Anatomy of a Playback Rig

Within the last few years, running live playback has become a huge part of the job of drummers everywhere. Modern music often contains a myriad of production elements that are difficult or sometimes impossible to recreate live. So, demand has risen drastically for people who can make these elements happen, especially on a budget.
In this video, I'll show you what a current build of a playback rig that I've built looks like. (Stay tuned until the end to see how the rig has evolved in a matter of weeks!). It's important to keep in mind that there are a myriad of different ways and components with which to build a playback rig; it all just depends on what you want yours to do.
This video also features a brief performance section where I play along to some of the backing tracks of one of the artists I perform with. At request, the following is the gear that I used to record that section:
MOTU 8Pre
Audix D6
Audix D2 (x2)
Audix D4
AKG SE-310
AKG C214 (x2)
Logic
If you have any questions or would like me to design a playback session/playback rig for you, feel free to comment below or e-mail me at downs.eric@gmail.com.

Eric Downs I'm a singer and producer and my goal is to have a rig that controls sound, lights, video and pyrotechnics (although I'm still deciding on this one). So: 1. What are the types of software applications and interfaces (lighting!!) that I'd need? And how do I sync each software application with one another and how do I program/automate everything so I'll be able to put on an amazing and complete performance without a huge crew (starting musician, yay, haha)? I'd like to do it in a way that I press a trigger and it'll start and go through the whole performance without having to worry about anything else, is that even possible? 2. I'm aware that there are some companies that make these rigs with software applications that allow you to go from one song to the next and even alter the track order on the setlist easily, how does that work? Note: thank you so much for this and thank you for replying so quickly. I'll be waiting for your next videos... This information is not available anywhere else.
@eldowns
@eldowns 5 лет назад
The program I use most for lighting and other DMX-based effects (haze, maybe pyro?) is DMXis. It requires a little $276-box that connects to your computer via USB and syncs perfectly with your programming in Ableton. My light programming tends to be somewhat hacky because I’m not an LD, but I’ve seen firsthand what a proper LD can do with it and it can absolutely be 100% professional. The plugin it sounds like you’re describing for setlisting is literally called Setlist by a company called Strange Electronic (run by my buddy Henry). It’s used by the top tier of touring artists these days - great plugin.

Super dope man. Would love to know your thoughts on running your own ears from stage using an x32 or other Mixer / interface...
@eldowns
@eldowns 6 лет назад
Matthew Kerley Thanks, Matthew. In setups like these, I monitor everything the computer is generating (tracks, MIDI keyboard, SPD-SX) out of the headphone port on the Ultralite. If I want anything coming from the stage, I'll either receive it through a floor wedge or pipe it in through one of the Ultralite's inputs, then feed it out the headphone port via the DAW. Using this method, I'm essentially using the DAW as the mixer. That being said, there's no reason you couldn't feed all this back to yourself from the house to your mixer. I just tend to prefer to do it through the DAW because it's one less piece of gear to travel with and set up. Plus, the Ultralite's inputs are just sitting there doing nothing anyway, haha.

question about the output routing and monitor mixes - if you're playing backing tracks and say your vocalist wants to take the bass out and just hear say the guitar and a little drum in their monitor. is this possible if both of those elements are coming from ableton? if so how? thanks and great video!
@eldowns
@eldowns 5 лет назад
Generally speaking if you’re at this point, someone else is probably running your monitors (FOH, Mons engineer, or your own X32), in which case that element can just be removed from the monitor feed. If you’re only taking a feed from Ableton, you’d need to designate 1-2 of your outputs, set them up as a Return bus, and then send the various stems to it via the Send knobs in Ableton.

When I had the band my keyboard player ran all the sequences and tracks and we only did around 15-20 songs that way. Now my entire show is either my home made tracks or the ones I bought. They are in stereo. I saw people using Apps for MAC or I phone but nothing for my microsoft surface. It would be nice to have something that I could just touch with my finger to load songs. The way it is now I have to start songs individually and sometimes end them I my microsoft surface laptop with a Zoom H4 recorder using these 2 things together give me some flow but I feel like a dj some nights more than a musician, and its stressful hunting down the songs while playing another. PLEASE HELP SOMEONE.

@eldowns
@eldowns 3 года назад
This is a pretty old video at this point, lol. Basically, if you’re using an audio interface setup like this, you’re sending this audio to the FOH/MONs desk who will send your mixes back to your ears. If you’re trying to be super self contained, there is a world in which you could run your playback off an X32, then split your stage signals to it and the FOH desk, then run your own ears. Not many people do that yet, but it’s a sick solution.

The bare minimum required for playback is essentially just the interface; the MOTU Ultralite runs $649. However, if you want to add the extras, an SKB Studio Flyer 2U Rack Case is $249 and a TRS-to-XLR snake is roughly $40. That's essentially my current rig (yes, it's changed once again and downscaled) and it costs roughly $1,000.

Hey Eric, how do you control your in ear mix with this set up? Do you also have a mixer somewhere?
@eldowns
@eldowns 5 лет назад
MATTOMUSIC There are three ways to do this: 1) You can create an aux channel within your DAW that outputs to your headphone port, then just use the sends to create a mix, 2) You can send everything to the house and have them send you a Stereo XLR pair back, which you can plug into a wired IEM pack (mixers are so unnecessary for this), then they can just send you a mix just like they would a floor wedge, 3) You could put a rack mixer into your rig like an X32, which you can then control wirelessly - this step is more complicated, but is also pretty sweet.

Eddie C Lol, true. The good thing about this setup is that the routing can be expanded or condensed on the fly. I’ve had a bunch of shows recently where the setup time was short and we used a house engineer, so instead of splitting out all the different channels for an engineer who didn’t know the music anyway, I just summed them all down to a stereo pair so a) it was faster to get setup and b) the stems were at least balanced within themselves.

@@eldowns super Tnx. I’m currently mixing a show on Ableton for my Cymatic LP16 player and have been always told to sum to mono for live stage performances as stereo has such a limited sweet spot for the audiences in medium to large venues. However I’m gonna go with stereo and if need be let engineers some to mono 👍

Honestly this is generally true - mono can sometimes be better for live depending on the production and venue, but as you’re implying, you can always collapse to mono, but you can’t expand to stereo. Cheers.

DI rack is pointless? MOTU's outputs are balanced TRS, you just need a TRS to XLR snake..

Musicians don't pay my rent and my audience loves the tracks. It makes the show twice as good and the only musicians who complain about it are the ones who don't work or have never tried it. I used to think along those lines, but thank God was openminded enough to try it. Really anyone who looks down on using tracks to enhance a performance, doesn't know what they are talking about because almost every major act has tracks playing with them and has had them for decades. You'd be surprised at what major ROCK acts use them or used to use them. Rant over

The background music is very annoying and unprofessional, it distracts you from listening. The proof is that they don’t use it in classrooms etc. and you are Not getting too many thumb ups.
