ANDERSON “Bugler’s Holiday” - "The President's Own" United States Marine Band

On Oct. 23, 2019, the Marine Band performed at Royce Hall at the University of California, Los Angeles, as part of its National Concert Tour. The concert included a surprise appearance by Maestro John Williams. Leroy Anderson/transcribed by Michael Edwards/“Bugler’s Holiday”/Thomas Hooten, Jennifer Marotta, and Jeffrey Strong, guest soloists. All three soloists are former members of the Marine Band. Hooten and Strong are currently members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Morotta is an active performer in the Los Angeles area and Professor of Trumpet at USC’s Thornton School of Music.

Leroy Anderson wrote this specifically for my great uncle Bob Cusumano who was one of 2 original trumpet players. Bob also played for Tommy Dorsey & was featured on Rose Marie & Song of India, then was the bugler/trumpet player for the theme song for Death Valley Days TV show was well as numerous other pieces of music.

I was a member of the scout band at the 1969 National Order of the Arrow Convention....we had rehearsed Bugler's Holiday, but the night we were to play it, someone had stolen the sheet music. 😓

my band is playing this with a trumpet trio, it sounds so amazing. The first chair trumpet that’s doing the first trumpet for this song is so good. I’m excited for our first performance with this piece.

A thumbs up isn't enough! We absolutely loved this music including John Williams and the soloist of course! Absolutely a wonderful prelude to the 2020 4th of July! Thanks so much! The Marine Corps Band (yes each and everyone) has made living with the COVID okay! Each day we tune in and just sit back and enjoy. We are seniors and can't get out safely right now so thank you thank you for coming to us! Love you all!

I am subscribing to my own playlist here. I like this Anderson Song, "Bugler's Holiday, and also Like "The Synchopated Clock". Our nation has deep roots, including the Native American Community, etc. which is in keeping with your "President's Own" Title.

Ahh... got the answer from your reply to same question from delireus. At 'home' on the C, cuz orchestral players. Hmmm... Guess I'll get a C trumpet one of these days! I do love my B&S Challenger II silver plated Bb, though! I've been playing trumpet for about 2 years, now. Played Bb Cornet for about a year before that. Years of not playing a brass instrument after retiring from French horn (played in Houston Sym Orch in the 80's, etc.), I got to missing brass playing. What to do? Already did French horn and had an exceptional range, so... CORNET/TRUMPET!!! Gonna perform this work in May this year.

Again. BRAVO, BRAVISSIMO!!!! I want to play the lead trio part (and can), but I think the inner parts are actually more challenging. So, who knows? I might get assigned a band trumpet section part. If so,... I will play heart out on it!!!! Hey, you know... I am extremely grateful to be enjoying playing trumpet, after MANY years of professional French horn, so... If I get to play with trumpet ensembles at all, it is the greatest blessing and challenge for me (besides my lifelong pianism...)

Are those C trumpets? Interesting choice for this piece since it was scored for B-flat trumpets and it was written in B-flat. Very well done!

Yes, since all three of us are orchestral players and are at home on C, we just transposed it down a step on our C trumpets!

@@JenniferMarotta have you heard of or seen where the trio stands very close so they can and do finger eachothers horns. The holder blows and tongues but another plays the valves?. Right goes way under to finger left, left fingers center, center goes under to finger right.. did this in my high school wind ensemble because director said "its tradition" never saw it then or since, but we did it. It was freaking hard
