As most Mormons are just now beginning to learn, Joseph Smith left multiple and varied First Vision accounts that changed dramatically over time. Joseph Smith's 1st handwritten First Vision account was produced in 1832, and was intentionally hidden from LDS Church members for over a century and a half - primarily because of the many problems it presented to orthodox belief. The "official" First Vision account that the LDS Church ended up adopting is the 1838 version, which varies in several significant ways from the previous versions - primarily reflecting Joseph Smith's evolving theological beliefs.
Join us today as John Larsen analyzes Joseph Smith's FIRST (1832) handwritten First Vision account, and explores the many difficulties this version presents to modern Mormon faith.

@@Baseballisbest67 His Genius = Critical thinking, an ability that the Church purposely does not develop in its members. I love it when John Larson points out the bootstrap problem with the church; he details the circular reasoning, and then goes beyond it even deeper. He explains that the truthfulness of the church depends on Joseph Smith being a prophet and Joseph Smith is a prophet because the church is true. Larson says, "The real sinister thing- the real indoctrination always happens one level below what you're recognizing, because what what you're doing is you're debating whether or not Joseph Smith was a prophet, you're not debating whether or not there's any such thing as a prophet at all."

Ok, so I have a different, personal perspective on the issues of Mormon men being married that are gay. I endured my own hell by being married to one who was living a secret life. He was a temple worker AND high conselman. No one tells our story. The abuse we endured by our husband's and church leaders, who were defending the priesthood in our home, is unexplainable. I think it's time for our story to be told.

As a fourth great grandson of Hyrum Smith I attended a family reunion of the Joseph Smith Sr. Family. This was about 1980. It was held in Provo, UT. The whole family that was attending toured the Wilford Wood museum in Woods Cross in small groups. It was packed with historical artifacts. Brother Wood's widow showed us many things including the original death masks of Joseph and Hyrum which are now in the hands of the church history dept. It was a memorable experience being at the reunion along with being around Patriarch Eldred G. Smith, and hearing his thoughts on the family history.

All of us who have spent years or decades in Mormonism and have left need podcasts like this. Passion is important. Great specifics here, and the reasoning for the current canonized version of the First Vision in the 1870's to replace the Adam-God Doctrine makes sense to me. I loved the use of the Hinkley quote as this logically in accordance with the facts makes the case clear that the key foundational story is complete BS.

Speak like an adult, not a toddler) stand up to bigotry, racism and hypocritical rhetoric and behaviour. If the Church were 'true' it would be able to stand up to rightful criticism and actually say, 'We were wrong here, here, here, and here. It destroyed lives and is continuing to do so, here's what we're going to do to fix it'. Because that's what ADULTS do, how ADULTS speak, and how ADULTS make amends. They don't hide behind billions of dollars while continuing to tear lives, families and careers apart. Critical thinking is a skill, and I would recommend that you start the steps to develop it.

@@rocktheboatpaul I don’t think this is true at all. I’m in Utah and most adults in our ward have already taken the vaccine. Everyone wore masks at Church and other indoor places. 47:53 This is one of the great quotes that the church used to shoot itself in the foot when I was going down the rabbit hole. There are other ones like this and Hinckley is the author of many of them but this one is definitely accurate. If they claim that if you can find something wrong with the book of Mormon or the first vision that they are not what they claim to be in the rest of everything must fall. So why even bother about the word of wisdom or temples or polygamy or tithing money or being LGBTQ at BYU. The thing is, the first vision and the book of Mormon did not happen like we were taught and like we taught as missionaries - everything else is obsolete.

Not everyone has to believe like you to be on higher moral ground and a good kind genuine person. About the money stuff up front ... the church REQUIRES 10% from members and then put out this vibe like it's "priestcraft" for people to get paid when discussing spiritual things. That is such orwellian double think. Content creators deserve compensation even if ,like John Larsen said, the delivery of that content is free. The content delivery might be free but content creation certainly cannot be. The business model for content creation is wonky right now, and it's got to be awkward to discuss it on air like that, but I don't know what choice content creators have. Kudos to these guys for being realistic and so transparent with the audience about the realistic financial needs of their enterprise.

Bring it on! Don't hold any punches when telling the truth - please, no soft pedaling in Mormon Stories Podcast. As John Larsen said, the church couches and veils their messages in "metaphor and code" and I don't think we need any more of that! Thanks for a great discussion of the first vision.

I often wonder if when websites like Mormon Expression (or even technical difficulties like when a podcast suddenly cuts out for no obvious reason), if there are actors at work who are doing these things in support of the church. As we know that the church has significant financial resources, its possible that a campaign of "defense" or "protection" is implemented, or perhaps supporters of the church who are fervent but not actually working for the church directly. Again, just pondering.

You guys are awesome! I DO HAVE A SUBJECT THAT I WOULD LIKE JOHN TO ADDRESS. Maybe he has already. Joseph Smith and the Smith family were connected with the Masons like so many people. In my opinion there is no way Joseph could do this by himself. And there was a reason he was yelling Masonic codes at his assassination. Could the Mormon church be a deliberate project of the Masons? I just can’t see this possible that J Smith did this all on his own. ALSO the restructuring of the Church after the US Army came to Utah. In every US settlement in the west there is a saloon, brothel, sheriff with jail, and a Masonic lodge. Love you guys! ALSO, I would like to see a linguistic approach for critiquing the BoM. Where is there any linguistic or literary evidence of Hebrew or Reformed Hieroglyphs in the Americas? LOVE you guys! I will be more actively supporting your work. I served my mission with Vânia in Rio de Janeiro in the early 90’s. We should talk.

@John Larsen Thank you so much for your response. I sent it to my faithful Mormon sister who agonizes over sometimes taking her garments off when it's 120 and she's miserable. She said she's going with your interpretation of the new question and feels better about it now.🤣 Thanks ❤️

Garments are still mandatory but people can and will push the limit and still go to the temple. I know a couple of men who had affairs and still went to the temple. They lied to themselves, their wives and their families. The Lord knows all. I would not want to be them when it’s time to meet the Savior.

I am a never Mormon. At 35:00 where garments were discussed… I had interesting conversations with an LDS colleague way back in 1981. He explained to me how would bathe without ever removing his garments. He’d sit in a bathtub with one foot hanging out with his garments hanging from his ankle. It was interesting to say the least!
