When she talked about moving her family from L.A. to Ireland, what she didn't mention was WHY: Her daughter fell in with Charles Manson's crowd. She wanted to get her out, so they moved to Angela's mother's birthplace in County Cork, Ireland [EDIT: birthplace was Belfast but had another home in County Cork]. It took a while for her daughter to break out of the spell, but then she met her future husband there. They were lucky to get out.

@@legin3753 Good question. I have seen conflicting stories about her mother's birthplace. Upon further research, I gather that her mother was born in Belfast but the family also had a home in County Cork.

That was a poor job by Cavett. IF he knew that was really horrible if not he should have done some sort of homework. Certainly you can tell that there was no pre interview and discussion of what to talk about before hand like they do today.

One of the painful reminders these shows bring into sharp relief (ironically even as one is reminiscing nostalgically about them) is how effortlessly Cavett would glide from the entertaining to the cerebral and, as often, be situated in both realms at once--Olivier, Burton, O'Toole[!] to cite but a few examples in addition to this interview with Angela--in leaving his viewers with a pleasureable experience like no other. By comparison today--to be specific, the painful reminder--we have unalloyed mediocrity for what passes as "entertainment"; it's far worse than kitsch and there seems to be no way of escaping it. I have always felt a residue of anger towards ABC for cancelling his show. Carson never approached the heights that Cavett routinely achieved night after night. Not sure if he is still interviewing anymore, but I hope so. Haven't seen anything lately. I would love to attend at least one live (or pre-recorded) show. That would be wonderful! Cosmic, truly. Of no real consequence to my first observation, a serendipitous discovery learned from watching the programs again (that so intrigued me decades ago) was that his wardrobe was not quite as vast as I thought. I loved those suits and ties and occasionally the paired blazers and trousers he wore. When he wore a cravat (ascot?) without jacket the night his Woodstock show aired he was the epitome of cool! He may have been short statured--apropos his nonplussed reply to Angela " ...afraid of this little fella from the plains?"--but he looked so damned elegant in them! One could not help but admire his keen intelligence, his handsome good looks and the superb physique under that fashion sense. (If you're wondering about my reference to Cavett's build, there were interviews with Muhammad Ali; in one of them he goes into the ring for lessons in boxing from the Greatest who, immediately after checking out Cavett head to toe gushed on and on about his robust build.) After re-watching so many interviews I realize now the wardrobe was not as large as I remembered. This particular interview with Angela caught me off guard because I don't recall seeing the silver-gray number before. As I said, a comment of no consequence.

Dick Cavett was correct, the film is called 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' which tells of the story of the 'portrait' of Dorian Gray.

I'm normally a Cavett fan but he pushed the moving to Ireland too much because he wanted her to say why. He knew the reason and the Manson connection. She clearly didn't want to say.

I must. Say that. That Angela Lansbury sounds like a very responsible woman. As well as a very responsible mother. She reminds me of my mother. When I was faced with a very difficult situation. At the residency that I used to live at. I happen to hear from a little birdie let’s say.. That there was a drug bust at the location that I used to reside at. When I heard this I wanted to get out of that situation I didn’t wanna be involved in it. I knew about it before my mother dead. But my mother happened to hear about the situation and she wanted to get me out of it.

This was not a good interview, on his part. He knew enough to as her is he was treading into some territory he ought not. If he knew that much, why bring it up to begin with. He's often a little too smug. she of course, although reticent and not relaxed, was lovely.

I believe you are a bit harsh on Dick. He was interviewing an actress at the time who was very uneasy. Dick wanted to make her feel comfortable rather than make a name or penny from this interview. Also angela made a slight comment of her absence from his show for 4 years.

I fully agree, he was being quite disingenuous. And yes always smug and not half as clever as he always seemed to think he was, as demonstrated by his many failed attempts at "wit" across all his celebrity interviews, where he cracks a cringeworthy joke and then doesn't know when to quit. Very overrated and awkward interviewer, on par with our own British version, the insufferably idiotic Michael Parkinson.

Awkward interview. Almost Mae West territory. He got off.on the wrong foot with the first film question. All he should have done was simply ask, what was your first American film? Gaslight then he could have asked her about Bergman and Boyer. Then he pushed her about moving to Ireland. I know he has to film time but you have Lansbury there. There's tons to ask!
