Not to mention he was the only president to put the national debt to $0. His last words, when asked about his greatest achievement in life, he said "I killed the bank"
@I_am_always_correct

The First National Bank held unfair amounts of power at the time; with one veto, he completely disempowered the banking system, which saved the US tens of billions over the next few decades.

He was celled this because, during the war of 1812, Jackson's group of soldigers was badly wounded and in desperate need of encouragement, and that's where Jackson came in. Through his encouraging words and fierce determination, he was given the name "old hickory" for his never-ending support and loyalty towards his men.

The reason we weren't in debt is because Jackson sold federal land acquired by from the five "civilized tribes." Of course this caused a boom in cotton production which helped northern industries until the fall in cotton prices combined with the lack of a central banking system caused the economy to collapse in 1837 the year Jackson left office.

@Lobos222
@Lobos222 8 лет назад
+Maxwell Woodhouse ... and within a year afterwards brought it back up ten folds because he created conditions that caused a huge banking crises. First by reducing the debt by selling all the federal land he could, vetoing any public works he could like highways etc, removing federal banks and once the debt was gone. Since there wasnt really a treasury to actually store anything physical in a official manner. He divided the surplus between the states which gave them allot of money and in turn drove to high rates of speculation which caused a land speculation bubble. In an attempt to lower this negative trend he required all land to be payed for in ether gold or silver, but because of the physical lack of these mineral in those quantities the whole thing cracked and a economic disaster was a fact. Your sentence insinuates Andrew Jackson was economically responsible. The truth however is FAR from it. LoL

PtolemyJones You are thinking of the deficit, which is not the same as debt. Deficit is negative and means you are adding to your debt over time while a surplus (opposite of deficit) means you are reducing your debt or increasing your wealth if you are debt free. Bill Clinton budget had a surplus so the debt was actually being reduced over time, but the US wasnt debt free or even close to it...

TopHat Sam I actually looked some FACTS up instead of listening to whatever dribble RU-vid throws at me. Apparently, he was the only president to pay off the national debt, one of his all time goals, he fought in quite a few battles as a commander, and he got rid of 'The Second Bank of the United States,' as he thought of it as a corrupt force. Whether that was true, I really have no clue. He also, due to quite a bit of sources, fought in over 100 duels or so... Sounds like he was a badass to be honest XD And he did almost die fighting Dickson, got shot really close to the heart. But, Dickson pulled a jerk move and tried to shoot him while he was down. Dickson's gun malfunctioned and Jackson shot him in the pelvic region, giving him a fatal wound. So, once again, a badass XD Although, he was against the freedom of slaves and was prejudiced against Indians... Then again, lots of people were like that back then... Okay yeah he was a jerk. XD But he was a badass one at least XD And yes, that assassination attempt actually happened like this video said it did. Except, the crazy assassin was actually a painter, not royalty. Lesson of the day, Dickson was somewhat of a jerk, but he was a badass with a bad temper who did do SOME good things.

Jackson didn't let Dickinson shoot out of kindness. He knew Dickinson would shoot fast without paying too much attention, and the rules say that if you get the first shot, you can't shoot again until your opponent has taken a shot. With Dickinson's one shot fired, Jackson had as much time as he needed to line up the perfect shot. Also, Jackson didn't just shake off Dickinson's bullet. His injury was so bad, he never recovered. And, Dickenson was shot in the stomach, not the face.

I want to say this duel is what got *GENERAL* Andrew Jackson the "right type of fame"(he was already famous from the Seminole Wars and War of 1812) to become President. Literally willing to take a bullet. Rumor that choosing to duel with Dickinson as Jackson was in fact relying upon this also quite violent feller who was a crack pistolier to be just that and hit Jackson in the heart where Jackson had placed a Bible...which is indeed how that duel played.

Yes he was a boy courier and was taken as a POW along with his brother who died due to the prison barge, BUT that's still not where he got his name. You seldom give such names to messenger boys even if a Brit officer did slash him across the face. Why not just say you were guessing. It was a fair and understandable guess, but NOT why he got that nickname name as a General. As for his battle nickname, the Creeks called him "Sharp Knife". It's well documented in all the biographies that his men gave him that name in the Spring of 1813 when his army (The Volunteers) was ordered to be disbanded in Natchez, Miss Territory after marching there in the dead of winter with few supplies and without ever engaging the enemy because US General Wilkinson didn't want him there. Instead of abandoning his men to find their way own home, as the orders implied, he organized a proper March and mortgaged The Hermitage farm to pay for the supplies and pay the men as the US government and Tenn Governor would not. On the march back he walked instead of ride his own horse so sick men could ride. The men said he was as tough as Old Hickory. Been reading Remini's biographies and older ones for 47 years. Real life printed ones, not Internet articles.

US land at the time was constantly switching owners. After years of negotiations John Quincey Adams came out with the Florida Purchase Treaty where the US bought Florida for $5 million. Then Andrew Jackson (hero of the War of 1812) was appointed military governor of the area when it was organized as a territory in 1822. Yeah we are led to believe he personally executed several of the Natives that were lagging down the trail, when the trail actually occurred during Van Buren administration. I agree with you, if he had to do it again, he would've done it a different way. But the times were different back then, and violence between settlers and the Natives were a real threat, but I guess hindsight is 20/20. I literally never knew this until a couple months ago but Jackson adopted a Native son, whose name was Lyncoya. Jackson discovered the young boy on the battlefield after his mother had been killed after an Indian conflict. Lyncoya was around the same age as Jackson's other adopted son, Andrew Jr. and he raised them as his own. Jackson even had hopes of sending Lyncoya to West Pt. with Andrew Jr., but him being a Native and the stigma around them, he wasn't allowed to. It's crazy how media never mentions important details to portray and politicize historical events. Sorry for the novel lol, but great comment btw. @@skip031890

@@southernnordic7027 I just read about the Indian child today. You're right, the media is really biased. The fact that they will easily vilify someone like Andrew Jackson(one of the greats) makes me wonder how many other people's reputations have been ruined because they disagreed with them? I can think of one right now in Donald Trump. He's not a common man like Andrew Jackson was, but he identifies with the common man. He's doing everything right and they never mention it or give him any credit. They continue to perpetuate a lie about foreign collusion the same way they perpetuate lies about Jackson. It's unfortunate, but that is the US media for you. Pure propaganda. I never learned in school that Andrew Jackson was the first(and only) President to pay off the national debt, add running water to the white house and also indoor toilets. You'd think they would teach that in government schools, but no. I don't even think they teach that he fought in the revolutionary war at only 13 years old. You're 100% right. I'm from TN (Jackson's one of 3 presidents from here) and I never recall them teaching us anything about him paying off the debt, even here in his home state. It's always the Trail of Tears, and how he hated Indians. And history was my favorite subject, so I always would pay attention in that class, unlike some other subjects lol. I never even knew about the boy Lyncoya until I watched a video by the Invisible Critic (you should check out his channel here on YT, he made a great video about Jackson in his "Forbidden History Series". You're right about Trump as well, your summary of his intentions I believe is spot on. Even the media is bitching him out for not going to war with Iran now. Seeing the MSM losing tons of viewers is proof they're too biased, and common people like us have caught on. I think this fact has a huge part on YT cracking down so hard on here over "hate speech", which is just an effort to silent dissenters and conservative voices who are doing a great job of proving the MSM's narratives wrong. It's all tied together. I also had an argument with somebody on a different video's thread about Harriet Tubman being placed on the $20 bill. They hated Jackson and listed all the normal points for him being taken off. I know Jackson hated paper money, but personally I wish they'd put Tubman on the $10. She did many more great things than that horrible banker traitor Hamilton ever did. Again I'm sorry for the long comment, but I can go on for days about things like this lol. Jackson used brought federal troops into S. Carolina to enforce federal law because many feared that they would soon after secede from the union. Jump ahead to Lincolns presidency and S. Carolina secedes. He used Jacksons actions as a precedent and sent troops into S. Carolina to stop them which lead to the civil war.

It is one of the darkest marks on american history and it rarely gets talked about. In fact, the news is completely ignoring the protests in the standing rock reservation where the millitary is using violent force against the unarmed protesters in order for an oil pipeline to pass through, which would consequently contaminate the native water supply.
@Timboslice475
@Timboslice475 7 лет назад
+Liam Hogue lol, you're obviously not paying attention to the pipeline incident yourself. First of all, that pipeline is not crossing through their territory. Secondly, the military? Really? No the military is not involved with suppressing the protests in any way, it's all police. In fact it would illegal to deploy the army on US soil given those circumstances. And lastly, the only time the police get violent with the protestors is when they have to arrest the unruly ones.

Andrew Jackson’s last words were “I killed the banks.” He said this because he restored America’s ability to print its own currency. After his death however, the private banks came back, which is why the Federal Reserve exists and also the reason our currency isny backed by gold anymore. (Which makes it literally just paper.) The Federal Reserve is no more federal than Federal Express.

There was a bit of a proxy war going on, but it caused one hell of a diplomatic incident. @@paschallehany369 How so? The natives had, while he was a child, sided with the British and raided American settlements, often with a barbarity that shocked even many of the participating tribes' leaders. Jackson himself had cleaned up many of these slaughters, and the prevailing sentiments amongst the settlers and local militias was that they WOULD, themselves, wipe out the natives. Thus, in displacing them elsewhere he probably saved them from what would've been a decidedly bloody and violent end that he had no power to stop otherwise.
