They gotta call that shit or the players are going to police themselves.
These announcers saying that because the referees didn't raise their arm means they originally didn't call a penalty are mistaken. It was not a delayed penalty, so the referees don't need to signal what the penalty is immediately. They often confer before making the call on the ice on plays like this, which is exactly what they did here.
LA guy clearly hit Kane high. Very nearly a head shot, call it a half head shot, and at that speed at center ice, you can send a player to the morgue with that kind of stupidity. I think it was done knowing the game was already out of hand, trying to set a tone in the series that head hunting won't be tolerated. Not good for the league for a team playing like the Kings are (they have no real shot at the cup this year) trying to injure any of the superstars on the Oilers.
