2023 - 2024 Season Ottawa Senators vs. Detroit Red Wings 12/9/2023 This is my second channel that will focus only on NHL content. My main channel is over here. / @trancexzero
For those who don’t know, Dylan Larkin suffered a bad back/neck injury a few years ago that had him in a brace and recovering for much of the offseason. Then soon after he came back from that injury early in the 2021 season, Mathieu Joseph dangerously cross checked Larkin up high near the neck into the boards. Larkin punched him and was suspended for 1 or 2 games. No penalty to Joseph. Now a few years later, Joseph hits Larkin high again injures him. To me this looks like a dangerous and unnecessary hit/punch directed to larkins neck. Seems like Joseph had the opportunity to not check Larkin in the head and neck
I’m a Sabres fan and I agree how does Joseph not get a penalty or ejected as well, same cross check to the head. We had Eric Robinson Board and injure Justin Barron a few games ago and he got ejected. Prayers for Larkin, hope he recovers quick 🙏.
O wow so some history there...I'm not gonna say it was clean but it Def looked more of a shove to me, and when one of the later angles finally shows what happened damn his neck was not in a healthy alignment whatsoever
@tyanderson6638 dumb decision by perron. Should be suspended rather easily. If not, he'll definitely get a hefty fine. If he wanted to go after someone he should've went after Joseph.
Dr. Brian Sutterer did an analysis of this. His hypothesis was a case of carotid sinus hypersensitivity. Essentially, the pressure of the contact on the neck was mistaken for actual blood pressure by the body. The response is a rapid drop of blood pressure, which can knock you out.
DR ME Says. …He’s had neck issues before.. hit to back of head stunned him , the other guy hit him on way down on chin with either fist or knob of stick.
@@Dougie1969 Totally, even most of the people cheering wouldn't have know he was seriously injured. It looked very innocuous, just a fluke with timing and where the contact happened. It's a penalty but that's all nothing malicious.
that's hockey intentionally causing injuries my opinion is it's the best playoff sport because the refs let them play it out, though i noticed they only do it in the finals now tensions are high, everyone is playing hard and they don't want penalties. so let them play it out unless it goes overboard you should have seen back in the day. they used to wait for the perfect opportunity to take out the opposing teams best player. one guy even axed another guys head with his stick and they were talking about criminal assault if not attempted murder charges
From potential cup contender, to possibly barely squeezing into the playoffs after that hit! Prayers for him & his family, Larkin is such a difference maker for them.
These are average-at-best commentators. We expect them to be able to pick up the stuff the audience doesn't immediately see-- not just tell us what we already know. Sigh
Definitely scary. I'm not sure if I have seen an athlete be flattened and motionless for that long. Great to see him skate with help to the locker room. The hit on Zub looked to be much worse and he paid the price for doing absolutely nothing
@@paulbaglio6295Larkin lands face first on the ice. The very front of his helmet impacted the ice first and slowed down his collapse, which if he had a brain injury is pretty important.
Bro I don’t even respond to people who don’t get my comments. Lol they saw the video then decided to comment. I got your first one, and ya #21 shoulda been rocked in the face for that, he knew he had a high cross check did he think it’d knock him out no but he knew where he placed it.
@Skynertia the fact that he has a neck injury is already "pretty bad" the helmet did nothing in defense of the hit itself. So yeah... it could have been worse but it's already a serious injury.
If he can’t take a glove shove to the head he shouldn’t be playing hockey. The commentators are a couple of morons inciting hostility without any evidence. Everything they said was clearly biased and completely wrong. Idiots
I hope he recovers and doesn't end up with long term issues from this. Kind of ironic that a guy gets checked to the head for real in response to a perceived check to the head when all he was trying to do was get the guy help.
I feel bad for the 1st Ottawa player to call for the trainers and he gets crossed checked in the head! Hopefully larkin will be ok…scary seeing him out for that long
@@nightcorerj6024So Larkin being held in hospital to be observed for 48 hours is now being a “troll”? Give your head a shake, Larkin has had injury issues stemming from these kinds of hits in the past.
All that pushing and shoving around Larkin when he was down not moving had me nervous as hell. There should be a sound signal that means knock everything off now to alert players who aren't aware of a potentially serious injury.
@@adamcoe Too bad the idiots are busy either trying to prove their machismo or, worse, trying to increase the number of people injured on the play to 2. This is why retaliatory hockey doesn't solve anything. If they actually cared about their teammate, they would've cleared the area and immediately beckoned a trainer (so, to be fair, tons of credit to Perron and Joseph there, though of course Joseph then loses a ton for actually performing the hit).
so the problem isn't a lack of a signal, since a very loud and recognizable one was given, and the trainers were alerted in very short order. sounds like your problem is with hockey players. also, if you watch the replays, Joseph basically just shoved him sort of hard but was clearly not intending to hurt Larkin. The hit on Zub after the fact was far more inappropriate, and the refs made the correct call. what I see is the system working perfectly. the guy that got hurt was attended to quickly, and appropriate penalties were handed out. what was your problem exactly?@@roguishpaladin
@@saschaganser9671 Seriously, does ANY Red Wings fan actually know what the definition of a crosscheck is? That is CLEARLY not a crosscheck. A punch to the face, maybe... but I'd argue it was more of a shove. A crosscheck? Not even close.
Such a weird situation. It didn’t look like a cross check. Looked more like a push with his one hand that’s off his stick. Hard to tell. I hope he’s okay.
I agree - it wasn't a cross-check. Perron's was way worse. I think the referees made the right call - it's just one of those times when a fairly innocent scrum has potentially disastrous consequences.
Yeah one hand on the stick, but both hands to the head/neck area from Joseph. Doesnt need to raise your hands that high for a push, quite hard push it seems using his weight. To me its obvious he went for the head/neck but clearly not a crosscheck as people are saying...
Not a cross check from Joseph. Clearly glove hand on the face of Larkin has no stick. Contact does not look too bad. Kelly was stick in both hands but it looks like a hit/glove to the neck of Larkin. Perrons cross check to Zub was definitely bad especially considering Zub had nothing to do with Larkin.
Number 27 clocks Larkin right in the chin as he goes down, completely inadvertently, considering he was pushed into it with momentum, it explains him getting knocked out. Hope he's okay.
Not only that. Larkin hits the ice face first as well, so the initial shock from whiplash plus probably badly bruised or broken nose and possible concussion. He was down and out cold almost instantly. What amazes me that Joseph only got 2 for roughing. He clearly crosschecked Larkin above the shoulders and caused an injury to a player, and even as I don't think it was intentional at all, it should be five minutes major in my opinion. The rulebook says that player must be in control of his stick at all times. We could say that he was indeed in control of his stick and wanted to make rough defensive play, but he as a player must know that the neck and head are off limits.
@@mitsanut5869 on first angle I seen I also thought it was a cross check. But after seeing many angles Joseph shoved him with his glove. It was high to the head which was careless. But not a cross check with the stick.
Perron reminds me of a time in college where our buddy was piss drunk and he fell over in his chair, got up all pissed off yelling “alright who punched me!?”
No one to blame here. Normal play by Joseph and Kelly. Perron comes in to stand up for his teammate, obviously targets the wrong player. Just unfortunate play.
@@kentvanhoeven3946 I see tons to blame here. A two-handed hit to the head is always unnecessary and the focus on vengeance instead of the injured player is unnecessary. The culture needs to change.
@@doncorleone3829you’re such a loser. Dismissing someone getting injured because “it’s hockey” is ridiculous. You couldn’t have a care in the world huh?
The initial hit by Joseph was a little dirty, but far from the most egregious thing I’ve ever seen. The second hit by Kelly honestly just looked like inertia. Even with that though, I’m surprised Larkin went down so hard. The hits didn’t seem all that crazy. Just goes to show how the heck and head are super vulnerable and under the right conditions it doesn’t take much.
@@DeltaV11 to me it seems that he was aiming at larkins back, but then he gets bumped from the behind by the other battle happening behind him and his arms goes up, penalty yes,but I don't think there was intention to hit larkin in the back of his head, perron in the other way...
Damn... I'm not sure what to say. Hope Larkin is okay first of all. Had to wait to see the replay, but I'm still perplexed. A push to the head? Thought it was a cross-check penalty, but wasn't. Perron's was much worse. Infinity stones? 🤔
Joseph pushed him from the back and Kelly puched him with glove from the front. If both actions weren't in same momentum - he would not be hurt. Larkin recieved it directly to the jaw - he was knocked out in boxing style
@@tonyryan9416 He got his hands up high boxing out and hit his head down and forward, directly into the fist of Kelly who was aiming chest level, and landed straight on his chin. Freak accident.
@tonyryan9416 he wasn't trying to hurt him, if you watch some of these replays you can tell he was trying to clear the net and shoved him away. He never did hit him, just a bad placement on pushing him, but I don't think that alone is what caused the injury to Larkin. I don't think Kelly intended to injure him either. Just a quick double hit.
It's interesting because it didn't look like a super bad hit. Obviously in that area anything can happen, but out of the more recent hits I've seen, I'm surprised. Glad he's ok though.
At the end of the review, this is one I think that got called right. Larkin’s a stand up player and wish him a good recovery. Joseph is just plain sloppy with his stick getting high but was also shoved off balance from behind, and Larkin just got sandwiched in an unlucky way. Perron just went after the closest Sen, standing up for his captain but being way over aggressive and getting Zub in the head was uncalled for.
I tend to agree, they were close to each other and looked more like trying to push him out of the way, but wasn't expecting Kelly to also make contact. It was the second hit that brought him down.
Crazy. The guy who did nothing except end up by Larkin while he was down got attacked and the guy who did it was the one who in the middle of everyone going at it, called for the trainer
Zub was calling too. Overall just a mess of a play. At least the players were calling for trainers despite being on opposing teams. All penalties deserved
If anyone has ever fought before...it was Kelly right hand that hits Larkin's chin - basically hitting the good night button for some people. The jaw acts as a lever to torque the head when the blow has a lateral component. If the blow is straight on, then the base of the skull is wrenched backwards. Both types of motion can crumple or twist the brainstem at the bottom of the brain or it can cause the brain to "bounce around". That was very hard to watch as you never want to see any player motionless. Wish a speedy recovery to Larkin.
You would think an NHL player would have such a glass jaw… but it’s Dylan Larkin, that guy is such a 2023 hockey player. He would have lasted 2 shifts in the early 2000s and ran home crying.
@@josephsmith2417he was out cold before he even hit the ice- his arms splayed out and he didn’t try to break his fall. He hasn’t built up the scar tissue around his brain that the 80s players had.
@@josephsmith2417 It's new age hockey, move on from this argument. Even the strongest can be concussed. I would bet he would have lasted longer because in the Juniors he would have been groomed for the NHL and if he couldn't hack it there.....he would not have played in the NHL
He was definitely already out with the Joseph hit... Sum1 tried to tell me the same thing about Kelly running into him knocked him out. He said "a doctor" said that about the replay. Probably not a doctor.. But sum1 who jst stayed at a Holiday Inn Express... I'm a Wings fan...But I must say most Wings fans are idiots.. So there's that..
Detroit fan I'm glad they got the calls right. Been a fan sence Yzermans wn. year as a player. The cross check to Zub was horrible not what we ever want to see in this town.
Larkin going down was scary, what lead to him going down didn’t seem all that egregious, more bad luck than anything else. Zub’s hit was near criminal. That cannot be acceptable.
@@jonborton1295 Looked accidental to me, the reverse angle looks like Joseph was trying to shove Larkin on the shoulder but got his glove up too high which causes Larkn's head to move downward into Kelly's arm.
@@jonborton1295 I don’t disagree that Joseph’s hit may have been purposeful, but the degree of hit matters too. When watched at full speed the Joseph hit looks more like any kind of normal jostling you’d see in front of the net. It could be a roughing because he Larkin’s head, I’m not entirely sure he targeted the head, but it’s debatable. The Perron hit was simply vicious blind retaliation that could’ve seriously injured Zub. Perron cross checked him to the head/neck from a running start. Joseph’s hit while dirty, is nothing like Perron’s.
I'd like to see an NHL where the players are less brainless and are willing to have fines greater than 5k for player safety issues but I know that's a pipe dream.
ive watched the wings since igor laronov years, larkin has this team behind him, he is a star, as a bruins fan im sending you my healing vibes to your stud. It hurt to see him on the ice like that. Stop man handling my bruins tho
Larkin is a star? Guy has never even been a point per game player in his life. He is also a punk bitch, like every Red Wings player. Larkin is above average at best. He isn’t tough at all either, I mean, look at this play. Pushed a little and acts like he just got shot by a sniper.
i feel like that was more or less a couple bad coincidents that led to larkin getting injured. joseph was most likely aiming for the shoulder to push him away and was a bit high not paying full attention. not an excuse but is what i thinkl happened looking at that. and kelly coming into help in front of the net just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Agree! Joseph accidentally punched Larkin in the back of the head an then Kelly accidentally sucker punched 71 in the face. All in good fun and totally not cowardly goon stuff.
@@solarion9802lmao, it was A push and battle in front of the net because he was swiping at their goaltender. He got knocked the F out, nice to see the senators protecting their goalie. Go after the goaltender like the wings were doing and you’re going to pay the piper. Larkin is soft
First and foremost I am not a fan of the Sens or Wings (Habs fan). But this was no case of the wrong place at the wrong time. A player doesn't just "accidentally" crosscheck somebody in the head. These are professionals, not little league children, there is no way that crosscheck by Joseph was not intentional. And it's not like Larkin was doing anything Egregious in f, front of the net, he literally just wacked at the puck like all forwards do, and as somebody who played hockey would know that defensive players(or forwards) are allowed to push people out of the way, but that's lower down on their body (near the pants) not crosschecked to the face.
I don't think many have seen it, but it was the 2nd hit that knocked him out. The 1st check to the head was blatant and uncalled for but another angle shows almost a punch to the jaw, and I think that is what knocked him out.
Joseph needs to be ejected too. This is not the first time he has cross checked larkin in the back of the neck. Remember the last time he did it and larkin was suspended for retaliating. Larkin has had a season ending neck injury prior to the 2 times joseph has practically punched him in the neck. He is trying to kill him.
That had better be 2 big suspensions for hits to the head, make a statement about head shots ffs this is getting stupid! Then Perron to add stupid to moronic cross checks Zub in the head when he was NOT the 1 that hit Larkin!
Not entirely sure if it was joseph hit that knocked Larkin out or the hand/elbow of the player his face fell on afterwards, honestly looked like a relatively mild situation compared to what happened to Larkin, unfortunate stuff
@@rorystruthers2853 Yeah, a couple sucker punching cowards on team goon. The Sens play a lot of games like this though. I guess it's what they have instead of playoffs. lol
Look, totally unrelated, hope Larkin is ok, but I have watched hockey my whole life until recently.. and I still like it, just dont have cable/want to pay for it… but seeing Patrick Kane in a RW jersey was a mind fuck… how did I miss this??
His brother plays for the Pens, could have been him, might not have. POJ (Joesph's brother) has a history with Larkin, as the two have been involved in scrums.
What a bizarre thing to happen. Head-shots happen all the time (and they shouldn't), but when something so par-for-the-course happens like that, and it ragdolls a guy... it's really freaky. Hopefully he's okay...and also hoping the league takes a better look (and delivers greater punishments) to those who go for the head. It's not a game, or a joke, to hit someone above the shoulders.
@@vTxDynastyZub was cross checking all game. Perron turned and saw him standing over him and probably just figured that that’s what he did again and that it was him that hit Larkin… it is what it is
Perron with one of the most clownish moves I have ever seen. Your buddy is out cold on the ice, a random player on the other team is calling for help and you run up and crosscheck them in the throat. Absolutely unbelievable
12 minutes of broadcast time and a ton of focus on Joseph with absolutely no credit given to him for keeping the area clear and calling the trainer over and showing concern as Larkin left the ice. I don't have a rooting interest in either of these teams. I hope Larkin is fine and I hope people recognize how classy Joseph was after the injury, which--as best I can tell--was more or less caused by heat of the moment hockey and bad luck. Because yeah: we keep seeing these situations where a player is down and there's too little concern for their safety while tempers flare. For an opposing player to recognize the situation and keep everyone away is something that I think we should commend.
Just last game two games ago I think he got boarded and in the post game interview he said that he needs to be more aware on the ice, now this happens smh
Damn, at 1st I thought Larkin looks like he’s made of glass. Initially it looks like a light tap from behind from Joseph and it didn’t even look bad. It was when they finally showed from the opposite side where you see what happened. That shove from Joseph lead Larkin’s head to move forward towards Kelly right hand which clipped Larkin’s jaw and then it was lights out! He was KO’d by Kelly’s right hand. I wouldn’t even call that a penalty. It was just an unfortunate series of events of physicality and Larkin’s head was just in a bad spot to be trapped by the hands Joseph & Kelly. In the end he took an accidental shot to the jaw and that knocked him out.
@itsstrikers9576 Don't be moronic, have some humanity for the guy who was on the ice lifeless for ffs. It's not that hard. You can disagree with the response but try not acting like a c lown
I'm pretty sure it was 27's fist to the chin that knocked him out. 21 hits him in the back of the neck/head, forcing his head right into the oncoming fist of 27. It was a combo platter, but the finisher was 27, not 21.
Perron is getting at least a 5-game suspension if he's been called to an in-person hearing by the NHL. And deservedly so. His intentional retaliation on Zub, who had nothing to do with Larkin's injury, was vicious and uncalled for.
@@34muggsy34 the hit on Larkin is not comparable. That happened as a result of incidental contact during the play. The hit on Zub was an all-out attack with a stick after the whistle, on someone who did nothing.
Made me realize how strange it must be for NHL players to wake up from being knocked out cold, only to hear the crowd erupt into cheer for them.. I mean I know it's well intended, but would be such a crazy thing to experience right after regaining consciousness
As bad as this was, the refs did however make the right call. The knockout didn’t come from Joseph. Larkin was cross checked and propelled into Kelly taking a fist/stick to the jaw area it looked like. Perron however is a different story lol
The effect on Larkin was certainly elevated by the fact that he crashed into two other players right after recieving the blow to the head/neck area, so I'm willing to say that it wasn't Josephs intention to cause that big of an impact. But he did punch him in the face with a direction and strength that was enough to whip the head around. That alone is not only a penalty, but potentially assault...
With his history with neck injuries. I cant see why they didnt put a c cauler on him. Hemust have told them it wasnt his neck or back. otherwise they for sure would have secured him on the stretcher. But, i still think they should have secured his neck.
Twenty plus years ago when I was a freshman in college I passed out due to dehydration and general weakness due to a really bad case of the flu. I fell backwards and cracked my head open. I was alone and regained consciousness quickly. I found my roommate and had him look at the wound and he thought we should call an ambulance (I had a nasty cut). When the EMTs got there they determined that since I lost consciousness (even though it was before the head injury), they should follow “standard procedure” and immobilize me and stretcher me out. As part of the work up at the hospital they did some head imaging (CT or MRI not sure which), again because it was “standard procedure.” So I found it very interesting that more than twenty years later (and with all the knowledge we’ve gained on head injuries) he was allowed to skate off on (kind of) his own power. He looked like he lost consciousness for sure there.
Joseph looks like he’s pushing to get out and get after the puck @3:55 It’s separate from the group with the goalie. I thought he was pushed but the movement of Joseph being pushed doesn’t add up. He gets bumped and then he uses others to push himself out of that and towards the puck
I have no idea what Joseph is protesting for. He's lucky to get only a game misconduct for that. That should be a multi-game suspension at bare minimum. People have to be held accountable when they're clealry deliberately hitting someone, and when that person gets knocked out. Some might argue that it's impossible to know if he was intentionally trying to injure the other player, but you have to assume the worst, otherwise many players will continue to try to get away with accidentally-on-purpose trying to injure other players. This isn't a criminal court system, and there's no need to err on the side of presuming innocence when that would only encourage players to play more recklessly, and would result in more head injuries and other serious injuries. There's also the retaliation to consider. If the suspensions from the league are strict and heavy, then there will be less of an incentive for players to retaliate against dangerous hits. Just look at what happened with the Naslund/Moore/Bertuzzi saga to see an extreme example of what I'm talking about. Things have improved since then, but they're still letting guys get off too easily a lot of the time, imo.
That’s not just a hit of the hand it’s hard to tell from this angle, but it looks like he punches his neck with one fist or both hard, then he goes forward his head drops down and hits someone else.
Looks like what knocked him out was Kelly's right hand as Joseph's driving his head and neck forward ... you can see Larkin react to the Joseph hit but goes limp after Kelly right hand connects with his face
