It's somehow cute how someone thousands of years ago brought a little lamp with them and it ended up there on that table. A small but still fascinating connection to the past :)

Six minutes of Brady and Bryan talking about oil lamps and not a single genie joke? I miss Keith.

The depicted bull with Europa is actually Zeus. Zeus seduced Europa while being transformed into a bull. She fathered the king of Minos, where the legend of the Minotaur is from. Very nice mythology.

The Germano-Roman museum in Cologne has a huge collection of oil lamps and in the far corner of that section, a collection of erotic oil lamps.

The Egyptian lamp reminds me of an English pendant ocarina.

Thanks Brady! This was more illuminating than I thought it would be. Stay safe!

Alexandria was not founded in 700 BCE, it was founded in 331 BCE. There had been small settlements in the same spot probably at least since the time of Ramesses II but yeah, this lamp will certainly post-date the foundation of Alexandria.

I imagine the history of these lamps is even more interesting than that of clay pipes, another historical disposable item.

For me the Alexandrian lamp seems to depict something other than birds. More likely in my opinion is that it depeicts fish where the front relief is a cresting wave.

This all came from India where oil lamp are a part of our the Hindu Buddhist and ancient Jain philosophy... the Greeks and Romans traded with India and probably got a hang of our lamps... lamps are given to a bride during the wedding when she starts a family.. Deepavali is a festival specifically celebrated with oil lamps as the main significance and in south india we have a lunar calendar and it has a month called karthgai where the amount of lamps we burn must be doubled apart from these lamps that we burn in front of the Hindu daity space called the Pooja room ( a room beholding idols of Hindu budist Jain worship). Wicks are made of organic cotton and various oils are used for various purposes... i remember my great grandmother lighting a neem oil lamp to make the insects go away during monsoon... south india has the the most ancient model of oil lamp which offer space for 5 wicks called the kuthu Velakku which signifies the 5 elements that constute the universe fire , water wind space and earth( minerals the constute the celestial bodies)...
