried to play Bioshock 2 Remastered, the sprite for light coming from the flying drone was a huge square for some reason. Reinstalling did nothing. So, yeah, that remaster was HL Source level of crap.
Bioshock 1 maybe had better story but i absolutely loved Bioshock 2's ending, especially the good and sad endings, they actually made me emotional, which very few games ever succeeded.
Imo story wise bioshock 1 has the better story, lore and characters. But the gameplay and the overall feel of the game are better in 2. + Minerva’s den is so good ( its story being even better than 1’s imo).
