André Bertel Shihan (7th Dan) explains that people outside of Japan often move sideways when practicing Gohon Kumite, because they are afraid of hurting their arms while blocking a straight kick or punch. But as a defender you need to go straight back. The secret is how you block with your forearm.

I always teach my students to move their feet. The ‘block’ or parry is an insurance. Move your feet. Don’t stand in front of your opponent and wait to get hit.

So sink the qi to the dantien then punch a kick? I am guessing you need to be very careful with that last one.

Very traditional but taught correctly and correct in what he says an can be applied against a non martial artist but he said clearly that many get hurt bcuz of how they approach it an in reality yu need to condition the arm the legs the torso an face to take blows so that the pain is less

well not knowing your type of conditioning or training methods and how many real situations that you were in, cant really say what is best .. it would need to be a 1 on 1 evaluation.. but i can give you some training tips that can help .. build your neck muscles (many type of exercise one of the best is what wrestlers do) , Jaw Strengthening Exercises, and strengthening your forehead ... thats a start .. of course learning to cover your face to avoid getting hit as well as learning how to roll with the punch and some other aspects .. but in the event you do get hit your chances of getting knocked out lessens.. namaste@@matefx

They get bruises because they don't do the uke correctly. I think he means that uke is not blocking but intercepting. In Japanese uke means to receive and not to block. so if you receive the strike from your oponent corectly you will intercept it and redirect it outward without trying to entirely block it.

You cannot understand that Karate is a long term training; so this is kihon; a base; then the other. Centuries ago; martial arts was only couple of techniques repited over and over along 10 years; when that person hits you just killed you
@Zachorazor1
@Zachorazor1 Год назад
Modern Karate. You just don't get it do you? Those deep stances are meant to train your legs. Those things you are calling blocks are not blocks, the'yre movement principles for locks, throws, breaks, strikes and other techniques. For goodness sake do some Okinawan karate and see it in effective uses.

Very linear hard style art. Rigid but power.. Not modern but any art has positives and negatives. Some are theory and then some have practical (street or battlefield) applications. Respectfully 👊

Why is the Britisher speaking in some kind of pidgin English as if he is a Japanese man who only has a basic command of English?🤣🤣🤣. "Mind set...here, here..in Europe they say oh no no no thts bad" blah blah blah. It's like an episode of Cobra Kai or a Master Ken spoof. I did 10 years of traditional karate and got deep into a first-dan black belt and quit and never looked back.

He isn’t British I think he’s from New Zealand? We use to have a lot of poor instructors do this in the U.K. bak in the day. I always found it hilarious to see a native speaker impersonating the Japanese. I believe they think it makes them looking authentic because they speak like Japanese instructors with poor English!
